Chapter 19: Rosemary Village
"Someone is coming to attack the village?" The chief stared, his first instinct being disbelief. "You're not joking, are you?"
"Do I look like I'm joking? I've been here before; you know I'm an S-Class wizard of my guild. Besides, even if it's a false alarm, all we've wasted is two or three hours evacuating the villagers. But if someone really is coming to attack, what then? By the way," Noah's projection added, "the enemy is coming from that direction. You need to organize everyone to flee the other way. I will go and delay their advance."
The chief realized he had a point. If an attack was truly coming, he couldn't bear the consequences. He immediately began to organize the evacuation.
After leaving the chief's house, the Thought Projection didn't immediately go to face the enemy. Instead, it ran to another house and called out, "Erza, open the door, quick!"
After shouting several times and waiting a moment, a set of footsteps approached. The door opened, and a little girl with short, scarlet hair came out. Her eyes were still heavy with sleep.
"Big Brother Noah? What are you doing here so late?"
The projection grabbed her hand, pulled the door shut, and started running towards another house. "Someone is about to attack," he said as they ran. "It's not safe here anymore. We need to find Simon and Kagura, and then we'll all evacuate together."
They arrived at Simon and Kagura's house. Noah knocked and shouted, "Simon, Kagura, open up!"
Footsteps sounded, and Simon opened the door. Seeing Noah and Erza, he asked curiously, "What are you two doing here so late?"
"Someone is trying to attack the village. You and Kagura need to come with me, quickly."
Simon froze. "Someone's attacking here? How is that possible?!"
"What would I gain from lying to you? Look, the chief is already getting people to evacuate."
Simon could indeed hear the chief calling for people to come out and seek shelter. He rushed back inside, woke up his little sister Kagura, and they hurried out. By now, Erza was much more awake, but Kagura was still groggy, her head bobbing as she followed behind Simon.
"Simon, hold Kagura's hand tight and don't let go," the projection instructed. "You three need to follow the chief and the others and get to safety."
"What about you, Big Brother Noah?" Erza and Simon asked at the same time.
Noah's projection turned to look in the direction the dark magic cult was coming from. "I have to go and stop them."
"We can help you!" Erza said anxiously.
Simon had the same expression, clearly wanting to help as well.
Noah gently patted Erza's head and said to them, "I've taught you magic, and you've trained under my guidance for a while. But that only gives you a certain ability to resist; it doesn't mean you're ready to face a large group of wizards. Furthermore, I'm currently a Thought Projection, which means I don't have much magic power. I also have to conserve a certain amount for emergencies, so I can't use large-scale magic against the enemy. I can only use hit-and-run tactics to slow them down until my real body or reinforcements arrive. I've placed a marker on your left hands. If you're in danger, activate it with your magic. If I sense something is wrong, I'll come immediately. Now, go with the chief and evacuate. I have to go delay the enemy."
Noah's projection cast a spell on the back of their left hands, and a small Fairy Tail emblem appeared on each of them. With that done, he turned and ran in the direction of the approaching cult. Erza still wanted to follow, but Simon took Kagura's hand and said to Erza, "Let's go. If we're safe, Noah can focus on fighting the enemy."
Erza understood. She followed Simon and Kagura, found the chief, and evacuated with the other villagers.
As Noah's projection ran towards the enemy, he used his senses to confirm that Erza and the others were moving away from him. He couldn't help but smile. That's what good comrades do.
He sensed that the cult was now very close and began to make his preparations.
Just as the main force of the dark magic cult entered a small grove of trees, a chain of explosions erupted from the ground. The cultists at the front were sent flying, and a few were seriously injured.
"Who is it?! Who dares to set an ambush here and oppose the great Dark Wizard Zeref?!" a man who was clearly the leader shouted.
Just then, Noah's projection stepped out from behind a tree. The leader saw that it was just a child and his eyes glinted with malice. "It's just a kid!" he yelled to his subordinates. "Grab him! Our mission is to capture children anyway. A high-quality one like this will be able to do a lot of work."
The subordinates were still shaken by the explosions and were reluctant to go forward. Seeing them hesitate, the leader berated them. "Fools! You can tell from the power of that explosion that it was a one-time thing! How could a brat like this have so many magic items? Get him!"
The leader assumed Noah had used items for the ambush and kept urging his men forward. His men thought it over and realized it made sense. Besides, capturing the boy would surely earn them praise from the leader. They swarmed towards Noah.
Seeing the cultists charge, Noah's projection put on a frightened expression and turned to run back towards the village.
Seeing the direction of his escape, the leader immediately gave an order. "The brat is running towards the village! All men, give chase! When we get to the village, kill all the adults and capture all the children!"
"YEAH!" the cultists roared in response and chased madly after him.
Noah's projection glanced back, saw that all of them were following, and turned to continue running. Once he sensed that all the cultists had more or less entered the designated area, he raised two fingers and activated his magic trap.
"Hah!"
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
The ground where the cultists stood erupted in a series of violent explosions. The intense flames lit up the area as if it were day. The earth was completely overturned, and bodies were sent flying into the sky amidst a cloud of smoke and dust.
A few seconds later, the cultists began to fall from the sky. The air was filled with the sound of their groans.
Noah's projection used his magic to scan the area and couldn't help but marvel to himself. This type of hidden magic trap is really effective. The magic consumption is low, it's fast to set up, and the power is decent. It can be triggered by proximity or manually. The only downside is the short duration. But still, this is a world with magic. The durability of people here is just ridiculous. To think that no one died from that.
My other self used Fairy Law and specifically controlled its power so it wouldn't be lethal. But here, I didn't hold back at all, and still no one died... wait, that's not right!
