Chapter 17: Encounter a human trafficker on the road
Wutong Yaju was a teahouse. The moment Su Qingli stepped out of the door, she secretly breathed a sigh of relief. Although Lu Han's hand still rested on her waist, compared to being alone with him in the room earlier, the situation felt much less threatening.
In fact, Su Qingli had been on edge the whole time, fearing that the man might make any aggressive moves like forcefully kissing or groping her. For the sake of her family, she might have half-heartedly allowed him to succeed.
Fortunately, Lu Han remained a gentleman, aside from his hand occasionally wandering over her waist, he didn't lose control.
"Lu Han, where are you going? I'll drive you," Su Qingli offered when they reached the parking lot. However, after waiting for several seconds without hearing a response, she looked up curiously and saw Lu Han staring grimly across the street.
Following his gaze, Su Qingli saw a woman begging with a child. In the biting autumn wind, the woman wore only a thin layer of clothing. The child in her arms looked even worse, likely a girl around one or two years old, with large areas of skin exposed and numerous burn scars on her shoulders and back.
Many passersby stopped to give alms upon seeing this pitiful mother and daughter. Su Qingli's compassion welled up, and she fished out several hundred-yuan bills from her bag to approach them. But just as she took her first step, Lu Han pulled her back.
Meeting her puzzled gaze, he said sternly, "Don't go. That mother and daughter are suspicious."
Su Qingli was taken aback and asked, "Why do you say that?"
Lu Han lit a cigarette and said with a hint of sarcasm, "How about we make a bet?"
"Lu Han, can't you show some sympathy?" Su Qingli glared at him, disappointment clear in her eyes. "Those poor mother and daughter came out to beg in such cold weather, and you still have the heart to make a bet about them?"
"That's too much!"
She turned away angrily, striding across the road in her high heels. Su Qingli immediately noticed the white cloth in front of the mother and daughter, filled with messy handwriting explaining how the child was accidentally scalded due to neglect and needed a large sum for skin graft surgery.
At that moment, the little girl started crying loudly, making everyone feel even more sympathetic. Tears welled up in Su Qingli's eyes as she placed the money in their donation box without hesitation.
"Thank you, may good fortune be with you," the mother quickly thanked her.
"No need for thanks, but I have a question," interrupted a slightly mocking voice. Lu Han had arrived by Su Qingli's side, looking down at the woman and asking coldly, "Are you really this child's mother?"
The woman's eyes flashed with panic as she patted the child and said irritably, "What do you mean? If not me, then who, you?"
"Lu Han, what exactly are you doing!" Su Qingli exclaimed. "If it weren't for desperation, which mother would bring her child out to beg? You don't sympathize with them, but why must you deliberately provoke them? Are you that idle?"
As she finished speaking, people around began whispering among themselves, expressing agreement.
"Yeah, what's wrong with this man? Those mother and daughter are already so pitiful, and he still says such things."
"Look at him, dressed up and obviously wealthy, probably bored and taking advantage of the poor!"
"Rich but unkind, he should die..."
Lu Han ignored the harsh comments around him. He calmly looked at the angry Su Qingli and said, "Having compassion is good, but if you don't distinguish right from wrong, it becomes aiding evil."
He then turned his cold gaze back to the seemingly pitiful woman. Having been kidnapped himself and spending a long time with human traffickers, Lu Han was certain that this woman was definitely a trafficker.
Unfortunately, this wasn't abroad where he could take action freely. In China, one couldn't just kill someone arbitrarily.
Otherwise, she would be a cold corpse tonight.
At that moment, a police car stopped by the roadside. Two officers got out and approached the begging mother and daughter. As they hastily gathered their belongings and tried to leave with the child, Lu Han blocked their way.
The leading officer, around forty years old, surveyed the scene and asked, "Who called the police?"
"I did," Lu Han smiled. "You responded very quickly; I thought it would take longer."
"Oh, we were nearby and immediately came after receiving the dispatch."
The officer looked at the begging mother and daughter and frowned slightly, "You suspect she's a human trafficker, intentionally scalding the child to exploit people's sympathy?"
"Officer, no, I'm not a trafficker," the woman waved her hands frantically. "I'm the child's mother."
"We'll know after checking. Please come with us," the officer pointed to the police car. Though visibly reluctant, the woman eventually got in.
"You also need to come with us for a statement," the officer turned to Lu Han.
Lu Han nodded and glanced deeply at someone hiding in the crowd, who instinctively turned away. After Lu Han got into the police car, Su Qingli realized what was happening.
After asking the police station's location, she hurried back to the parking lot and sped off in her pink Lamborghini.
When Su Qingli arrived at the police station, she didn't see Lu Han. A policewoman in her forties received her and said Lu Han was inside giving a statement.
After about ten minutes, the policewoman returned, clearly furious.
"These human traffickers are truly despicable!" she gritted her teeth. "Not only stealing children but also scalding them so badly, how could anyone do that? They're not human!"
Su Qingli was stunned and asked, "That woman... was she really a trafficker?"
"Yes, exploiting people's sympathy to scam money!" the policewoman sighed heavily. "Luckily, your boyfriend recognized she wasn't the child's mother. Otherwise, who knows how many people she'd have deceived."
"She might have harmed countless children. My colleague said she could be a repeat offender..."
Su Qingli tuned out the rest of the rant, realizing she had misjudged Lu Han.
About half an hour later, Lu Han was personally escorted out of the station by the chief.
"Really, thank you. Without your timely report, we wouldn't have obtained such crucial information," the chief patted Lu Han's shoulder. "Based on her confession, this is a large-scale human trafficking operation. We've reported to the city bureau, and a special task force will be formed soon. Also, I've applied for a reward for you."
"The reward isn't important," Lu Han said seriously. "I only hope the police can swiftly apprehend all suspects. Every day they remain at large, another child might be stolen or harmed."
Hearing this, the surrounding officers looked even more solemn. Among all types of criminals in China, human traffickers were perhaps the most despised by law enforcement.
Leaving the police station, Lu Han sighed lightly. In the past, dealing with traffickers meant swift justice, but now he felt constrained, having to rely on reporting to solve problems.
It was indeed frustrating.
Then, Su Qingli couldn't help but ask behind him, "Lu Han, how did you realize she was a trafficker?"
