Chapter 4: NAMES AND SECRETS
Andaya wanted to know their names, respective companies, and specialties. While walking with the trainees, he said:
Andaya: "State your name, your company, and your specialty."
Ramel: "Ahh… I'm Ramel Mabati, sir. Trainee of the 3rd Company. My specialty is false tracking, sir."
Andaya: "So, you have a surname, And you're still a trainee? You have a bright future—just don't let it get to your head."
Ramel: "Yes, sir."
Elayna: "Elayna of the 7th Company, sir. I don't have a surname yet. My specialty is close combat, using daggers and knives."
Andaya looked at the person with a hoodie slightly taller than him.
Andaya: "How about you? The guy with the hoodie."
Jake: "Jake. Just Jake. Also from the 7th Company. Same specialty as Elayna—I'm good with knives, but I can also scout."
Andaya: "How about the last three?"
Danilo: "Danilo, sir. From the 3rd Company. I don't have a surname, but I want to earn one someday. My specialty is ambushing enemies."
Venus: "Venus Hiraya, 7th Company. I'm a Panggulo."
Andaya: "A healer and an illusionist, huh?"
"Andaya remembered what Lea said earlier—that she was in charge of training a Panggulo. He thought to himself that something wasn't right, that they were planning something. But Andaya told himself he would deal with it later."
Adrian: "Adrian of the 3rd Company, sir. My specialty is being all-around. Don't get me wrong, sir—I can't heal anyone supernaturally or use any special powers. I'm just a guy who knows a lot of things, and my combat skills are average."
Andaya: "Don't worry. I understand. You guys were put under my command because your companies' Patos are confident you can handle this mission."
Andaya turned to introduce himself and brief them on what to expect from the mission. Even though they were still trainees, the mission itself required at least two Panabla to complete. That's why Andaya wanted them to push beyond their limits to survive this mission.
Andaya: "My name is Andaya Bonifacio, Tangan (2nd in command) of the 5th Company of Agimatayo. We are deployed here to investigate the murder of a pregnant woman. We also need to find out where their nest is. So, if you manage to corner an Aswang, don't kill it immediately—cut off their limbs. They can regenerate, but not quickly, and the pain will be unbearable. Once we get the information out of that monster, feel free to cut off their head or pierce their heart."
Ramel: "What do you mean by that, sir? Are you saying we're going to fight them in their own territory?"
Andaya: "Nope. We need to do it discreetly to rescue the child of that woman, obviously. We get in, grab the infant, and get the hell out before they start to notice it. Simple, right?"
Ramel: "What makes you so sure the infant is still alive and hasn't been eaten?"
Andaya: "Because they waited for the infant to fully develop for nine months before killing the mother. It's more likely that they want to increase their numbers through the possession method—and we can't let them do that."
Elayna: "Why can't they create offspring on their own?"
Andaya: "Actually, they can. But Aswang are mostly considered corrupted beings. The problem is that when someone is born with two Aswang as parents, the result is not a cute baby Aswang—it's an empty shell without a soul. I've already seen it with my own eyes."
Adrian: "Why is that?"
Andaya glanced at Adrian and thought to himself,
"Why don't they know about this? Is it because both companies are in charge of fighting Engkanto and not Aswang? Is that why they were placed under me? I'll have to ask Lea about it after this mission."
Andaya revealed the truth of why they can't increase their numbers naturally.
Andaya: "Because all human babies are born with an innocent soul. That's why if two corrupted beings (Aswang) try to have a child, no innocent soul will possess it."
