Chapter 99: Chapter 101: Cú Chulainn: Please, Let Me Be the Protagonist
On the evening of March 4th, Shinji returned to the Matou residence with Arturia.
While removing her high heels, Arturia tilted her head and asked, "Master, why did you suddenly come to pick me up today?"
Arturia had been filming the second season of "Taste of Fuyuki City," and Shinji's unexpected appearance at the set to pick her up and take her to a luxurious sushi dinner left her surprised. She knew that because of her appetite, Shinji rarely invited her out for meals.
"Just had some free time, so I decided to pick you up," Shinji said with a smile, hanging up his coat. "Didn't you enjoy it?"
"Master, I'm very grateful for the meal," Arturia said as she walked down the corridor, curious about the absence of others' voices. "Where is everyone else?"
"They went to the company to watch TV," Shinji shrugged. "Of course, watching UBW together is an excuse; they just wanted to have some fun."
"Did everyone go? Even Sakura?" Arturia asked, tilting her head.
Shinji shook his head, "Not Sakura. She and Medusa went shopping and probably won't be back until late."
"Sakura isn't watching the premiere? I thought she was the most concerned about your work," Arturia said, puzzled.
Shinji's expression turned a bit odd as he lightly touched his stomach, recalling something. "Sakura said... her and Rider's screen time in the whole series doesn't add up to 20 minutes. She thought it was pointless and decided to wait for HF to go online instead."
Arturia, noticing Shinji's reaction, smiled understandingly and placed her hand on his shoulder. "Master, you should learn how to strengthen your stomach."
"Absolutely unnecessary!" Shinji brushed off Arturia's hand, "Go take a bath and be ready to watch the show later."
"Got it," Arturia said, squinting her eyes. "Master, you can look forward to seeing me shine on screen."
Watching Arturia happily walk away, Shinji slowly raised a question mark. "Does she not remember she barely has any scenes in the first episode?"
Half an hour later, Shinji, freshly bathed and changed, entered the Matou residence's AV room.
Sitting on the couch, he tuned the large screen to TBS, waiting for UBW to start.
This luxurious AV room was specially renovated by Zouken Matou after Shinji became a director, intending to use top-notch home theater equipment to enjoy his grandson's works. Unfortunately, Zouken overlooked his own frail body and high blood pressure, which couldn't withstand the sound system's thunderous output. After one use, Zouken never entered the room again, leaving Shinji to enjoy the equipment every time.
"Master, is green tea and senbei okay?" Arturia entered the AV room carrying a tray. Having just bathed, she wore a loose-fitting casual outfit, her face slightly flushed, and a pleasant fragrance wafting from her.
"Mm, not bad," Shinji said with his eyes closed, nodding in satisfaction, whether referring to the snacks or Arturia herself unclear.
Arturia noticed Shinji's demeanor, gently placing the tray on the coffee table before sitting at the far end of the couch from Shinji.
Seeing his Servant's attitude, Shinji sighed, "Arturia, you really hurt my feelings."
Arturia responded coolly, "Master, you could try being more proactive. I guarantee that I will ensure your lower body will never think for the rest of your life."
"That's quite harsh."
Shinji sipped his green tea.
"I'm merely expressing my stance," Arturia said seriously. "I despise frivolous men."
"Then I should gain weight."
Unfortunately, Shinji's joke didn't amuse Arturia, and the atmosphere between them turned awkward.
Luckily, UBW began airing, and both Shinji and Arturia focused their attention on the TV.
Unlike the movie version of FSN, the TV series didn't jump straight into the battle between Archer and Lancer. Instead, it began with the events leading up to the Holy Grail War. Shinji didn't directly copy the anime version's plot either; he merged the prologue and the first episode to provide dual perspectives from Rin and Shirou, showcasing their everyday lives before the war started. To balance Rin and Shirou's screen time, Shinji compressed the scenes between Rin and Archer, keeping only their usual bickering.
"Hmph, that Archer, his sharp tongue is impressive. Is this what you mean by being pretentious, Master?" Arturia commented with a hint of pride, hearing Archer's banter with Rin on the screen.
Shinji, resting his chin on his hand, teased, "Not really. It's more about deflecting attention to avoid awkwardness. In other words, this shadowy guy is covering up his dark past."
"I see, I learned something new."
Arturia nodded in understanding, mentally noting down the tactic. If she had paper and pen, she would have written it down.
"Next time Sir Lancelot mentions my embarrassing history in front of others, I'll use this trick on him. Also..."
Arturia glanced at the breakfast Shirou was enjoying on screen and swallowed her saliva.
"Master, I'm hungry. Can you prepare some supper?"
"Aren't there senbei?"
"I already ate them all."
Looking at the now-empty plate, Shinji rubbed his temples.
"Can't your stomach ever be full?"
"Achoo!"
Meanwhile, Lancelot, who was chatting with Kariya at Type-Moon Inc., sneezed loudly.
"How strange, can even heroic spirits catch colds?"
"Of course not. Someone must be talking about me," Lancelot complained, rubbing his nose.
After spending so much time in the real world, Lancelot had come to understand some of the modern society's mysterious beliefs. For instance, if you sneeze out of nowhere, that means there is someone out there talking about you.
"The TV series' pace is slower than I expected," Gilgamesh grumbled while drinking. "At this rate, when will I make my appearance?"
It had been a full 20 minutes, and the plot had only progressed to Rin discovering the barrier at school and preparing to investigate.
"Probably in the latter half of the season," Enkidu replied, flipping through the script. "No need to rush, Gil. You'll have plenty of action later."
"Rush? I'm just concerned that if I don't appear soon, the show's ratings will drop," Gilgamesh insisted, trying to save face.
Enkidu poked Gil's cheek with his finger playfully. "Come on, you're obviously anxious."
"Enkidu, don't think that just because you're my friend, I won't dare to hit you! I'm warning you—"
BANG!
Two large beer mugs, each holding at least a liter, were slammed down in front of them by Iskandar.
"I say, you two, why not take this rare opportunity to drink more?"
Iskandar grinned broadly.
"Hmph."
Gilgamesh ignored the beer and raised his own glass of fine wine.
"Don't expect me to trade my fine wine for this inferior stuff."
An invitation between kings would never be refused by Gilgamesh, but this was a casual gathering of heroic spirits, so he wasn't obligated to accept.
"Tch, trying to trick you out of your wine isn't easy."
Realizing his plan was seen through, Iskandar scratched his head and sat back down on the couch.
"Thanks, Conqueror King."
Enkidu gladly took one of the beers and drank it all in one go. When he put the mug down, he looked completely unfazed, as if he had just drunk a glass of water.
"Didn't expect someone who looks so delicate to drink like a champ," Iskandar remarked, surprised.
Enkidu smiled, "This appearance feels the most natural to me. But if necessary, I can transform into a giant more burly than you."
"Sounds like that Assassin over there," Iskandar said, glancing at Yan Qing in the distance.
"Not quite. Yan Qing can only transform into humans, while I can shape-shift into various non-human forms as well," Enkidu explained confidently, proud of his superior abilities.
"This power, I feel like Master would... develop it further."
"What?"
Enkidu didn't catch what Iskandar said because the TV suddenly blared with sound. Rin had encountered Lancer during her investigation of the barrier, leading to an intense battle between Archer and Lancer at the school.
The following plot closely followed the movie version: Shirou, as a witness, was killed by Lancer and then revived by Rin's magic. However, Lancer wasn't about to let Shirou off the hook and pursued him to the Emiya residence. Desperate, Shirou accidentally summoned Saber, becoming the final Master.
"Tch, it ends just like that, huh?"
Watching himself retreat from the Emiya residence under Saber's threat, Cú Chulainn clicked his tongue in disappointment. Unlike the others, who were relieved that his screen time had ended, Cú Chulainn wished his fight scenes could last another half hour. He knew well that after the prologue, his scenes were limited to his brief alliance with the main characters. In other words, he was a woeful supporting character with shrinking screen time.
For Cú Chulainn, could anything be more tragic? Absolutely. Despite his limited scenes, UBW still gave him the most screen time out of the three FSN versions.
'Master, when will you let me be the protagonist for once?'
Today was yet another day where Cú Chulainn didn't become the main character.
