Chapter 27: Assault on the Dark Magic Cult
After a short wait, someone came to invite Noah and Laxus to board the ship. They followed him aboard. On the deck, the personnel from the Royal Army and the Magic Council were already prepared. At the leader's command, all the ships, loaded with combatants, set sail.
The ship Noah and Laxus were on, followed by two other vessels, arrived in a stretch of sea where they could see an island in the distance. On the island was a building that had only just begun construction. This was clearly one of the dark magic cult's strongholds.
The official in charge of their ship approached Noah. "The dark cult's base is up ahead. Lord Noah, what is your plan?"
"First, I'd like to ask what your original plan was." Noah wanted to know their strategy so he could figure out the best way to help.
"Our original plan was to divide into two teams. One team would get as close to the island as possible until detected, at which point the combat members would land, supported by the ship's magic cannons, and quickly assault the enemy's position, drawing as much of their attention as possible. The other team would circle around to the back of the island and, once the battle in the front began, sneak ashore to start the rescue operation."
Noah thought for a moment after hearing the plan. "We will assist with the frontal assault," he told the official.
The official, having heard of Noah's combat prowess, was delighted. He went to arrange his men for the impending action.
Noah then turned to Laxus. "In a bit, I'm going to cast a big spell. I need you to help block any attacks that come our way."
Laxus was a little confused but agreed nonetheless.
After the personnel were assigned, the ship tasked with the rescue mission departed first. After a while, the main assault force began to move. They approached as slowly and quietly as possible, using magic to conceal the ships. But as they neared the island, they were still detected by a magic item. A shrill alarm echoed across the entire island.
Knowing they had been exposed, the ships accelerated, charging towards the shore as the dark cultists on the island began their attack.
Noah began his preparations. He held his hands diagonally in front of his chest, palms facing each other, and a golden sphere of light materialized between them.
Laxus saw this and exclaimed, "Fairy Law?!"
"That's right. It's the improved version. It no longer has the drawback of consuming life force and instead consumes magic power, which makes it perfect for a situation with this many enemies," Noah explained as he gathered energy. The other soldiers on the ship saw what he was doing and instinctively moved to stand in front of him, shielding him from the magic flying from the shore.
The moment the ship hit the beach, Noah completed his preparations. He clapped his hands together, and magic circles appeared in his eyes.
"Fairy Law!"
A gigantic magic circle appeared in the sky above the island. A golden light instantly filled everyone's vision. When the light faded, every single member of the dark magic cult was lying on the ground.
The official on the ship was ecstatic. A difficult assault and rescue mission had just been turned into easy mode, countless times simpler than they had anticipated. He thanked Noah profusely, then hurried to arrange his men to secure the prisoners and rescue the captives.
Laxus, however, turned to Noah, annoyed. "If you were just going to use a Grand Magic spell to take out all the enemies, what did you bring me here for?"
"It's not like I can cast Grand Magic spells nonstop. There's always a recovery time. That's when it would have been your turn to shine." Noah glanced around to make sure no one else was listening, then said to Laxus, "Did you see the look in the official's eyes after I used Fairy Law? Did it seem familiar?"
Laxus thought about it seriously. As Noah had said, there was something familiar about the official's expression. He suddenly realized—it was the same look of respect that other people always gave his grandfather, Makarov.
Seeing the look of dawning comprehension on Laxus's face, Noah continued. "I displayed sufficient strength and achieved a great result, so people naturally respect me. From the way you were acting before, you don't like it when people call you 'Gramps' grandson,' probably because you feel like people don't see your own efforts and only know you because of him. But you need to think about it. Gramps spent decades earning his strength, his achievements, and his status. You don't have that same level of strength, achievement, or status yet, so isn't it normal for people to immediately think of your grandfather when they meet you?"
"If you want to escape that, then get stronger. Do greater things. When you become one of the Ten Wizard Saints, or even surpass them, who will still call you 'Makarov's grandson'? By then, people will probably be saying that Makarov is your grandfather!"
Laxus's imagination flared as he pictured the scene Noah described, and he couldn't help but feel a thrill of excitement.
Noah saw his expression and knew that Laxus had taken his words to heart. Perhaps this conversation would prevent, or at least lessen, Laxus's future rebellious phase. Still, he made a mental note to talk to Makarov and have him communicate better with Laxus to avoid any misunderstandings.
Seeing that he had mostly recovered, Noah ignored the still-daydreaming Laxus and went to find the busy official. "It doesn't look like we're needed much here anymore. Do you know where the other teams are? We'd like to go and help them."
The official asked with concern, "You just cast such a powerful spell, sir. Don't you need to rest more?"
"I've already recovered enough. I can use that Grand Magic spell again, so I was thinking I could help the other teams and reduce their casualties."
"Thank you so much for your help!" The official's eyes were filled with gratitude and respect. He quickly contacted the other teams to inform them that Noah was coming to assist, then gave Noah their positions.
Noah pulled the still-fantasizing Laxus along, said goodbye to the official, and used his teleportation magic to move them to one of the other team's ships.
Because they had been notified in advance, the people on this ship weren't panicked by their sudden appearance and continued with their work. Noah saw that they had already begun their assault on the island. Without a word, he immediately began to charge his spell. The brilliant light instantly drew the fire of the dark cultists on the shore. Laxus and the other soldiers helped block the incoming magic.
"Fairy Law!"
When the light faded, all that was left was a field of unconscious cultists. The official here was overjoyed, ordering his men to secure the prisoners and rescue the captives while thanking Noah nonstop, the delight and reverence practically overflowing from his eyes.
Laxus watched the official's reaction with a thoughtful expression. Noah glanced at him, then ignored him and asked this official for the location of the next team. Then, he took Laxus and teleported them to the next ship.
