Chapter 7: Chapter-7. (Baby Donuts).
It's been a week since I started working in Carmila's bakery. She was a lovely girl. Like Christina, her parents were also influential. They wanted her to pursue an arts degree and marry a rich man, becoming his trophy wife. I could not help but roll my eyes off at such mentalities. They all see women as only fit for becoming a person's wife and bearing their children, but Carmila does not want it to be her future. She left her parents' house and came to New York. The first person she met was Christina. Like an angel Christina was, she helped Carmila get settled and open a bakery for her by becoming her investor.
"Rose, could you please check on the back? It's almost time to open." Carmila's voice broke the chain of my thoughts, bringing me back to reality. "Ohh... yes, it will do." I walked back to the pantry. Two more bakers were arranging the goods on the trays. Excuse me, is everything ready?"
Lilly, who was putting the croissants in the trays answered, "Yeah, I will get it out in a minute." Benny who was still checking on the puff pastries, yawned and commented, "Tell me, why do we have to come here so early in the morning?" Both me and Lilly rolled our eyes at him. "Let me help you get these things on the trays," I suggested while putting the lemon tarts on another tray. "Thanks, babe. You are a lifesaver."
I chuckled at her compliment, "You don't have to exaggerate. We all work here." Lilly again passed her flirty smile, "Tell me why God did not make you a man?" Benny shot her a glare while I broke into laughter. "I ain't a male because Benny was the one for you." I replied while peeking at Benny, "Right, Benny?" My statement made him almost lose his balance, "Huh? Well, I don't know what you talking about."
"Yeah, yeah. Keep acting dumb, it suits you." Lilly shot a reply at him. "Whatever, looser." Benny rolled his eyes while retrieving the tray from the oven. "And it's done., Lilly whispered while I was almost done keeping my tarts on the tray. "You go first, I am almost done."
"No problem, babe." Lilly walked out when I focused my gaze on Benny who was also looking in Lily's direction. "If you like her so much why don't confess your feelings, Ben?" Benny stopped in the middle and stared at me. "Oh, don't make that face, it's all on your face. I think even Lilly likes you but she is waiting for you to ask first."
"Rose, don't bother yourself with your delusions and even if she likes me then why can't she confess first? Is it too hard for you girls to take the first step?"
"So, you have a problem with Lilly not asking you out first?" Benny shut his mouth as if he did not want to answer. "What if she asks you out? Will you accept her proposal?"
"I..it's none of your buisness, Carter." Idiot. He clearly likes Lilly yet he hesitates to confess his feelings but he is right. It's none of my business. "Fine, as you say." I picked up the tray and walked out. Entering the front area, I put the tray on the display section. I looked around, Carmila was talking on the phone, probably taking someone's order while Lilly went back to get other things. I glanced at my wristwatch. It was still too early for any customers to arrive. I can clean the counter meanwhile. Grabbing the wiping cloth, I sprayed some cleaning agent on it and started wiping it when the bell hung at the entrance rang. "Welcome to Sweet Home Bakery, what would you like..." Words stuck in my throat as I saw the person standing in front. Fucking hell, this is some way to start off the day. Carmila was done with the order and when her gaze fell on the person, she greeted him, "It's nice to see you, Parker."
"Good morning, Carmila," Parker replied with his deep voice. Though he was greeting her his gaze was still on me. Why is he shooting daggers in my direction? What did I do now? I continued wiping ignoring his presence but his piercing gaze and big frame were making it hard. "What brought you here?" Carmila asked. "I needed five pieces of your baby donuts." Baby Donuts? He does not seem to have a sweet tooth. Why in the world does he need this for or whom?
As, this baby donuts were specially made for children under fifteen. These donuts were smaller in size compared to normal donuts. Also, it had less sugar content and was according to children's sugar limits. This was Carmila's idea and it was also one of the reasons why they were famous in the locality. It was a hit among the children and their parents too had no problem buying those donuts. "Okay, that will be fifteen dollars."
"Fine." With this, he retrieved his wallet and passed his card. I could not help but roll my eyes off seeing the scene. Typical Rich Brats and their obsession with cards. "Do you have any specific flavor in your mind?" Dark Chocolate. Bitter just like his personality. I moved to another side of the counter to clean when the bell again rang. I looked back when a small girl entered. "Uncle! Donuts, donuts! Sophie wants donuts!" She is so cute. Her hairs were tied in two pigtails on each side of her head. She also wore a beige sweater on which a cute teddy was made. Is she alone? Wait she was calling her uncle. Where is her uncle? I tried to look out but there was no one. "Uncle, uncle, donuts, donuts." She started hopping towards the counter. My gaze followed until she stopped near the counter beside him. Wait..Is Parker the uncle of this cute little baby? My eyes widened in shock, first staring at the little girl and then the bitter uncle of hers. "Sophie, what are you doing here?" Even Parker was somehow a little surprised to see that little baby. "How did you come here?"
"Sophie wanted donuts but you were late. So, Daddy took me here." The girl just finished speaking when another man entered. "Sophie, I asked you to wait for me. Why did you run off?"
"You let Sophie run off to the shop...alone?" Parker's low but serious voice echoed in the bakery leaving chills.
