Chapter 1460: The Current Military (Part 1)
While the various Research projects were progressing nonstop, the territory's Military Might definitely did not fall behind.
There were now more than 3000 guards in the territory, with a very high ratio of 30 normal citizens to every guard. They did not have slaves after all, so their ratio was a bit more stringent than others.
This was not even considering that the majority of the residents could willingly be 'conscripted' the moment they were needed.
To compare, according to their data, the average Towns had a ratio of 1:100 to 1:150. Someone who studied Terran history even said that the Ancient Grome empire had 1:100 ratios, and the typical medieval fiefs had slightly lower ratios at 1:150 to 1:300.
Of course, unlike those civilizations, Xenoans were not only prone to continuous wars, but they had to go against nature and beast mobs, too, so it was understandable they had more fighters.
Anyway, all of these guards were systematically trained, particularly to the specializations they seemed to excel at. There was also a more intricate assignment system, which would still rotate quarterly for skill development, to make them more versatile and adaptable.
This world was so volatile, and their sentinels were the first line of defense and rescuers the territory had. They had to be prepared for whatever came their way.
It'd also improve the cohesion amongst the entire guard team because everyone would have worked with everyone before. As such, this would also improve an individual's team play because they'd be able to work with many kinds of people and be aware of many styles.
It would also prevent the formation of strict and exclusive cliques which could, in the long term, have negative effects on the overall unity of their military.
For now, they divided the guard team into 6 departments, which should be the usable arrangement until they become a City. One restructuring was enough, especially considering how fast Alterra actually upgrades.
First was the Operational Security Department, which would comprise more or less 30% of the whole team.
It would be divided between Patrol Units, who would do the regular 28-hour patrol of the territory, and the Stationary guards who were placed around the territory, including the gates as well as fixed places guarding the battlements.
They would also be in charge of the mobs that attacked the territory on a daily basis, and were responsible for keeping them out of the Town.
Anyway, with the number of sentries and the continuous clearing of mobs outside (as well as the passionate citizens looking for fight/loot), a single guard could cover several meters of battlement with little problem.
The team leaders here would be the ones to have the different colored flares and other alert mechanisms, making sure the swift passage of information in case of attacks and similar emergencies.
For those doing rounds, they would be the point person in case of chaos or emergencies happening within the Town itself.
The second was the Enemy Control Department, which would have at least 40% of the force.
Here, there would be the External Assault Teams who would be actively engaging and thinning out the monster population outside the walls.
This group was large because the monsters outside were endless. It was also better to thin them out now so their beast tides would be more manageable.
They'd also be the team that, as always, would take citizens hoping to train (for a fee). With the increase in monster levels as a new town, the fee also increased because they'd have to assign fewer citizens to each guard by virtue of the monsters being stronger.
A small part of this department would be assigned to the Support and Recovery Teams. They would be in charge of providing backup and ensuring the safe return of the Assault Teams.
They would have representatives in the Guard Station monitoring the aether letters, so they could be prepared to rescue as soon as they were alerted.
For example, the people outside were attacked by a bigger-than-usual mob or by enemies.
During wars, whoever was assigned in the Enemy Control Department would also be the vanguards. Of course, they were also the best equipped, receiving more potions and extra equipment than other people.
So, while scary, the guards generally didn't dread getting assigned here as much as one would think. According to the data, the people assigned here would witness much sharper growth than the others, after all.
Next would be the Intelligence Department, which would comprise of another 20% of the guards. Knowledge was power, after all, and their primary task was to reinforce this.
Here, there would be reconnaissance teams that would gather information about monster movements and potential threats. They would also be taking note of unusual flora and fauna they come across. A certain amount of Agility stat was required to be assigned to this sector.
The next subgroup was the Analysis and Communications Team which'd interpret intelligence and coordinate communications. They were mostly office-based during their tenure in this department.
Some would think it was a nice change of pace to be assigned here, while others dreaded it, thinking they would grow mold from sitting for too long. Of course, a certain amount of intelligence was required to be assigned to this sector.
People who'd be sent outside to spy would also be in this place. In contrast with the others, though, the rotations here would be much less, if any at all.
Speaking of this, Alterra had also sent people to the associate territories, some of whom were in the branches there, while some were a lot more subtle.
Alterra was given their own small plots of land in each one to build official branches on. This was a win-win situation because Alterran Guards there was a huge injection of force for that territory.
The next assignments would be places farther from them, like Twinwave Town, Bleuelle City, and Avel City. However, the assigned people here would require a lot more training. After all, the level of population and monsters there was not near what they were used to.
Well, the effects of these would be far into the future, but Alterra…had always looked forward to it.
