Chapter 1481: Letter Arrived!
Back in Voumi Town, Otto settled back in his room. He laid down on the bed in thought.
There should still be more than a thousand elementalist slaves in this place. However, most of them were probably settled in other jobs, like guards, and some were directly deposited next to local men as their playthings.
Among those who were privy to the plan, on the other hand, there was only one person left—that woman next to Hesso.
The thought of the woman made his eyes sparkle in interest. Silvia had mentioned that she was the main person helping their side out, and they also told him of her power and limitations.
The wood power variation, and she was limited to emanating certain scents and capable of affecting judgment of anyone whose level wasn't far from hers—especially if they were weak-minded.
In that case, it was natural for her to choose the brainless Hesso. The current Lord was not only much higher in level, but he was also a bit sharper than the spoiled Hesso, not to mention Mafo's level, which was far superior to hers.
Terrans had the most interesting variations in their ranks. Then again, it could be because of the large number of elementalists, the number of odd mutations was also higher. Either way, it was fun to see things he had taken for granted turn over his head.
And more, he was interested when abilities were maximized by the individual. If it were someone weaker or someone with a bad heart who had this power, it could either be wasted or used on innocents.
This was actually the more likely case, so the fact that that woman had managed to escape the fate of the women here and help save a thousand people was very impressive.
Not to mention the impressive control of her ability, it spoke of her mind.
Otto stood up and sat on the side of the bed.
Now… what to do with the rest of the unfortunate slaves?
…
The next day, during a meeting, one of Mafo's servants ran to him. In his hand, was finally the letter they had been waiting for.
"A letter addressed to that guy Enok had arrived!"
"Oh?" he asked, extending his hand to get it. It was a copy of course, because the original posts could not be taken out by anyone other than the addressee themselves.
The Lord had access to the Post Office and he assigned handling it to some literate slaves he—or rather, the previous lord—got from previous wars with another town.
Of course, even if it was common practice for Lords to intercept letters, they were rarely so blatant about it—especially when the other person was someone of an unknown or a higher background.
Usually, Mafo wouldn't really care to reveal otherwise. For instance, if he decided to intercept, then he'd open up the envelope and break the seal without care for the recipient knowing it had been read by someone else. This time though, he was a bit more careful.
Posts were usually from papyrus, which was folded a few times. Its end was secured by colored wax with the seal of the sender. However, he saw the sender's location and he paused, suddenly not daring to open it.
It was from Warrior City!
The land of the greatest human fighters!
That made sense. Enok claimed that he was from the East and was having wars with the orcs there, making him desperate for elementalists.
Elementalists were extremely powerful beings who, once trained well, could surpass superior weapons and could go head-to-head against 'stronger' species like orcs.
Regardless, this meant he could not be too arrogant!
"Summon Enok here!" he said. "Tell him the letter has arrived, and the Lord hopes to see the response of his master."
The servants nodded, though the person beside him—one assigned to keep tabs on people of interest—stepped forward. "Sir Enok is with Master Hassen at this time."
Mafo narrowed his eyes. The lad had been doing a lot the past few days…
According to reports, "Enok" had been asking around for information about Hesso. When Mafo sent someone to pry, it seemed like the foreigner had become close with Hesso because he was interested in Hesso's lineage.
That Enok apparently added emphasis on the word "lineage".
Frankly, it caught Mafo off guard, wondering what the man knew.
In public, that lineage was the previous Lord's.
But regardless of what they knew, why would it matter to such a big city?
A bad feeling was dawning on him. Was Warrior City looking for a new subsidiary so far away from them?
It so happened that Voumi Town was not associated with a City. Did those people want to kick him off and put Hesso on the throne?
Hesso was definitely much easier to control than him.
That brat. If he dared to have rebellious thoughts—
That said, if he could secure the deal from his end, then he could also secure his position. If they really did get into a war with Valov Town or its subsidiary—a rumor that had been gaining traction—then they would definitely be in trouble. This could be his chance.
Anyway, they hadn't received a complaint from "Enok" about the slaves he bought yet. Perhaps they had really found a use for them!
Or perhaps…a cure? Or was that illness even as serious as they thought?
His eyes twitched at a thought. However, the rest of the slaves were unaffected because they lived in a separate dormitory from the rest of the slaves. How was he to know what really happened?
Anyway, his thoughts were all over the place (as they always were now that there were problems after problems greeting him every day), and soon the messengers told him that "Enok" would be arriving soon.
Mafo better clear things with him. They better not be eyeing that lad, at least not without his permission! He would remain in position for as long as he wanted and felt like it.
At the same time, it wouldn't be much of a loss to him either, though he'd need to reveal it soon lest things backfire on him.
After all, Hesso was not the previous' Lord's son—he was his, Lord Mafo's, offspring!
