A Psyker's reincarnation

Chapter 9: Classes

He was right to think it was a turning point, as there had been drastic changes to his activities and schedule.

They had started to receive some training and education.

This took place the morning after he was moved to his own room.

He was woken up by an alarm, and an angry drill instructor burst through the door, barking orders for him to follow in line.

He obeyed the instruction and fell in line with the other children who were already present.

They were then led to a classroom, where they began to learn High Gothic.

They were also taught how to read and count.

He was taken aback by the fact that the whole class, including him, had only needed a week to learn to read and speak High Gothic.

He could feel the change in himself, and knew that his intellectual capacity had improved greatly.

After a week had passed, the lessons stopped and physical training began.

They would start at eight in the morning with two hours of streching exercices and it was anything but relaxing.

It resembled a class of hot tonic yoga, except with the intensity turned up to eleven. As the room heated up, it became increasingly challenging.

They were combining stretches with muscle-strengthening exercises, holding various positions for certain amounts of time, and doing push-ups and sit-ups.

They pushed everyone to their limits every day, screaming at anyone who did not give their all at any time.

Anyone who gave up received immediate corporal punishment.

If they kept giving up over multiple days, they would simply disappear, never to be seen again.

After that, they would be allowed a brief rest of fifteen minutes before being made to run for an hour and do various cardio exercises for another.

Finally, at midday, came a thirty-minute lunch break.

This was their only chance to socialise and enjoy some freedom, as it was the only time they were allowed to talk to each other.

As soon as the time for the break was over, training resumed.

The next six hours were dedicated to a multitude of cognitive exercices.

These included training reflexes, memory games, pattern recognition, puzzles in two or three dimensions, hand-eye coordination and exercises to train the senses, among many others.

For those six hours, they dedicated themselves entirely to using and training their brains.

By the end of it, your head would feel like mush and you would be unable to think straight.

Unfortunately, the day was not over.

For the next two hours, you would be placed in a machine that would encompass you completely.

You would then be stretched, bent and pulled to the absolute limit until your muscles and tendons tore and ripped uncarring for the pain it caused.

Unable to move any more, they will place your body in the same isolating casket that they have always used and take you to the laboratory, placing you in the familiar-looking container of liquid.

As always, you will be injected with an unknown substance and lose consciousness, as has happened every time before.

By the time you open your eyes, it will be morning and your body will have been miraculously healed, ready for another day of blissful torture.

Rinse and repeat.

It was a brutal regime, one that children of that age should not have been able to follow. Nevertheless, they did. Not only him, but very few of those present with him failed to do so.

He never forgot to train his psychic power at every opportunity he got, too.

As the months passed, he made progress in every area.

Using his telepathic powers, he could now clearly hear the thoughts of those around him within a twenty-metre radius.

He had also had some success with mind control, having succeeded in implanting mild suggestions into the minds of others.

With his telekinesis, he could almost levitate himself, and it wouldn't be long before he did.

His biomancy had made his physic in a category beyond his peer even though he never showed it.

His control over his body had improved so much that he could now generate and emit electricity or use it to accelerate his thoughts and imrprouve his nervous system.

His senses became more acute and his regenerative powers were enhanced.

This routine intrigued him, though.

The exercises were varied, but the programme remained the same day after day.

They were never taught how to fight or any other military discipline. In fact, they didn't teach them anything at all, just constant physical and cognitive training.

This resulted in no dropouts and everyone succeeding in following along and that was what bothered him about it.

When he thought about what they were doing and the possible reasons behind it, he came up with a few ideas.

Given how much they had focused on building their physical strength and mental ability through extensive training, it seemed that whatever came next in their trials would require them to have extremely high levels of both.

He could establish a correlation between the length of their preparation period and the difficulty of their next trial.

It was strange how much focus they put on flexibility. By now, everyone was as relaxed as a contortionist.

The point of it escaped him. He thought they would have emphasised strength or durability more, but they didn't. While they still trained endurance and strength, it seemed not as important as he had thought.

Either way with how things were unfolding he felt confident in passing through the future trials that awaited him.

He remained focused and alert, reminding himself to stay sharp and determined throughout the dull, never-ending training routine.

Boredom would quickly set in for anyone, and I witnessed this during my lunch break when the children complained about everything, as children do, but specifically about the lack of variety in their days.

However, they were powerless to do anything about it. Days turned into months, which turned into years, and before they knew it, six years had passed.

He had now reached the age of ten and was on the cusp of adolescence.
