Chapter 436: Chapter 436: Stubborn Resistance - "Extermination" and Reconnaissance (Bonus Chapter 1)
"They've been confined to the reserves," Horus responded without hesitation when his brother raised the question about the Na'vi.
But the Shadow Moon Wolves' Primarch quickly realized the deeper meaning behind Magnus's inquiry. He added,
"Brother, are you suggesting those creatures could be turned into puppets of the Warp, manipulated to create chaos?"
"It's just a possibility," Magnus replied with a slight nod before elaborating:
"Given their current technological level and the absence of Eywa's guidance, even if they fall prey to the seduction of Chaos gods and daemons, they wouldn't be able to stir up anything significant.
If the forces of the Warp were to target them, it would likely be to use them as bait—merely a distraction to divert the attention of our patrol units."
Hearing this, Horus nodded slightly, his expression turning serious. He recognized the likelihood that the cunning Chaos gods and daemons might corrupt the Na'vi, using them as pawns to disrupt the defensive grid.
"You're right."
As Horus responded to his brother, his eyes flashed with cold determination. He raised a hand, activating the holoprojector within the craft to summon a hardlight screen.
Moments later, the image of the 2nd Company Captain of the Shadow Moon Wolves appeared on the display.
The Captain saluted Horus with respect and addressed him in a steady, serious tone:
"Father, what are your orders?"
Horus, his gaze sharp, replied firmly:
"Increase patrols around the Na'vi reserves, particularly monitoring for any signs of abnormal activity.
And—"
Horus paused, his eyes shifting toward Magnus, seeking his brother's approval.
"..."
Magnus, understanding Horus's intentions, nodded silently, indicating his agreement.
With his brother's approval, Horus issued further instructions to the Captain:
"If you detect anything suspicious, especially signs of Warp influence—eliminate it immediately. No exceptions. Do you understand?"
"Understood, Father," the Captain replied without hesitation.
"Good. Prepare at once."
"Yes, Father."
With that, the transmission ended, and the hardlight screen dissolved into the air, returning the cabin to silence.
As the command was issued, both Horus and Magnus shared a somber understanding: this Warp incursion might present the perfect opportunity to "cleanse" the Na'vi once and for all.
They could finally deal with this lingering threat in a decisive and permanent manner.
Horus's earlier glance at Magnus had been a silent question: "If I exterminate the Na'vi, will you support me?"
And Magnus, ever loyal to his brother, had given his tacit approval. After all, Magnus adhered to a principle of "better to err on the side of caution" when it came to xenos.
He firmly believed in the mantra: Better to kill a thousand innocent ones than let a single threat slip through.
The Avatar universe was Atlas's second major exploration and expansion effort, making Pandora one of the Imperium's earliest and most critical colonies.
Under the relentless efforts of the Engineering Corps, the area surrounding the Warp Gate had rapidly developed into a permanent human settlement, complete with all necessary facilities.
Before the official establishment of the Imperium, Pandora already boasted a population nearing 10 million.
The first settlers were primarily families of Atlas employees, who were drawn to Pandora by generous benefits and high wages.
This initiative aimed to balance the work and family lives of employees, encouraging them to bring their loved ones from the Prime Universe and other parallel universes to Pandora.
Next came waves of refugees from other universes.
The most notable groups hailed from the Doom, Pitch Black, and Pacific Rim universes, whose Earths had suffered catastrophic environmental collapse, rendering them unsustainable for large populations.
While Doom's Earth retained much of its infrastructure and only required repairs and partial reconstruction, the environments of Pitch Black and Pacific Rim Earths were far too hostile for human habitation.
In this context, Pandora, with its burgeoning infrastructure and resources, naturally became a haven for these displaced populations.
As the population surged, Pandora's colonies achieved full self-sufficiency, not only meeting their own needs but also exporting vast quantities of resources.
Pandora's support greatly facilitated Horus and the Shadow Moon Wolves' systematic conquest and integration of the Avatar universe.
Today, Pandora stands as a fully self-sustaining strategic hub, providing a robust foundation for the Imperium's continued expansion.
However, the Na'vi had never truly ceased their resistance during the Engineering Corps' ongoing expansion of the frontier bases and colonial cities.
Although the Na'vi had abandoned outright military confrontation, they resorted to passive resistance, blocking human construction projects through sit-ins and protests.
These tactics—lying down to obstruct construction sites—were reminiscent of the early environmentalist movements on the Prime Earth before Atlas's rise.
Those so-called "environmentalist" groups had often been tools of capitalists and aristocrats, designed to manipulate public opinion for profit.
Similarly, the Na'vi, under Eywa's orders, employed such methods to hinder humanity's development on Pandora.
Faced with these silent protests, Atlas's armed security forces refrained from using RDA's aggressive methods of opening fire on unarmed Na'vi.
However, the security teams also showed no leniency, efficiently using mechs to forcibly remove the Na'vi and ensure that construction projects proceeded without delay.
Before Samuel had personally dealt with Eywa by "consuming" its consciousness, Pandora's native fauna and flora had remained hostile to humans, vehemently rejecting any foreign presence.
To secure the colonies, Atlas not only deployed armed guards but also installed dense automated turret systems around its perimeters.
Since the beginning of large-scale construction, the sounds of gunfire and explosions had become an almost daily occurrence, a routine backdrop to life in the colonies.
Fortunately, the residential areas, shopping malls, and office buildings within the colonies were built with excellent soundproofing, ensuring that the noise posed minimal disturbance to the settlers.
The edges of the colonies were fortified with towering walls and layered defenses. As industrial production ramped up, an endless supply of weapons and ammunition flowed from local factories and the Warp Gate to the frontlines.
This meticulous defensive system ensured the safety of the colony's residents, allowing them to live and work in relative peace without undue concern for external threats.
After Samuel absorbed Eywa's consciousness and planted the Pure Flowers, Pandora's formerly hostile wildlife began to mellow, gradually displaying a surprising level of friendliness toward humans.
Predators that had once launched relentless assaults on human settlements now kept their distance from the colonies, even showing signs of peaceful coexistence.
But the Na'vi were another matter entirely.
Still harboring deep-seated hatred and mistrust, the Na'vi refused to reconcile.
They abandoned public demonstrations and withdrew into the dense rainforests, retreating to areas designated as "reserves" by Horus.
Despite Atlas's efforts to propose relocation plans to help the Na'vi adapt to the new colonial order, they stubbornly rejected all offers of cooperation.
Fueled by ingrained resentment and an unwillingness to adapt, the Na'vi rejected any notion of coexistence.
They clung to the belief that their homeland should remain untouched by outsiders, choosing instead a path of near-total isolation.
In their self-imposed exile, the Na'vi focused on ensuring the survival of their people.
They began adopting certain human practices, placing greater emphasis on reproduction and community-building. To safeguard their future from human interference, they constructed a hidden city deep within the rainforest, known as "The Sacred Tree City."
After nearly a decade of recovery, their population within this city had grown to over one million.
However, Horus did not perceive them as a genuine threat.
Their attempts to emulate human progress were clumsy and superficial. Coupled with their rigid, unchanging nature, it would take the Na'vi centuries to reach even the most rudimentary industrial age—assuming they ever got that far.
Currently, the Na'vi were stuck in a late Stone Age level of development, incapable of posing a meaningful challenge to the Imperium.
Without the guidance of "that traitor" Jake Sully, the Na'vi had no understanding of the true scope of humanity's power or the terror of its advanced civilization.
In truth, the Na'vi had already missed their best chance for survival.
Had they accepted Atlas's relocation plans and gradually integrated into the Imperium's framework, they might have secured basic protection and respect.
After all, the presence of allied alien races, like the Sangheili (Elites), which formed a significant portion of the Imperium's population, meant that the Primarchs could not simply exterminate xenos without just cause.
Unprovoked slaughter could lead to distrust among the Empire's alien allies, particularly the Sangheili, who valued honor and loyalty above all else.
That said, for more independent and less cooperative species like the Yautja (Predators), outright elimination remained a viable option when diplomacy failed.
But now...
With the looming threat of Chaos and the possibility of the Na'vi falling under its sway, a convenient pretext had emerged to justify their eradication.
Even if the Na'vi had no direct ties to Chaos, Horus was ready to brand them as heretics.
Despite their inability to pose any real threat to the Imperium, their persistent resistance and unyielding hostility had exhausted Horus's patience.
Given this legitimate opportunity for "cleansing," Horus had no intention of letting it slip away.
—
By this point, the aircraft carrying Horus and Magnus had reached the 2nd Company's ground base.
As the landing gear deployed and the accompanying Thunderhawks descended onto the tarmac, the two Primarchs, flanked by their Honor Guards, disembarked and made their way into the command building.
In the spacious command room, specially designed to accommodate the Primarchs' towering stature, Horus activated the central holotable, displaying a star map of the Avatar universe.
The map highlighted Earth, Mars, Europa, Titan, and nearby star systems like 61 Cygni, Alpha Canis Minor, Alpha Centauri, and Epsilon Eridani.
Earth remained the cradle of humanity in this universe, while planets like Mars and the other Solar colonies had long been developed as human settlements before Atlas's arrival.
Additionally, many of the habitable planets within nearby star systems had become thriving colonies under Atlas's leadership.
Of particular interest was the second planet in the Epsilon Eridani system, which Horus had heavily invested in developing and where the Shadow Moon Wolves' 1st Company was stationed.
This planet, located in the same position as Reach in the Halo universe, had been renamed "Wolfstar" by Horus.
Though it lacked the Forerunner heritage and pre-existing habitability of Reach, its favorable conditions and rich resources made it an ideal candidate for large-scale development, including the establishment of shipyards modeled after those in the UNSC and UEG.
Pointing to the star map, Horus turned to Magnus and said,
"Brother, these are the colonies under my control..."
Over the next hour, Horus provided Magnus with a detailed overview of the major colonies, discussing their populations, industries, and strategic significance. Together, the brothers plotted optimal patrol routes to investigate any signs of Chaos infiltration within the Avatar universe.
Meanwhile, following Horus's earlier orders, the 2nd Company of the Shadow Moon Wolves had already mobilized.
Their 1st Command Platoon and 2nd Assault Platoon began advancing toward the dense rainforests where the Na'vi had retreated.
Additionally, Helljumpers and Sangheili veterans from the 2nd Company had been covertly deployed around the Sacred Tree City, preparing for a reconnaissance operation to assess the Na'vi stronghold.
