Chapter 22: Chapter 22: Whoever comes, Dies...
Inside the Root base
Danzō's face was grim as he stared at the retreating backs of Hiruzen Sarutobi and the Anbu.
Only after they disappeared from sight did his emotions erupt.
"Bastard!!!"
All the research data on Wood Release and the Sharingan had been extorted by that damned monkey.
He had even been forced to hand over the last two three‑tomoe Sharingan he hadn't yet transplanted.
Those eyes had been painstakingly gathered, in secret, by Root during the Third Great Ninja War.
Now one Sharingan had already been wasted by Uchiha Chizumi—
—and two more had been wrung from him by that cursed monkey!
That was the "satisfactory explanation" the monkey demanded.
And before leaving, Hiruzen had given Danzō a warning—no, a threat:
"Danzō, don't let anything like this happen again. I tolerated you once because you truly have contributed much to Konoha. There won't be a second time. If it does happen again, you can step down as head of Root."
Remembering those words, Danzō clenched his fists.
"This Root is something I raised with my own blood and sweat—how dare that monkey threaten my position!"
Gritting his teeth, he spat out each word:
"Damn monkey! And that naturally evil Uchiha brat!"
Just then a Root intelligence officer rushed in and reported:
"Danzo-sama, the Nine‑Tails jinchūriki, Uzumaki Naruto, has been taken to the Police Force building by Uchiha Chizumi! They say it happened with the tacit approval of the Third Hokage."
Danzō: "???"
…
At the Uchiha compound
"Chizumi dragged that demon‑fox kid to the Police Force building?"
An Uchiha shinobi's eyes lit up, excitement flickering within them.
"This is a once‑in‑a‑lifetime chance! They say the Nine‑Tails from back then is sealed inside that brat—he's the jinchūriki!"
"If we could control that power, which of those old fossils in the village would still dare talk down to the Uchiha?"
He went on eagerly, "Who'd have thought? Chizumi always seems out of place, even quarrels with his own clansmen… yet at a crucial moment he's dependable!"
That Naruto was probably the Nine‑Tails jinchūriki—a "secret" that seemed known only to the top brass.
But no one was a fool. Rumors had long spread that the kid was the demon fox incarnate, a harbinger of disaster.
Rumors rarely arise for no reason; anyone who thought about it could see the link between him and the Nine‑Tails.
Another Uchiha nearby frowned and sneered:
"I hear Naruto's in Fugaku-sama's office. Knowing Fugaku… heh, do you think he'll let us use the jinchūriki to cow the higher‑ups?"
"That's Fugaku the 'Wicked Eye Guardian of the Bigger Picture'!"
A third Uchiha growled, "Hmph! Fugaku-sama is too indecisive. But if we gather enough clansmen and put pressure on him, could he really refuse?"
"With the fox's power, we could advance our coup schedule."
"We should ask Elder Setsuna to step in!"
…
Over twenty Uchiha shinobi had gathered—every one of them a hard‑line hawk.
They all rallied around Uchiha Setsuna, a hawkish elder once jailed by the Second Hokage for planning a coup and only released in recent years.
But these younger hawks were already a step behind.
Setsuna and several elder hawks were already heading straight for the Police Force building!
…
On a street in the Uchiha district
"Uchiha Chizumi, what is the meaning of this?!"
Uchiha Setsuna—about the same age as Hiruzen—leaned on a cane, glaring at Chizumi blocking the road.
"Ch‑Chizumi‑senpai, you—?" Izumi, who had followed Chizumi, stared in disbelief.
Chizumi had drawn the ninja sword from Izumi's waist and now stood silently, blade in hand, in the middle of the street.
The air turned razor‑sharp.
The guards with the hawk elders stepped forward; a standoff formed.
Ignoring Setsuna's question, Chizumi spoke calmly to Izumi:
"Rookie—if evil clashes with evil, and both sides may wound or even destroy each other…"
"But that clash will spill over onto many who never should have been involved. Tell me: should Absolute Justice stand by and watch, or intervene?"
Izumi froze.
After thinking hard, twisting a lock of hair, she ventured, "Senpai, that's… awfully deep. But I don't think Absolute Justice should be that cold‑hearted."
Mustering courage, she added, "If it were up to me—I'd intervene."
Wait…
Senpai wouldn't ask for no reason. And given what he's doing—
G‑gulp!
Does he see these aged Uchiha elders as one evil? Then who's the other? Fugaku-sama? The Hokage?
Izumi swallowed.
"Rookie, you're only half right," Chizumi said quietly. "Absolute Justice knows no mercy; to enforce it one must be utterly ruthless. We intervene because Absolute Justice forbids any evil from strutting before our eyes."
"Even if letting evil fight evil would advantage justice, allowing evil to act unchecked is already a betrayal of Absolute Justice."
"Never indulge one evil, hoping it will destroy another. One misstep—if they don't annihilate each other—"
"—and one evil will swell until even Absolute Justice cannot suppress it."
The hawks' coup plan itself wasn't "evil" to Chizumi—only a plan.
But their reckless, justice‑trampling, twisted methods—
Those were evil in his eyes.
He knew this all too well—because of the red‑and‑white boxes only he could see.
Evil was displayed there in stark clarity.
Finally he acknowledged the storm‑faced Setsuna—
—and the words he spoke made Setsuna's fury surge:
"This road is closed."
"Whoever comes, dies."
