Fled Without Realizing I Had Prevented the Apocalypse

Chapter 5 - The World Doesn't End (5)

I’m screwed.
The moment the young lady of the Araxis family uttered my name, I felt a momentary chill.
I don’t know how she recognized my name.
I checked to see if the perception interference device on my face had been deactivated, but the device was still intact.
She probably recognized me by my voice…

‘Did I have any connection with the Araxis Count family?’
After pondering my past for a while, I shook my head.
I hadn’t even met the Count before, so how could I have encountered his daughter?
But the fact that she recognized me without even seeing my face probably means that the young lady had a one-sided connection with me.
And in cases like this, it has never been linked to a good situation.
“The fortunate thing is that no one else heard my name…”
Although she shouted my name inside the cave, her voice wasn’t very loud, probably because she had exhausted most of her strength in the fight with the demon contractor, and fortunately, the Count and Countess didn’t seem to have heard my name.
Additionally, I confirmed that she had only just gotten up after collapsing from exhaustion that day and not waking up until recently.
I eavesdropped on all the conversations the young lady had after waking up by enhancing my hearing, but fortunately, there was no mention of me.
There are two options I can choose here.
‘The best case is that it’s just a misunderstanding.’
The state I saw the young lady in looked too bad to describe in polite terms.

She was on the verge of losing consciousness at any moment.
So in that situation, a name she had unconsciously kept in her memory might have slipped out.
I can understand that completely.
But.

If.
Just if.
If it wasn’t a misunderstanding and she really did recognize me.
Then I have no choice but to take the ultimate measure.
“Silencing.”

Usually, when people think of silencing, they first think of murder, but I’m not that cruel.
I’ll just make her take a simple oath not to reveal my name.
Although there are consequences for breaking the oath, it doesn’t matter as long as she doesn’t break it in the first place.
Thinking this, I looked at the room where the Araxis young lady was sleeping through the window.
Despite the late hour, the light in the young lady’s room remained on.
This was because the Count Araxis and his wife were having a worried conversation while tightly holding their daughter’s hand.
I knew the Countess would be like that, but I didn’t expect the Count himself to have such an affectionate expression. It seems the rumors circulating in social circles about him being a doting father were true.
“Don’t ever do such a thing again.”
“Yes, it was too reckless. Confronting a demon contractor without mana…”
“I understand. But we managed to escape safely, so…”
The sight of the three family members embracing each other in a touching reunion was quite pleasant to see, but the longer the embrace lasted, the longer I had to wait outside, so I inwardly prayed for the embrace to end quickly.
“Now both of you should go to sleep. You’ve been through a lot. It’s late.”
“That’s right. You’ve just regained consciousness, so your head must be in a mess. Get some good rest.”
“Yes, if you need anything, make sure to tell your father.”
Fortunately, their touching reunion didn’t last long, and with the final image of the Countess slapping the Count’s back, saying his words were exaggerated, both of them left the room.
After they left, the light in the young lady’s room naturally went out.
The moment I could no longer hear the footsteps of the Count and Countess, I carefully entered the room, wrapping my body in magic power so that the young lady wouldn’t sense my presence.
Because the room was so clean, I carefully entered without anything catching my feet and looked at the young lady lying on the bed.
After the Count and his wife left, the young lady, who had turned off the lights and lain down, was staring intently at a single chair placed in the center.
The young lady’s gaze was fixed as if waiting for someone.
And her muttered words:
“It should be time for you to come.”
Hearing those words, I realized that my first and best assumption was wrong.
Then, as she wished, I stood in front of the chair and removed the magic power concealing my body.
“You’ve come.”
“You knew I would come?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
I asked out of genuine curiosity.
“Since you’re a wanted person, I judged that you wouldn’t leave someone who discovered your identity alone.”

The young lady said with a bright smile.
“Huh.”
At her answer, I let out a laugh of disbelief.
“As you said, I’m a wanted person being chased by the Empire. And you discovered my identity. Saying I wouldn’t leave you alone could mean I might kill you to silence you, you know?”
“You see, even though I look like this, I’m the only daughter of the Count family. If you kill me, I expect the repercussions would be quite large. To the extent that killing me would be more disadvantageous than keeping me alive and silencing me.”
Although I don’t usually like repeating the same action, I let out another laugh of disbelief.
I couldn’t help it.
I should have realized it when the Count’s daughter wielded a sword and caught the demon contractor.
The sight of her calmly weighing the pros and cons of her life against a wanted criminal with a bounty of several hundred million, without fear, doesn’t seem at all like a woman of her age.
Moreover,
“If I die at the hands of the Empire’s First Star, that would be an honorable death in its own way.”
At her subsequent words, I looked down at her for a while with an expression of disbelief, then slumped down into the chair.
“I’m speechless.”
“So you’re not going to kill me?”
“Right, as you said, killing you would be more disadvantageous than keeping you alive.”
And it’s not really my style to use such methods anyway.
Hearing my muttering, the young lady took something out from behind her pillow and said,
“Then I guess this won’t be necessary.”
A paper written in the common language of the continent: “The culprit who killed me is the Empire’s First Star, Kyle Amillan. He is wearing an unknown device on his face.”
The young lady tore up the paper in front of my eyes with an expression of relief.
I watched this for a moment before blurting out the thought that came to my mind.
“You’re crazy.”
“That’s what I often hear.”
I’m really at a loss for words.
What kind of woman would affirm being called crazy?
There are quite a few among those I know, but since they can’t be considered normal women, let’s skip them…
…Can this one be considered a normal woman either?
I don’t know.
I shook my head to clear away the complicated thoughts and opened my mouth.
“Did you also predict how I would silence you?”
“Yes, I believe you will use a geas… Am I correct?”
“…Yes.”
Geas.
An oath imbued with magic power.
Everyone in this world has magic power that has seeped into their body, and this oath is made by pledging that magic power.
It’s literally swearing on one’s magic power, so if an ordinary person with little magic power in their body were to make such an oath, they probably wouldn’t be able to move easily for about three months, and for a superhuman with immeasurable magic power, it could even cost them their life.
In short, it’s an oath where the price for breaking the contract becomes more severe the higher one’s level.
However, unlike other oaths forbidden by the Empire, it doesn’t appear on the surface, and the consequences of breaking the oath are clearly visible.
That’s why it’s the most commonly used method when nobles make deals with each other.
“I’ve heard that in the case of a geas, unlike other oaths, it’s established only when there’s something given to each other…”
“Yes, the scales must be balanced.”
This is one of the tiresome aspects of a geas.

The necessity to balance the scales.
This is why other oaths are usually used if possible, but unlike a geas, other oaths are inevitably detected externally.
If detected like that, they could trace the owner of the oath, and in the end, it would be discovered that I was involved with the oath.

Then there would be no point in making the oath.
Inwardly sighing, I asked the Araxis young lady what she wanted in return for the oath.
“Please have a one-on-one fight with me.”
“Are you really crazy?”
I encountered vocabulary so miserable that I could hardly believe it came from the young lady.

“So…”
Latua, a new knight of the Kantuma Knight Order belonging to the Imperial Family, maintained a posture without a single flaw.
“Someone dealt with the Contaminant?”
“Yes!”
“And in the process, a blue moon was seen?”
“Yes, that’s correct!”
It was because he didn’t know what his superior would say if he found any fault with the person in front of him.
The Empire’s Second Star.
The Knight Commander who commands all the knight orders of the Imperial Family.
Now that the First Star has disappeared, she’s called the Empire’s finest sword.
The protagonist of single-handedly subjugating a Grade 4 Contaminant.
Scarlet Frausia.
After hearing Latua’s answer, she silently traced the floor with her finger.
What they thought was a Grade 10 Contaminant turned out to be Grade 9.
The mental contamination against the knight order could have caused great damage to the Empire if things had gone wrong.
Fortunately, it was prevented by some superhuman, but it didn’t make sense for her to miss such an opportunity.
Scarlet, who flew to the scene in an instant without even an order from the Emperor as soon as the incident occurred,
Smelled a familiar magical energy from the slash that cut down the Contaminant and raised the corner of her mouth.
“Ah, is it you, Kyle?”
