Chapter 14: The Prince of Drakthar Dominion
"Why?" Shen Xinghui asked, puzzled.
"Our anatomy," Ignatius said with a wry smile. "It's... larger than most other races, and it causes considerable pain for our partners. Humans, in particular, have smaller bodies, and trying to bear our children can result in severe injuries, even bleeding."
Ignatius's expression turned solemn as he added, "We wish for humans to bear our children, given their numbers, but we can't bear to inflict pain on them in the process."
Shen Xinghui:...
He couldn't help but recall the striking image of that incredible size.
That monstrous flower he had encountered was enormous—thick as an arm.
Ignatius's big physique certainly suggested a similar scale, but imagining it, especially across species, was beyond him.
Even though they had bathed together at the hot springs, he hadn't paid attention to such details.
Shen Xinghui had been too preoccupied with the toxins and the wonders of this strange world.
Ignatius continued, "There's another issue, though this one's on our side. The scent matters a lot to us. No matter how attractive or appealing someone might be, if their scent doesn't match with us, nothing happens. We can't even get aroused."
"That... yeah, I can see why your numbers are dropping."
Shen Xinghui shook his head.
A species already struggling with low birth rates, compounded by physical challenges and such selective preferences—it sounded like they were hurtling toward extinction.
"Well, we're not alone in this problem," Ignatius said with a wry smile. "Other races face similar issues. The Sky Man, Demons, and Elves also have low birth rates and struggle in their own ways."
"That many? Is this world even okay?" Shen Xinghui asked, his concern growing.
The idea of so many humanoid races being endangered was unexpectedly heartrending.
"To be fair, those races have long lifespans. Dragon Man, for instance, live around 800 years on average. The Sky Man live about the same, and Demons and Elves can live for over a thousand."
"Wait, what?! That long?" Shen Xinghui exclaimed.
Compared to humans, whose health often declined by their sixties, the difference was staggering.
Humans felt almost absurdly short-lived in comparison.
"I'm over 200 years old myself," Ignatius added casually, "still just reaching adulthood for my kind."
"I'm 22," Shen Xinghui replied.
Ignatius nodded, "I figured as much. Physically and in appearance, we're roughly the same age."
What a vast difference between two beings considered "peers," Shen Xinghui mused.
"With a lifespan that long, most of us are content if we manage to have even one child during our lifetime. Many never do. But in my case, things are different—I must have a child, no matter what."
"That sounds like a lot of pressure. Why is that?"
"I'm part of the royal family of the Dragon Man nation, Drakthar Dominion. Specifically, I'm a prince of the Black Dragon lineage. Unfortunately, I have no siblings. If something happens to me, the royal lineage of the Black Dragons will end."
"Wait... what?!"
So, they were on the brink of extinction, and he was a prince?
