Chapter 654: Solution - (2)
The weather remained cold at the end of February, but for werewolves, it was nothing to worry about. They lay on the ground, watching Felix Harp diligently working under the moonlight, whispering among themselves.
"What is he doing?"
"Not sure, but it looks quite complicated!"
"How are you planning to spend that money?"
"Haven't decided yet. I did some math, it's enough to buy two years' worth of discounted Wolfsbane potion."
"I heard 'Future World' company recruited a bunch of creatures, including werewolves!"
"You want to give it a try?"
"It might be too late..."
"Can't say for sure, there were ads in the paper a while back."
"Giants who can read?"
"Cough—" Felix raised his head from the thick dew, clearing his throat. "Almost done, let's give it a try."
"Try what?" asked one of the werewolves on the ground.
"To see if I can turn you back into humans," Felix smiled, flipping open his book of runes. Colorful symbols flew out like butterflies, coalescing into shape in mid-air. Felix extended his hand, and the runes formed a bundle of magic, which he flicked onto one of the werewolves.
Felix watched him expectantly.
After a moment, the werewolf's body reverted to its human form. Felix tossed him a piece of clothing to put on, just in case any villagers happened to pass by and see.
The wizard stopped his ecstatic movements, his face still showing a look of shock. He looked at his hands incredulously.
"I... I've turned back?" he exclaimed in disbelief, looking up at the sky. Although it was getting brighter, the full moon still hung in the air. He looked back at his fellow werewolves lying on the ground, as if about to faint.
"Mr. Harp, does this mean... I'm not a werewolf anymore?"
The people on the ground also quieted down, holding their breath, waiting for Felix's answer.
Felix shook his head.
"This is the effect of magic. If—" he hesitated for a rare moment, then shook his head again, "No, I can't perform complete healing—I'm not a healer."
"But I've completely turned back!" the wizard exclaimed loudly.
"I found a workaround. I approached the problem from the perspective of ancient runes." Felix saw the wizard about to speak and raised his hand to stop him, continuing, "Through research—though not mine—werewolf saliva is highly toxic, at least to Muggles, and for wizards, once bitten by a werewolf, they'll irreversibly transform into one."
"The so-called transformation into a werewolf is actually the werewolf poison altering some of the wizard's body structure. You can think of it simply as: you become like a magical creature, gaining an additional magical organ for spellcasting, though that's just a metaphor. The reality is much more complex..."
"This magical organ is influenced by the waxing and waning of the moon, spontaneously absorbing magic from the wizard's body on the full moon day, forcing you into a series of complex werewolf transformations."
"We gained an additional magical organ?" the werewolf asked in confusion. "Can it be removed?"
"No," Felix sighed. "At least not by me. Like I said—calling it a magical organ is just a metaphor. In reality, your body has been completely changed by the werewolf poison—blood, saliva, organs, bones... this isn't my field of study."
"Then what have you done to me?"
"Reversed the transformation process. If we consider the werewolf transformation as a curse, then what I've done is found a way to break the curse, albeit temporarily."
"Can we learn it?" the werewolf asked eagerly.
"I can make it public, but learning it would be too difficult. This magic involves thousands of ancient runes..." Felix said. "I'll try to refine it as much as possible over the next week, but I'll need your cooperation."
On the way back to the castle, Felix pondered all the way. His biggest discovery tonight was actually obtaining the magical structure of werewolves from a magical perspective. And based on this, he actually had two vague ideas.
Besides the ancient magic he demonstrated, the 'reversal of werewolf transformation'—
They could also try using advanced human transfiguration. Ordinary human transfiguration only changes appearance and physique (although that's already advanced material), but Felix's idea was to take it a step further, changing the magical structure inside the body as well.
This approach is similar to Animagi. Except its transformed form is human.
Previously, there were wizards who attempted this approach, but since the internal body structure of the werewolf remained unchanged after transformation, it naturally had no effect. Now, with Felix's discovery of the magical structure of werewolves, the situation might be quite different.
Walking down the street, Felix suddenly had a thought: Why does this resemble the bloodline magic researched by Salazar Slytherin? He pondered for a while, smiling. Had he reached this level, using ancient runes to decipher others' magical paths? It felt really good...
The first two methods were merely addressing the symptoms, not the root cause.
The first method—ancient magic 'reversing werewolf transformation'—actually restores the wizard in werewolf state to human form and allows them to safely pass the full moon period in human form. Overall, it can be considered an alternative to Wolfsbane potion, with the advantage of maintaining human form, but the disadvantage of being difficult to learn.
If it weren't for Felix's help, Lupin wouldn't stand a chance of mastering it. But once learned, he could bid farewell to Wolfsbane potion. This seems to verify a view in the magical world: there's a reciprocal relationship between magical remedies and magic.
The second method—involving changes to internal body structure—is similarly extremely difficult. Felix believed that besides Dumbledore, no one else could do it. But now, with the werewolf magical structure diagram he provided, the difficulty might plummet.
The benefit is that the wizard is in a pure human state during the transformation.
As for the last idea—Felix frowned—it's to completely destroy the magical structure infected by werewolf poison, once and for all. Then the werewolf wouldn't be a werewolf anymore. But this method involves the essence of magic, one mistake could result in even wizards unable to do it, becoming a dud.
Dumbledore's cautiousness about magic echoed in his mind.
Actually, there's a fourth idea, Felix thought. That is to publish the magical structure diagram of werewolves. Perhaps Snape, Belby, or Slughorn, these potion masters, could propose solutions from the perspective of potions.
Felix planned to ask Lupin about his thoughts when the time came. It's just right that March 10th is his birthday.
The next morning.
Harry knocked on the door of the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor's office.
He came to avoid Ron and Hermione's incessant questioning. He had already been forced to reveal the details of Dumbledore's family dinner he saw in the Pensieve, and he didn't want to talk about what happened afterward, so he made up an excuse to come out for some fresh air.
But he found himself warmly welcomed by Professor Bathsheba, which surprised Harry a bit.
"Please have a seat, Harry," Grindelwald said kindly, casually putting a book aside.
"Professor Bathsheba, are you studying ancient runes?" Harry asked, quite surprised.
"Why, can't someone of my age learn new knowledge?" Grindelwald said, glancing at Harry's hand, "You really made a splash yesterday, Harry."
"Oh, um, I guess so," Harry mumbled.
"I heard you want to become an Auror in the future, a good idea," Grindelwald said softly. "I happen to know a few powerful magics that should be helpful to you. Not dark magic," he added when he saw Harry's expression.
Harry muttered a thank you. He was actually worried that Professor Bathsheba was preparing to teach him dark magic, after all, this professor had admitted to following the dark wizard Grindelwald before.
It was only at this moment that Grindelwald seemed to casually mention it.
"I saw you wearing a black gemstone ring yesterday, why aren't you wearing it today?"
