Whispers of the Summer Sky

Chapter 4: 4 | A Different Kind of Escape

The next day, Arjun arrived at the hilltop earlier than usual again, the air feeling cooler than the previous nights. The sky was a soft lavender hue, signaling the end of a warm day. He had barely sat down when Naina appeared, a small backpack slung over one shoulder.

"Wow. You're punctual," she said, plopping down next to him.

"I could say the same about you," Arjun replied, glancing at her bag. "What's with the backpack? Running away from home?"

Naina grinned. "Tempting. But no, it's just snacks. Thought we could share."

She pulled out a packet of chips, some chocolates, and a couple of juice boxes. Arjun raised an eyebrow.

"You always carry around a convenience store?"

"Only when I plan to hang out with sketchy strangers," she teased, handing him a juice box.

Arjun shook his head, smiling despite himself. They sat quietly, munching on the snacks as the last traces of daylight faded. The soft rustle of the wind and the distant sound of crickets filled the silence.

"Do you ever feel like you're stuck?" Naina asked suddenly, her voice thoughtful.

Arjun glanced at her. "Stuck how?"

"Like... you're in this life you didn't choose. And no matter what you do, you can't break free from it," she explained, staring at the horizon.

Arjun nodded slowly. "Yeah. Sometimes."

"Sometimes I wish I could just disappear," Naina continued, her voice barely above a whisper. "Not in a depressing way. Just... vanish and see who notices."

"That's heavy," Arjun said, taking a sip from his juice box. "But I get it. Sometimes, I feel invisible even when I'm around people."

Naina turned to him, eyes wide. "Exactly! It's like... you're there, but not really there. Like a ghost."

"Yeah," Arjun agreed. "A ghost with homework."

Naina laughed, the sound light and genuine. "A ghost with homework. That's a new one."

They sat in silence again, the air between them filled with an unspoken understanding. Arjun found himself relaxing in her presence, the usual weight of his thoughts feeling lighter somehow.

"Hey," Naina said after a while. "Let's play a game."

"A game?" Arjun echoed, skeptical.

"Yeah. It's called 'Anywhere But Here.' We take turns naming a place we'd rather be and why," she explained, her eyes sparkling.

Arjun considered it for a moment. "Okay. You first."

"Easy," Naina said, leaning back. "A beach in Goa. Warm sand, the sound of waves, and no one to bother me."

"Sounds nice," Arjun admitted. "Alright, my turn. Somewhere in the mountains. Quiet, cold, and peaceful."

"Nice," Naina nodded. "Next: Paris. Not for the Eiffel Tower or any of that tourist stuff. Just to sit in a little café and people-watch."

Arjun smiled. "I can see that. I'd pick Kyoto. The old temples, the cherry blossoms... feels like a different world."

They went back and forth, naming places real and imagined, each destination an escape from the lives they felt trapped in. By the time they ran out of ideas, the sky was a canvas of stars, the moon casting a gentle glow over the hilltop.

"We should do this more often," Naina said softly, her gaze fixed on the stars.

Arjun nodded. "Yeah. We should."

They sat in silence for a few more moments, the world around them fading away. For the first time in a long while, Arjun felt a sense of peace.

And for now, that was enough.
