Chapter 125: The Third Hokage
Setsuna laughed, feeling elated. He could finally act on his own. There was one final step to complete.
Konoha needed to betray the Uzumaki clan, which would give him the reason he needed to attack the village.
He then traveled using Kamui to the ruins of the battlefield, where the bodies of fallen shinobi were scattered across the land. His goal was to claim his spoils of war—the treasured tools of the Six Paths.
Fortunately, the rebels had taken the weapons after they killed the Raikage. The tools were the Bashōsen (芭蕉扇, meaning "Banana Palm Fan"), Benihisago (紅葫蘆, meaning "Crimson Gourd"), Kohaku no Jōhei (琥珀の浄瓶, meaning "Amber Purifying Pot"), Kōkinjō (幌金縄, meaning "Golden Canopy Rope"), and Shichiseiken (七星剣, meaning "Seven Star Sword").

"Where am I?" muttered Tobirama as he woke up. "Is this the afterlife?"
"Hello?" Tobirama shouted.
Suddenly, another figure materialized in front of him.
"Mikoto?" He reached out to hug her unconciously, but his body passed through hers. He couldn't hold her in his arms.
Mikoto's eyes slowly opened.
"Sensei, is this the afterlife?"
"Maybe? I... died, Mikoto," replied Tobirama.
"Yes, we died. But at least I died with you, Sensei," Mikoto smiled.
"Mikoto..." Once again, he tried to hug her, but his body passed through hers.
"Sensei..." Mikoto also attempted to hold him, but it was the same. "Is this the state of being dead?"
"Yeah, it seems like we can't touch each other," Tobirama replied.
"It's a pity," Mikoto said, biting her lower lip.
"Mikoto, about your feelings... Can I be honest with you?" asked Tobirama.
Mikoto nodded.
"To be honest, I'm a middle-aged man, and it was hard for me to accept your love," Tobirama admitted. "But I'm happy. No one has ever confessed their love to me in my life."
"Sensei..." said Mikoto softly.
"But when you said you loved me and were willing to die with me, I felt something—both pain and happiness in my heart. At that moment, I realized that I, too, wanted a family with you," Tobirama confessed.
Just as they were having their heartfelt moment, they were suddenly pulled from that dimension and found themselves in the Hokage's office.
"What is this?" Tobirama asked, looking around.
"Sensei, where are we?" asked Mikoto.
"Tobirama, you... died?" The voice of Hashirama echoed in the room.
"Brother, you're here?" Tobirama's eyes widened in disbelief.
"Yeah, I've always been here, watching what happened after I died," said Hashirama.
"So, have you seen the war?" Tobirama asked.
"Yes, I'm sorry, Tobirama," Hashirama replied. "I should have followed Setsuna's suggestion and embraced democracy."
"Hmm... is this your student, Mikoto?" Hashirama tried to shift the conversation.
"Yes, she died with me," replied Tobirama.
"Greetings, Shodai Hokage," said Mikoto respectfully.
"Hahaha, so you're my sister-in-law?" teased Hashirama.
"Hmm," Mikoto blushed, her cheeks turning red.
"Do you know what's going on, brother?" This time it was Tobirama who shifted the conversation.
"I think this is the afterlife, and for some reason, we're stuck here," replied Hashirama.
"Brother, try to hold my hand," Tobirama said suddenly.
Hashirama attempted to grab his hand, but the same thing happened—they couldn't touch each other.
Tobirama explained everything that had happened.
"Wait, why were you trying to hug her? You two aren't even married yet!" accused Hashirama.
"It was an adrenaline rush, I was just excited to see her again!" Tobirama defended himself.
"So, are you going to marry her?" asked Hashirama.
"Yes, I am," Tobirama replied, turning to Mikoto. "Will you marry me?"
Tears welled up in Mikoto's eyes, and she nodded. "Yes."
But before they could celebrate, Hashirama and Tobirama began arguing about how and why to get married until the door suddenly opened.
Uzumaki Mito, Hiruzen, and others walked in, Mito's face filled with anger.
"Hiruzen, why did you leave him alone?" demanded Mito.
"It was Sensei's order, and we thought he'd teleport here," Hiruzen explained.
"But Mikoto followed him to the fight," Mito pointed out and the room fell silent.
"Sensei couldn't use his space-time ninjutsu to bring us all here because it requires a lot of chakra. But with Mikoto, it was possible," Hiruzen added.
Tobirama, overhearing the conversation, scratched his head.
'When did I say I was going to teleport here?' Tobirama thought.
"Tobirama, was that part of your plan? I thought you only told them to retreat," Hashirama asked.
As Tobirama considered their words, he realized Hiruzen might have been making excuses, possibly because of pressure from another clan.
"Sensei... I mean, Tobirama-kun, Hiruzen and the others may have done this because people rejected him becoming Hokage," Mikoto suggested.
"Yeah, he came from a small clan and suddenly became Hokage after leaving you alone on the battlefield," Hashirama added.
"It was a good idea," Tobirama smiled, but little did he know that the more he watched Hiruzen and Danzo interaction and how they rules the villages, the angrier and more regretful he became.
---Time Skip 2 Days--
When Hiruzen returned, he brought 200 Jonin with him, including Aburame Toka, to the location where they had last been.
In the original timeline, they didn't return to the Land of Thunder, but this time they came back because they had Aburame Toka. Naturally, they were confident in fighting the shinobi from the Land of Thunder.
Then, they saw the Second Hokage corpse side by side with Mikoto Chinoike, Mikoto smiling in her final moments.
"It looks like we're too late," said one of the Jonin.
Mikoto's parents cried beside their daughter, she was their only child and they regretted not following Setsuna when he offered them the chance to migrate to Uzushiogakure.
Tobirama's students were crying and even the other ninjas were also in tears.
"What do we do now?" asked one of them.
Suddenly, another group of ninjas arrived. They were from Kumogakure.
"Please, stop. We're not here to fight," said one of them.
The Konoha ninjas, who were ready to strike back, paused.
"Our Second Raikage was killed by Kinkaku and Ginkaku force. It wasn't done by the village," explained the Jonin.
"Really?" Hiruzen responded.
"Yes, they killed our Kage and we from Kumogakure no longer wish to fight," said the Kumogakure Jonin.
"They're lying!" one of the Konoha ninjas shouted, still angry over the Hokage's death.
After discussing reparations and other matters, Kumogakure accepted the earlier agreements.
Two weeks later, Hiruzen became the Third Hokage.
