Chapter 185: Tasks and Authority of the Elders

Rosie asked, "Upgrade? What exactly are you dissatisfied with?"

She used the term 'you' with great respect, fully aware that the young man before her was no longer just her junior from school.

As the operator of the Mercenary Guild app's backend, Rosie knew everything that went on in the Guild.

Over the past six months, Alexander had changed the fates of countless individuals, treating people as mere chess pieces—and she was no exception.

Alexander replied, "There are many places in this world without signal towers, making it impossible to track hunters or allow them access to the app.

I need you to upgrade the Mercenary Guild app so that every hunter can use it anywhere, without limitations."

Rosie was silent for a moment before responding, "Currently, the Mercenary Guild has 3,582 hunters, and there will only be more in the future.

To achieve the upgrade you're asking for, I would need at least a year to implement the changes.

The upgrade requires a corresponding firewall; otherwise, it would be easily compromised."

Alexander said, "A network department needs to be established. You will choose your subordinates and send the list to Yamato, the head of human resources.

He will ensure the people you need are brought to you.

Not all tasks require your personal involvement."

While Rosie was highly skilled in her field, she was not a natural leader.

Having Yamato oversee recruitment and exert some control would make it easier for Rosie to manage her subordinates.

Alexander pressed his temples and continued, "You also need to prepare a dedicated support team for hunters.

Their task will be to serve senior hunters and demon-ranked hunters, ensuring they can access the information they need within their authority at any time."

This information would cover various categories, including mission targets, maps, and details about towns and cities.

After finishing, Alexander turned to Yvette.

Yvette immediately sat up straighter, sensing it was her turn.

Her management authority had only been granted shortly before Alexander's trip to White Mountain City.

Now, both Rosie and Jack had gained management authority, and in some cases, their authority even surpassed hers.

Yvette believed that Alexander wouldn't favor them without rewarding her as well.

After all, she had consistently worked hard to be by Alexander's side, and she had succeeded.

In terms of daily life and logistics, she was the one taking care of Alexander.

Yvette saw herself as a maid who Alexander hadn't yet dismissed.

Sure enough, Alexander's next words made Yvette so excited that her legs trembled.

"Yvette, from this day forward, you are the president of the Mercenary Guild's South Sea branch."

The statement was short, but its significance was clear to everyone.

It meant she was second only to Alexander himself, with authority over thousands.

South Sea was one of the most prosperous cities in the country, and its branch president was leagues above those of other cities.

Jack and Rosie knew what this truly meant—South Sea was the birthplace of the Mercenary Guild.

Almost every hunter had started their journey from South Sea, and now they would all be under Yvette's jurisdiction.

Alexander was entrusting her with control over the entire Guild's operations!

"Sir, I won't let you down!" Yvette's chest rose and fell as she tried to suppress her excitement.

"You shouldn't celebrate too early. If you or your subordinates make any mistakes, the human resources department will administer appropriate punishments."

As Alexander finished speaking, a young man entered the room slowly.

He wore a white suit with a fresh rose pinned to the pocket and a strange smiling mask on his face.

It was Yamato, also known as Hungry Ghost.

Alexander took a sip of his coffee and said, "Hungry Ghost, the human resources director of the Mercenary Guild, responsible for recruiting specific hunters."

Then, looking around at the others, he added meaningfully, "And overseeing personnel changes."

Yamato knelt on one knee, bowing his head in deference to Alexander.

If anyone saw Yamato's face behind the mask, they would notice the fanatical reverence in his eyes.

Hearing this, Rosie, Jack, and Yvette all froze.

If personnel changes fell under Yamato's authority, he was effectively a special commissioner.

What did personnel changes mean?

Dismissals, demotions, promotions?

Being dismissed from the Mercenary Guild was equivalent to death—or perhaps it was death itself.

And promotions or demotions?

A senior hunter demoted to a lower rank, or a mid-level hunter promoted to senior?

This was an immense power—oversight of the Guild and a sword hanging over every hunter's head!

When Rosie had arrived, she wasn't wearing a mask, and Yamato had clearly seen her face.

Rosie's eyes betrayed a hint of alarm. Did this mean even she would be subject to Yamato's supervision?

While everyone present had the same rank and authority, exceeding even that of branch presidents, Yamato's authority during 'personnel' tasks surpassed them all.

It became evident to everyone in the room—Alexander no longer fully trusted them, or at least not as much as before.

What exactly had happened in White Mountain City?

Alexander noticed the changes in everyone's expressions but chose to remain silent.

Rubbing his dizzy head, he turned to Yamato and said, "You need to expedite the recruitment of Soulhunters. You have one week."

Yamato lowered his head respectfully and replied, "Rest assured, within a week, the recruitment and even the training and selection of Soulhunters will be completed."

As he spoke, Yamato revealed a chilling smile. "This batch of Soulhunters is different from the last—they're exceptional."

Alexander didn't ask further questions. He trusted Yamato to handle the task.

The key figures in the Mercenary Guild were set up to counterbalance each other, with Yamato overseeing them. This was the true purpose of the Elder Council—to better manage the Guild and maintain control over its senior members.

Alexander turned to Rosie. "How's the information I asked you to investigate?"

Rosie quickly pulled a sheet of paper from her bag, listing over a hundred names.

"This is the list of hunters who left South Sea three months ago with significant amounts of extraordinary plants," Rosie said.

Alexander took the list. Each name made his head spin slightly again, but one name stood out in his mind.

The Useless One, Robert King.

He was merely a 'zombie' hunter who had consumed the Vine of Ascension, yet he possessed an unusually high number of points—something suspicious.

Alexander began to analyze the situation.

It seemed as though several capable hunters had transferred all their points to this one individual.

Rubbing his temples, Alexander said, "Investigate The Useless One, Robert King."

Alexander was almost certain that the hunters from White Mountain City were closely tied to Robert King.

Rosie nodded and asked, "Should we freeze his points?"

Alexander shook his head.

"No, just follow my instructions."

As long as the points remained active, Robert King would try to convert them into extraordinary plants.

Once he made a move, it would provide the opportunity to trace and root out this group of sewer rats.

Alexander stood up, swaying slightly from dizziness.

Yvette immediately became concerned and moved to support him. "Sir, would you like to go upstairs to rest?"

Alexander's face was pale as he addressed Yvette.

"A few days ago in White Mountain City, I encountered some hunters who intended to leave the Guild with extraordinary plants.

This matter is now in your hands."

His words left everyone visibly shocked, especially Yamato, whose eyes widened.

Punishing hunters was his responsibility, and now it seemed there was a serious situation to handle.

Alexander gestured for Jack. "Take me to North Sea City."
