Chapter 214: The "Price" of Awakening a Stand
It's no wonder Yukinoshita Yukino would misunderstand. Yotsuya Miko is indeed a cute girl, the type who could easily be approached by strangers at any time.
Yukinoshita Yukino initially thought that what Shin meant by "solving the problem" was helping Yotsuya Miko adjust her mental state, but now it seemed that wasn't the case at all.
Just as Yukinoshita Yukino was wondering if Shin had some other intentions toward Yotsuya Miko, the latter spoke up:
"It's alright, Yukinoshita-san. I believe Shin can help me with my problem."
That's right. After seeing the "Black Bird" behind Shin, she realized that the person who had been dealing with the evil spirits at school must have been him.
Although she initially mistook the figure behind Shin for some kind of evil spirit, it now seemed that this "spirit" was clearly under Shin's control.
Finally meeting someone who might be able to solve her problem, Yotsuya Miko was naturally overjoyed, so she unconditionally accepted Shin's request.
"This..."
Seeing Yotsuya Miko's expression as if she had found a savior, Yukinoshita Yukino felt a bit troubled.
She had thought it might be some kind of psychological counseling, but now it seemed like the situation had taken a completely different turn.
However, since Yotsuya Miko had no objections, Yukinoshita Yukino didn't seem to have any grounds to interfere. So, she sighed and said:
"Alright, I still trust Shin... but I hope you'll let me know the outcome afterward. After all, Yotsuya-san did come to the Service Club for help, so I need to confirm the final result."
...
After leaving the Service Club room, Shin took Yotsuya Miko to the rooftop.
There was no other choice. After school, almost every classroom was occupied by students with nothing better to do, so it was hard to find an empty room at the moment.
Therefore, just like with Eriri before, when he couldn't find a free classroom, he thought of the rooftop.
After all, he had been going to the rooftop during lunch breaks for the past few days, so going there again after school shouldn't be a problem.
And so, Shin and Yotsuya Miko entered the rooftop—Shin even locked the door to prevent anyone from accidentally walking in.
"Shin, were you the one who dealt with the evil spirits at school?"
Seeing Shin lock the door, Yotsuya Miko's heart raced a bit, but she quickly asked the question she had been wanting to know.
"If by evil spirits you mean those things that keep asking me if I can see them, then yes, I was the one who dealt with them."
Shin nodded. He had already guessed why Yotsuya Miko had come to him.
Honestly, if an evil spirit had appeared right then to back him up, it would have been more convincing to have the "Black Bird" tear one apart on the spot.
Unfortunately, all the evil spirits at school had already been cleaned up by Shin.
But Yotsuya Miko didn't seem to mind that. Seeing Shin admit to it, her eyes sparkled with hope:
"Well... the truth is, I'm currently being troubled by evil spirits..."
...
After pouring out her troubles, Yotsuya Miko finally told Shin everything she had been through recently.
Just like what Shin had seen in the story before he crossed over, Yotsuya Miko had suddenly gained the ability to see evil spirits some time ago, and they kept asking her if she could see them.
Although she didn't know how these spirits harmed people, she could tell from their words that if she answered "I can see you," the outcome wouldn't be good.
So, she had been pretending not to see the spirits, even when they were right in front of her, forcing herself to act as if nothing was wrong.
This state of affairs had gone on for a while, and she felt like she was on the verge of a mental breakdown.
It wasn't until recently, when she noticed that all the evil spirits at school had disappeared, that she finally felt a glimmer of hope. In the end, she found Shin through Yukinoshita Yukino.
"So, Shin, do you have any way to solve my problem?"
Yotsuya Miko sat on the bench, and as she spoke, she couldn't help but grab Shin's arms, asking nervously.
"Please, help me solve this problem. Even if it's just making me unable to see those spirits, I'll do anything!"
That kind of statement could easily be misinterpreted.
"Making you unable to see the spirits might be a bit difficult... but if it's just solving the problem of you being unable to deal with them, that's quite simple."
Shin looked at Yotsuya Miko, then raised his hand and pointed at the "Black Bird" beside him with his thumb.
"You can see this figure beside me, right?"
"...Yes, what is that? Is it some kind of evil spirit too?"
Yotsuya Miko hesitated for a moment, then nodded—she had seen it the moment Shin summoned the "Black Bird" in the Service Club.
But she had been tactful enough not to ask about it until now, when Shin seemed ready to explain it to her.
Perhaps she had become overly cautious due to her encounters with evil spirits, as even her tone when mentioning the "Black Bird" was careful.
"This is called a 'Stand.' My Stand is called 'Black Bird.' As you can see, it's a manifestation of the mind and soul, so it can attack evil spirits."
As Shin spoke, the "Black Bird" released the hand it had been pressing against Shin's chest—the "arrow" shot out from Shin's collar like a wild dog, aiming straight for Yotsuya Miko's forehead.
But Shin caught it in time—while awakening a Stand required the "arrow," stabbing someone in the forehead was a bit too extreme.
"This... what is this?"
Startled by the sudden appearance of the arrow from Shin's collar, Yotsuya Miko nearly fell off the bench.
But seeing that the arrow had been caught by the "Black Bird" in time, she couldn't help but ask curiously.
"This 'arrow' can awaken a Stand in you, making you a Stand user."
Shin smiled as he looked at Yotsuya Miko. He was quite curious about what kind of ability Yotsuya Miko, with her high Stand potential, would develop if she awakened a Stand.
However, awakening a Stand came with a price—after all, Shin and Yotsuya Miko weren't particularly close; they were just classmates.
Shin was indeed curious about Yotsuya Miko's Stand potential, but he still had to go through the proper procedures:
"Miko, with your Stand potential, the Stand you awaken should be quite powerful, and it will give you the ability to deal with evil spirits on your own... but in exchange, your life from now on will belong to me."
Shin wasn't going to help someone awaken a Stand for free, just because they were a cute girl—just like with Hayasaka Ai, if someone awakened a Stand, they had to be prepared to be under Shin's control.
He had no intention of starting some kind of spiritual revival or creating a world full of Stand users—the Stand users of this world would, of course, all be under his control.
