Tale of Conquerors

Chapter 6: Strength in Numbers

Day 8

The first rays of sunlight crept over the horizon as Alexander stood by the storage shelter, inspecting their remaining resources. The stockpile of wood and stone was dwindling after recent construction, and the planned barracks would require significantly more materials.

Elias appeared from the farm plot, his wiry frame covered in dirt and his tunic damp with sweat. "Morning, boss," he said, brushing his hands off on his trousers. "What's the plan today?"

Alexander gestured toward the woods beyond the camp. "We're running low on materials. Wood and stone first, then we head to the village for recruits."

Elias groaned but grabbed a crude axe from the tool rack. "Guess we're earning our keep today."

Resource Gathering

The day passed in a steady rhythm of labor. Alexander and Elias worked side by side, felling small trees and hauling logs back to the camp. The system's buffs for gathering made the process quicker, but it was still exhausting work.

By mid-afternoon, they had gathered enough wood to meet the requirements for the barracks, but stone proved more difficult to collect.

"Could really use a pickaxe," Elias muttered as he pried a chunk of rock loose with a sharpened stick. "Any chance the blacksmith's got one lying around?"

"I'll check when we're in the village," Alexander replied. "For now, we make do."

Elias grumbled but kept working, his efforts bolstered by Alexander's calm persistence.

A Trip to the Village

As the sun dipped lower, Alexander decided it was time to visit the village again. They loaded the cart with dried meat, berries, and a bundle of wolf hide, preparing to trade for tools and supplies.

The village square was busier than before, with farmers and traders milling about. Alexander's sharp eyes scanned the crowd, noting the curious glances that followed him and Elias as they approached the blacksmith's forge.

The blacksmith greeted them with a grunt, his soot-streaked face breaking into a faint grin. "Back already?"

"We need a pickaxe," Alexander said, placing the bundle of goods on the counter.

The blacksmith inspected the trade goods carefully before nodding. "Got one I can spare. Not new, but it'll hold up."

He handed Alexander a sturdy iron pickaxe, its handle worn smooth from use but still solid.

"Appreciate it," Alexander said, his tone steady.

As they turned to leave, a voice called out behind them.

"Wait!"

A New Recruit

A young man approached, his clothes worn but clean and his expression eager. He was taller than Elias, with broad shoulders and a confident stride.

"You're the one building out there, right?" the man asked, his tone curious but respectful.

Alexander nodded. "That's right."

The man hesitated, glancing toward the fields where other villagers worked. "I've been hearing stories. They say you're starting something new—something different."

Alexander studied him carefully. "What's your name?"

"Markus," the man replied. "I'm good with an axe, decent with a bow. If you've got room, I'd like to join."

Elias smirked. "Hope you're ready for hard work, Markus. The boss doesn't do easy."

Markus shrugged, a faint smile tugging at his lips. "Hard work's better than no work. When do we leave?"

Alexander's lips curved into a faint smile. "Now."

Day 9: The Barracks Begins

The next morning, the three men stood near the edge of the camp, the blueprint for the barracks spread out on a flat rock. The system chimed softly, offering updates on their progress.

[Objective Progress: Build a Basic Barracks]

Wood: 50/50 Units. Stone: 10/20 Units.

Alexander glanced at the notification, his sharp mind calculating the remaining effort. "We need more stone," he said simply.

Markus hefted the new pickaxe, testing its weight. "Leave it to me. I'll get it done."

Alexander nodded. "Elias, you'll help me with the frame. Markus, gather as much stone as you can carry. We'll start assembling what we have now."

Teamwork in Action

The day passed in a blur of activity. Markus returned repeatedly with armfuls of stone, his broad shoulders straining under the weight. Alexander and Elias worked on the wooden frame, their efforts bolstered by the system's construction buffs.

By dusk, the barracks had begun to take shape—a sturdy structure of wood and stone, with space for bunk beds and a central gathering area.

The system chimed again, marking their progress.

[Objective Complete: Build a Basic Barracks]

Reward: Unlock Path of Combat.

[Path of Combat Unlocked]

First Idea: Basic Training

Personal Buff: Alexander's ability to train recruits improves by 25%.

Territory Buff: Soldiers trained in the barracks gain +10% to combat effectiveness.

Alexander stepped back, surveying their work. The barracks was far from grand, but it was solid and functional—a symbol of the territory's growing potential.

"Not bad," Markus said, leaning on the pickaxe. "What's next?"

"Next," Alexander replied, "we start training."

Reflection by the Fire

That evening, the three men sat around the fire, their bodies aching from the day's labor. Markus leaned back against a log, his blue eyes glinting in the firelight.

"So, boss," he said, glancing at Alexander. "What's the endgame for all this?"

Alexander paused, his dark eyes reflecting the flickering flames. "Stability," he said finally. "A place where people can live, work, and defend themselves."

Markus nodded thoughtfully. "Sounds better than anything we've got now."

Elias smirked. "Just wait. The boss has a knack for making things work."

Alexander allowed himself a faint smile. "Get some rest," he said. "Tomorrow, we put the barracks to use."
