A New Life in Fairy Tail

Chapter 16: Mavis

When Noah returned to the campsite, everyone was already preparing dinner. Laxus saw him and walked over.

"Where did you go just now? I couldn't find you anywhere."

"That's something you'll only know when you become an S-Class wizard," Noah said to Laxus.

"It's not like I'm curious! I'll be an S-Class wizard soon enough, too." Seeing that he wasn't going to get an answer, Laxus turned and walked away.

"You'd better work hard, then!" Noah called after him. Hearing this, Laxus only walked away faster.

Just then, Cana came up to Noah. "Thank you, Noah. If you hadn't said anything, I don't know when Dad and I would have ever acknowledged each other."

"Don't worry about it. If I were in your shoes, trying to call a man I hadn't seen for the first six years of my life 'Dad' would have been incredibly difficult, especially when he didn't even recognize me when I was standing right in front of him."

"But," Noah turned his head to look at Gildarts, who was holding a mug of ale while boasting to other guild members about how cute his daughter was, "isn't everything great now?"

"Yes," Cana said, also looking over at Gildarts. "Everything is great now."

"Don't think too much about it. For now, let's just go enjoy the party!" Noah said, leading the way toward the center of the festivities. Cana watched his back for a moment, then followed him.

Everyone celebrated enthusiastically through the night, sleeping in the tents they had prepared. The next day, they packed up their things and returned to the guild.

Back at the guild hall, Noah asked Makarov for pictures of the First Master, Mavis Vermillion, and the Second Master, Precht. His reason was that, as a new S-Class wizard, he should at least know what the previous masters looked like.

Makarov didn't think much of it and gave him the photos. Noah studied them, memorized their faces, returned the pictures to Makarov, and then took a mission and headed out.

Noah completed the mission quickly and then immediately returned to Hargeon Port, where he rented a boat and set out to sea. He was going back to Tenrou Island to find Mavis and learn magic from her.

Upon returning to the island, he moored the small boat and began his search. He started near Mavis's grave and gradually expanded his search area, eventually finding a building. This must have been the place where Mavis had lived alone for seven years as a child. Inside, there was a rich collection of books, and the surroundings were neatly kept. Noah could feel the flow of magic; clearly, a spell was protecting the books and the building.

He glanced at the collection and found many books that the guild's library didn't have. He decided to set up his camp nearby, planning to read while he searched for her.

He had no sooner set up his camp and returned to the building than he found a small, barefooted girl standing there. She had large green eyes, long, wavy blonde hair, small wings on the sides of her head, and a single lock of hair that stuck straight up. She wore a long, flowing cloak and looked just like a fairy.

She was the founder and First Master of Fairy Tail, Mavis Vermillion.

Noah was slightly startled but calmed down immediately; she was the one he had been looking for. He walked up to her and asked, "Excuse me, are you the First Master of Fairy Tail, Mavis Vermillion?"

Mavis tilted her head as she looked at him. "Yes, that's me. You were looking for me on the island, weren't you?"

"Mhm. The other day, I felt like someone was watching me, so I came back to look, since this is the guild's sacred ground. The voice I heard when I received Fairy Glitter... that was you, wasn't it, First Master?"

"That's right! I saw your determination to protect the guild, so I entrusted Fairy Glitter to you!"

"Thank you, First Master. The guild is my home, so of course, I have to protect it," Noah said with a firm tone.

Mavis was delighted to see his conviction, as it was her own idea to build the guild into a harmonious family in the first place.

"First Master, have you always been here?"

"I've mostly been asleep. I only woke up when you all came to the island. I saw your fight with Gildarts. It was very well fought."

"It was alright. First Master, I want to learn magic from you."

"Learn magic from me?" Mavis looked puzzled. "Aren't you already very strong?"

"I want to learn even more magic. I've read almost all the books in the guild's library. I was originally planning to visit other libraries, but now that I've met you, of course I want to learn from you, First Master. But I don't know if that would be a bother to you."

Mavis herself loved to read, and she was even more pleased to hear that Noah felt the same way. She thought for a moment. "Of course. It's been pretty boring by myself since I woke up."

"Thank you, First Master!" Noah said, and immediately began to ask her all sorts of questions about magic.

Mavis was truly worthy of being the creator of Fairy Tail's Three Great Magics. Her knowledge was boundless. Through her explanations, many things that Noah previously didn't understand were finally resolved.

Because he had already prepared to stay on the island for a while, Noah became so engrossed in magic that he lost all track of time. A week flew by in an instant.

He finally remembered that he hadn't reported his completed mission back at the guild. He quickly said goodbye to Mavis and returned to Fairy Tail.

After turning in his mission report, he told Makarov that he had found the First Master. Makarov was completely dumbfounded. He immediately followed Noah back to Tenrou Island to meet Mavis.

Mavis, having observed the guild during the S-Class Trial, was very pleased with its current state. "You've made the guild into a wonderful place, Third Master," she said.

Makarov was giddy with joy for the entire day.

He asked Mavis if she wanted to return to the guild, but she said that since she was a ghost, she would remain on the island. However, she did ask Noah to bring her books to read, which he naturally agreed to.

They agreed that Noah would try to visit Tenrou Island once a week. With that settled, Noah and Makarov returned together. To make the trip faster, Noah specifically learned Instantaneous Movement and Teleportation magic.

From then on, every week after finishing his missions, Noah would teleport to Tenrou Island with newly bought books for the eagerly awaiting Mavis. While Mavis read the new books, Noah would research magic. After she finished, they would study magic together.

Noah had many ideas about magic that he wanted to bring to life. The first was a super-wide-range detection spell. He knew that in the future, he would often need to find people, so the greater the range and accuracy, the better.

After discussing it with Mavis, he spent some time developing it and was finally successful. The spell's range, accuracy, and stealth were all dependent on how much magic power the user poured into it; its effectiveness was a direct reflection of the caster's strength. Noah tested it and found that with his power, he could easily and accurately find a specific person within Magnolia and its surrounding areas with extremely high stealth.
