After Surviving the Apocalypse, I Built a City in Another World

Chapter 1277: Blocked!

For the next hour or so, the state of the Basset Town forces would be either one of three things.

In the areas near the arrays, the Basset Town powerhouses near the array had to focus on clearing out the powerful beast mobs that suddenly appeared. Some of them were already inside beasts' stomachs.

Next, there were dozens of them who continued to fall down the gorge and get flushed away. Because the forces were so dense, some people inevitably got pushed into the water-filled gorge, and they could only count themselves lucky or unlucky.

Lastly, and the largest one, was battle at the front line. They were still in the tens of thousands, but every and each one of them had a certain degree of injuries in their bodies.

However, because their numbers and overall strength were great, they still held strong, continuously pushing towards the walls.

Alterra had a radius of approximately 3 kilometers and this meant that it—excluding the sentries— had over 18 thousand meters of wall to guard.

Considering not everyone in their population could directly fight in a war of this level and that there were people who still needed to guard the easements, make rounds, and hunt for leaks—this meant that there was a limited number of people who could stand on the battlements and keep the enemies from coming in.

Fortunately, there were actually hundreds of people past level 20 and several dozen people were past level 30 in Alterra.

Excluding the Golds and the soldiers, there were also mercenaries like Enok who were hungry for the contribution points.

Each one or pair was separated and set to guard certain areas of the walls and had been doing a good job so far. After nearly two hours of the war, there had only been a handful of leaks—most of which had been promptly handled.

There were three ways the Basset Town mob attempted to enter the territory.

First was jumping over the siege shields, second was using the earth users' platforms, and then there were also the classic ladders.

The siege shields were the most obvious ones and were relatively predictable.

The advantage was that they had prepared a lot of them and they could double as shields so, if Alterra didn't have powerhouses guarding so many parts of the wall, a lot more people would have already gotten through using them.

As for the earth users' platforms, they were quite sturdy. Baison was a civil engineer and he designed earth platforms that'd take a bit more mana for others to dismantle.

They could also be detracted and retracted—he was given quite a few mana potions—and could be easily moved wherever the strongmen were not.

The most flexible ones were, of course, the ladders.

In all strongmen's spaces, there were at least 2 retractable staircases, prepared by the Terran engineers in Basset Town.

When contracted, it wouldn't take too much space, leaving the rest of the space for essentials. However, once it was pulled out, it would extend several meters and was more than enough to assist their side in climbing over the unsalable 5-meter walls.

One end had a hook to attach it to the battlements, and its base had spikes that'd embed on the ground to keep it stable. Even if the earth elementalists added bumps, it might not be affected.

It would also extend horizontally so 3 people could enter at the same time, further stabilizing it due to the added weight.

Speaking of Fargo, he was now in an awkward position of being suspected!

He contributed so much to this war, but those shallow-minded aborigines didn't know to respect him just because his level was lower! They were even questioning his loyalty now after a few words from the enemy!

He had vowed to take them all down under his feet when he grew powerful enough!

This was also another reason why winning this war was especially important. More than his revenge—this was his massive step up to regain a standing in this world!

These ladders would be guarded by the strong men incharge of it. They were all past level 30 and, along with equipment, they could handle the sentries and arrows coming their way.

The mysterious powerhouses were a problem, but they made sure to set up where there were fewer of those people, and they had seen some success.

There were scores of these stairs, heading to different spots in the territory. Basset was far superior in sheer number and average level, so it was inevitable that—after so many spots were targeted—some teams were indeed able to go through.

For instance, in an area West of the territory, a few ladders were set up while a team dealt with the guards there. There were also those nearby who knew to target the ladders first. For example, Beanie.

"Help me!" Beanie yelled, taking something thin and hard in his space (he happened to have a baking pan there, which was a long story) and placed it under the hook.

He gasped when he barely avoided an intruder's attack, which was possible because a teammate appeared to kick him away. Beanie calmed down his nervous, palpitating heart and proceeded to pull the bottom of the tray, prying the hook off the wall, though only by a millimeter.

The teammate kneeled down to help him while the others defended them, kicking the people climbing up as quickly as they could. There were still a lot more heading up and the people from the battlement had to take on one or two enemies at a time.

Unexpectedly, a level 34—the highest leveled one yet in this area—easily jumped over the wall and appeared in front of them. Beanie was nearest him and—BANG—was met with the strongman's strong attack.

"AH!" he screamed, feeling his body flying, stopping only when he hit the sentry wall.

The Protection Charm activated, and the man raised his arms and the atmosphere felt like he was using a skill!

It happened so quickly. A moment later, the others were kicked down as well, and he hoped their protection charms were still working.

They had a few level 20s in this area, too, but they seemed preoccupied by a group of several-leveled men nearby, so Beanie could not call on them.

He paled as the enemy appeared in front of him, and he attacked him a few more times, consuming all the protection charms he had left!

"Another charm? How many do you have?" the man asked, sounding a little irksome as he grabbed Beanie's face with one hand.

Beanie lost his voice as he felt the crushing pain in his head. He no longer had a charm, and the next attack would definitely be fatal.

The other teammates gasped and tried to go to his rescue, but they had to defend against the enemies, too.

"Time to get rid of you now," the man said, carrying his entire weight and even holding him out of the easements. "You annoyed me with all those tools—"

Crack—

Unexpectedly, a figure appeared in front of him, and held his arm. A little squeeze and the level 30 man had to let go of Beanie, who gasped for air as he was pulled back, and now laying down in the battlement.

It didn't seem like it was a strong force, but it was shocking. "Who—" the next thing he knew, he was flying a few hundred meters back of the line!

The newcomer was none other than Gregory, and he just swatted the level 30 away like a bug!
