Chapter 21: Chapter 21 : Pidgey
Just as he was about to continue with his load, he heard the familiar sound of Poliwag using Double Slap. Ryan dropped everything and ran toward the sound. Rounding a corner on the beach, he spotted Poliwag repeatedly slapping something with its tail.
"Wait, is that a Magikarp?" Ryan breathed a sigh of relief. "As long as it's not something too dangerous."
Magikarp had been knocked onto the beach, and Ryan could already tell it wasn't going anywhere. "Not much meat on it, but hey, food is food," he thought, preparing to capture it.
Poliwag was proudly showing off its catch when a sharp bird cry echoed across the shore. Ryan's heart sank. He knew that sound—Pidgey.
"Poliwag, watch the sky! Use Water Gun!" Ryan shouted. But it was too late. Poliwag had no experience with emergency situations like this.
Thinking fast, Ryan threw an empty Poké Ball at the Pidgey, hoping to distract it for a moment. He wasn't aiming to capture it, just buy some time for Poliwag to react.
Pidgey noticed the ball flying toward it, and with a quick flash of its sharp eyes, it skillfully batted the ball away with a flick of its wings.
"That was its Keen Eye ability!" Ryan realized. Even though Pidgey brushed off the ball, it gave Poliwag just enough time to fire a Water Gun.
The water blast struck Pidgey mid-dive, soaking its wings and throwing it off balance. Flustered, the bird flapped its wet wings, trying to regain control.
"Poliwag, don't stop! Keep using Water Gun!" Ryan commanded, bending down to retrieve the Poké Ball.
Poliwag launched another Water Gun, but this time the shots were weaker and less accurate. Pidgey had regained its composure, flying evasively to dodge the attacks.
Despite Poliwag's efforts, the shots kept missing. But Poliwag didn't give up, knowing that if Pidgey landed a hit, it could be the end for them both.
Pidgey, realizing it had underestimated the situation, glanced at Ryan, eyeing the Poké Ball in his hand with wariness. Ryan stood still, the mere presence of the ball deterring the bird from making any rash moves.
Pidgey looked from the Magikarp on the ground to Poliwag, who was still firing its water jets. Reluctantly, the bird weighed its options.
With wet feathers making flight difficult, and the Poké Ball posing a constant threat, Pidgey decided it wasn't worth the risk. After a final, regretful look at the Magikarp, it turned and flew back to the jungle.
As soon as Pidgey left, Poliwag collapsed to the ground, utterly exhausted. Ryan rushed over, catching his partner before it fell. "Poliwag, are you okay?" he asked softly.
Panting, Poliwag let out a tired but triumphant, "Poli…"
Seeing that Poliwag was spent, Ryan tossed a Poké Ball at the Magikarp, easily capturing it.
With both Pokémon secured in their balls, Ryan picked up his gathered items and headed back to the shelter.
Back at the shelter, he released Poliwag and carefully offered it some fresh water, knowing that hydration was crucial for its recovery. After using so many Water Guns, it was dehydrated, and without enough moisture, its skin would dry out.
Ryan took care of his Pokémon, thinking ahead to their next adventure, but glad they had made it through this one.
