Chapter 1: Chapter 1
Rowan had always been a creature of habit, though his habits were anything but ordinary. With deadlines tightening around him, his apartment was littered with coffee cups, sketchbooks, and pages of half-finished manhwa. As an up-and-coming webtoon artist, Rowan thrived on inspiration, but recently it felt as though the spark he once had was flickering out. His latest series was a bore to him, and his editor's cold feedback was beginning to sink his confidence. "Where's the heart?" they'd asked. "You need to dig deeper."
He needed something new. Something real.
That's when it happened: An ad flashed across his phone screen, glowing brightly even in the dim light of his apartment. The banner read: "Experience the universe's most gripping love story."
Curious, Rowan clicked on it without much thought. The stunning visuals on the screen showed breathtaking planets, sprawling oceans, and starry skies. He didn't need much convincing. He downloaded the game.
As he explored the world of Love and Deepspace, Rowan felt an unexpected pull. The characters were rich with emotion, the world beautifully crafted. But it was Rafayel an artist and half-merfolk who captivated him. Something in his deep, dark eyes, and the tragedy of his story resonated with Rowan. He lost track of time, playing for hours, ignoring the creeping exhaustion. Ideas flowed for his own work: the characters, the worlds, the emotions. It was everything Rowan had been seeking.
But then, as he was about to call it a night, the game froze no, it shuddered. The screen flickered, pixelated for a brief moment.
"What the hell?" Rowan muttered, staring at his phone as it began vibrating violently in his hand. A strange hum echoed from the device, as if the very air around him was warping.
Before he could react, his apartment lights flickered and dimmed, followed by a sudden, overwhelming pressure in the air. It felt as though the world itself was holding its breath. Rowan's heart raced. The phone felt hot, burning his palm, and then darkness enveloped him.
It wasn't a power surge, a glitch, or some malfunction. He could feel his body being pulled, not physically, but from some unseen force. The floor beneath him vanished, the walls of his apartment dissolved into pure, shifting light. His vision spun, a suffocating pressure weighing down on his chest as his entire body was torn from his world.
With a sharp gasp, Rowan's surroundings snapped back into focus. He stumbled, his breath catching as he found himself standing on soft, cool sand. Waves crashed in the distance, the sound almost surreal in its clarity. The air was heavy with salt and the cold bite of the ocean breeze. His skin prickled with an unfamiliar chill.
What the hell is going on?
Rowan took a step forward, his mind racing, trying to comprehend the impossible. He looked around, his pulse quickening. There were no familiar buildings, no city skyline. Instead, a vast ocean stretched endlessly before him, under a sky dotted with twin moons. The scene was breathtaking, surreal.
But before he could process it further, a voice cut through the silence, sharp and laden with confusion.
"Who are you?"
Rowan spun around, his breath caught in his throat. Standing at the edge of the water was a figure tall, with dark blue hair that billowed around his face as if caught by the wind, though there was none. His sharp eyes were wide with disbelief, studying Rowan like an enigma.
Rafayel.
The character from the game. Standing before him, real and alive.
Rowan could barely breathe, his mind struggling to catch up with reality. He opened his mouth, but no words came out.
And just like that, the ocean's breeze seemed to freeze in place, time itself stalling as the two of them stood strangers in an impossible world.
