Chapter 1: Manaka the witch boy
"That was a great meal" Manaka said with a smile on his face, after school meals were just something that couldn't be beaten.
Ofcourse he can be beaten by his sisters friend Sayaka since he does tease her for liking his best friend Kyosuke who was currently at the hospital, Madoka his twin sister knew but she didn't really talk about it that much.
Maybe he should tell her to support Sayaka though she probably will but Sayaka might get embarrassed too. Now he had to go back home since he had nothing interest to do at the moment, maybe he would just sleep and wake up until tomorrow.
As he was walking he suddenly tripped on something and then fell. "Ouch...that hurt"
Manaka dusted himself off, muttering under his breath about the uneven sidewalk. As he looked back to see what had tripped him, his eyes landed on a small object glinting faintly under the dim light of a streetlamp.
Curiosity piqued, he crouched down and picked it up. It was a tiny crystal gem, no larger than a marble, but its surface shimmered with an otherworldly glow. For a moment, he just stared at it, turning it over in his fingers.
"What's this? Some kind of fancy keychain charm?" he wondered aloud.
The moment his skin made full contact with the gem, a sharp pain shot through his hand, and his vision blurred. He staggered back, dropping the gem, but it didn't hit the ground. Instead, it hovered mid-air, radiating a dark, pulsating energy.
Manaka clutched his head as foreign images and feelings flooded his mind. They weren't his memories, but they felt so vivid, so real. He saw his sister, Madoka, fighting against grotesque, nightmarish creatures in a strange, labyrinth-like world. Her face was determined, but her eyes carried an overwhelming sadness.
"ACK?!!" Suddenly a dark energy started to seep into him, it was as if soul www being ripped apart from his body. Soon a dark pink grief seed appeared in front of him.
He held his head and finally calmed down. When he opened his eyes there was a cold glint in it. "So my sister is doing to disappear...I can't really let that happen can i"
"Witches and Magical girls huh" Manaka spoke as he grabbed the grief seed, he put it inside his bag and took a deep breath.
He decided to calm down a bit and then started walking home.
Soon it was night and Madoka could be seen next to her sleeping brother. "You didn't take your medicine again did you, Manaka?" she whispered softly, brushing a strand of hair from his forehead. Madoka's expression was a mix of worry and guilt, but she didn't wake him. Instead, she placed a small pill bottle on his nightstand before leaving the room, closing the door quietly behind her.
Unbeknownst to her, Manaka's dreams were anything but peaceful. He was back in that labyrinth-like world, surrounded by twisting, distorted shapes and echoes of laughter that sent chills down his spine. At the center of it all was a towering figure, a witch, its grotesque form pulsating with energy.
Manaka stood there, unarmed and unprepared, but he felt no fear. Instead, an unnatural calm washed over him. His hand instinctively reached into his bag, pulling out the grief seed. It pulsed faintly, almost as if responding to the witch's presence.
"Is this what you wanted?" he said, his voice steady despite the chaos around him. The witch let out a low, guttural screech, its many eyes locking onto the grief seed.
Suddenly, the gem he had found earlier appeared in his other hand, glowing brighter than before. It felt warm, alive even, and as it resonated with the grief seed, a surge of power coursed through his body. The dark energy from the seed and the light from the gem intertwined, enveloping Manaka in a blinding aura.
When the light faded, he stood transformed. His school uniform had been replaced by a sleek, dark outfit with faint pink accents that glimmered like the gem. In his hand was a weapon—a long black spear with a spiraling blade that radiated a pink energ.
Manaka's eyes were looking at the ground his expression wasn't seen, suddenly behind him a dark energy consumed the surroundings, the sky was enveloped in a domain of darkness, soon a large chandelier with pink glowing crystals began to form and slowly descended from the sky. It hung above Manaka like a twisted omen, casting eerie shadows that stretched across the landscape. The air was thick with tension, as if the entire world was holding its breath.
"Is this a labyrinth, am I some kind of...Witch-boy?" Manaka spinner his spear nonchalantly. he was baffled that his sister fight such things.
"Hmmm, well I guess those visions weren't wrong though and that Homura girl...is in love with my sister. I mean changing timelines just to save one person as you fail countless times is admirable and also sadistic, also did I override a witches labyrinth with mine?
e? That's… unsettling." Manaka's voice carried a mix of intrigue and unease as he surveyed his surroundings. The dark, crystalline labyrinth he had unintentionally created was both beautiful and grotesque, pulsating with an energy that felt intimately connected to him.
The chandelier above him began to hum, its pink crystals glowing brighter as if reacting to his thoughts. The spear in his hand felt natural, almost as if it were an extension of his own will. He could feel the labyrinth bending to him, its walls shifting and reshaping with his every step.
"Homura, huh? She must really be going through it if she's stuck in this cycle for Madoka," he muttered, spinning his spear once more. "But if what I saw is real, then Madoka's fate isn't exactly sunshine and rainbows either."
A sudden sound echoed through the labyrinth a faint, melodic tune like a music box. "oh the Manifestation of the witch I consumed is still here, yeah I should probably kill it even if i am dreaming at the moment"
Manaka walked and slowly his steps accelerated, he dashed towards the witch with his spear in his hand.
The witch stood there as if accepting it's fate, within seconds the spear pierced through the witch and then a definite silence made itself know and then a the witch dispersed into .items of light.
Manaka saw a figure in the glowing light, it was the image of a girl. "Thank you"
The girl said and she too disappeared. Manaka stood silently, there was a complicated amount of thoughts going around in his head.
In the end he just sighed. "Quite unfair huh, your wish is fulfilled but you won't fully benefit from it and in the end you will succumb to despair and lose your sense of sense unless you hunt down the shallow forms of your old kind like cannibalistic beings"
He looked at the labyrinth one more time and then collapsed it instantly, his clothes returned back to normal and then his vision faded as he returned back to the embrace of sleep.
The next day Manaka woke up and the first thing that greeted him was a headache. "Ofcourse, I didn't take my medicine, no wonder my head hurts..."
He sat up and then took the medicine which was conveniently placed on his nightstand. "Madoka probably kept it there, I am thankful"
Manaka went out of his room and towards the bathroom where he found hisother and his sister brushing their teeth.
"Morning, Manaka," Madoka greeted him with a bubbly tone, toothpaste foam on the corner of her mouth. "Finally awake, huh? You look like you had some rough dreams."
"Morning," Manaka mumbled, rubbing the back of his neck. His eyes darted between Madoka and their mother, Junko, who gave him a knowing smile.
"You look exhausted," Junko said as she rinsed her mouth. "Stayed up late again?"
Manaka chuckled nervously, avoiding the real reason for his fatigue. "Something like that."
Madoka shot him a suspicious look but didn't press further. Instead, she changed the subject. "So do you have anything to do today?"
"Not really, was just thinking about taking a stroll, I may have constant headaches but I am not going to stay cooped up at home unless it becomes worse
"Well, just don't overdo it," Madoka said, rinsing her toothbrush. "And make sure take your medicine with you just in case."
Manaka nodded absently, still lost in the haze of his dream—or was it something more? His mind replayed the moment he had pierced the witch, the echo of the girl's voice thanking him lingering like a whisper in the back of his mind.
After he was done freshening up, he greeted his dad Tomohisa and players with Tatsuya for a bit and the ate breakfast.
And now he was walking to school with his sister. Madoka was smiling along, her presence painted innocence and the boy who looked similar to her beside her...had the same presence but it was weaker. "Manaka Sayaka said she wanted to talk to you yesterday but you were at home passed
out already. Did something happen?" Madoka asked casually, her eyes scanning her brother's face for any sign of a reaction.
Manaka hesitated for a moment. "Sayaka? No, nothing happened. I just wasn't feeling great, so I knocked out early." He shrugged, trying to seem nonchalant, but Madoka wasn't convinced.
"You know, she seemed a bit worried," Madoka pressed gently, her tone cautious. "She kept glancing at Kyosuke's empty desk in class. I think it's been hard for her to handle him being in the hospital."
Manaka sighed inwardly. He didn't dislike Sayaka, but her emotional investment in Kyosuke sometimes felt like a disaster waiting to happen. Still, she was one of Madoka's closest friends, so he couldn't ignore her entirely.
"I'll talk to her if she needs me to," he finally said. "Not sure what I can do, but it's better than avoiding her."
Madoka smiled, clearly relieved. "Thanks, Manaka. You're a good brother, you know that?"
He smirked at her teasing tone. "Don't get used to it."
As they walked through the school gates, the usual buzz of morning chatter filled the air. Students milled about, some half-awake, others full of energy. Sayaka was waiting near the entrance, her bag slung over her shoulder and an unusually serious expression on her face. When she spotted them, she waved hesitantly.
"Hey, Manaka! Madoka!" Sayaka called out, her voice carrying just enough enthusiasm to mask whatever was on her mind.
"Morning, Sayaka!" Madoka replied cheerfully, waving back. She nudged Manaka lightly. "Go on, she's waiting for you."
Manaka rolled his eyes but approached Sayaka anyway, his hands stuffed in his pockets. "What's up? Madoka said you wanted to talk."
Sayaka hesitated, looking down at her shoes for a moment before glancing back up at him. Her usual bravado seemed dimmed, and her voice was quieter than normal. "I… I just wanted to ask you something. About Kyosuke."
Manaka raised an eyebrow. "What about him?"
She shifted uncomfortably, her fingers tightening around the strap of her bag. "Do you think… he'll ever play music again? Like, for real?"
"Is that your wish?" Manaka asked with an almost instant reply.
Sayaka blinked at his question, caught off guard. "My wish? What do you mean by that?"
Manaka leaned against the nearby wall, his gaze steady but distant. "You care about Kyosuke, right? More than just a friend. If you had the power to make his dreams come true, to make him whole again, would you do it?"
Sayaka's expression hardened, her eyes narrowing. "Of course I would! If I could help him, I'd do anything!" Her voice was firm
"I see, be careful what you wish for and If you believe enough maybe a miracle will happen and Kyosuke will be healed, You can't truly alter fate as it will just continue on being attracted to despair, so I think you should just visit him and face the reality of things, Kyosuke will and can never be a able to play ever again unless a miracle happens"Manaka said.
Sayaka stood silent for a moment, processing Manaka's words. Her hands fidgeted with the strap of her bag as the weight of his statement settled over her. "I… I know it's hard to accept, but I just can't help hoping. If there's a way, anything at all…" She trailed off, her voice growing softer, like she was convincing herself more than anyone else.
Manaka looked at her, his expression unreadable. "Hope can be dangerous, Sayaka. It makes you do things you wouldn't normally do. It can blind you to reality."
"You're no help" She muttered under here breath and returned back to her usual self.
