Chapter 10
#10. The Black Death (5)
‘So this is the royal palace of Jigu.’
As the story progressed, various nations were introduced, but the most detailed description of a royal palace was that of Jigu.
It was only natural.
After all, the main heroine, Liliana, was the first princess of Jigu.
‘She must be about 15 years old now, right?’
In the original work, she was a character with quite an impact, but I was curious about what she would be like now, still just a kid.
Well, anyway.
“His Majesty the King has personally granted you an audience. Consider it an honor.”
I should treat the queen first.
I simply smiled at the royal knight, who was acting high and mighty.
It wasn’t a fake smile.
In the first place, the whole reason I had been traveling from village to village in my saintess act was to meet the queen.
Now that my goal was right before my eyes, wasn’t it only natural to feel pleased?
“This way.”
I nodded and tapped my cane against the floor.
Tap, tap.
After pretending to hesitate a few times, I followed the carpet straight ahead.
“Are you the blind girl?”
A serious-looking king came into view.
Golden hair and red eyes.
The very symbols of Jigu’s royal family. I lowered my head as I looked at the much younger king compared to how he appeared in the manhwa.
“Yes, I am.”
On either side of him, Jigu’s nobles were lined up. They glanced at my eyes and attire before soon murmuring with clear discontent.
“Is this alright?”
“Can someone with poor eyesight have properly learned medicine?”
“Tsk. But hey, what’s there to lose? The royal physicians have already given up, after all…”
Oh dear. It seemed they had little faith in me.
‘More importantly, hasn’t word about the saintess spread?’
Though, to be fair, I wasn’t a doctor.
“Silence, all of you!”
A thunderous voice soon echoed through the throne room. The king looked down at me with an overwhelming presence.
“As you must have already heard, the queen’s life is in grave danger. Not only have the royal physicians given up, but even the doctors summoned from our neighboring country have told us to prepare for the worst.”
His face was filled with anguish.
‘It’s only natural.’
Even in the original work, the King of Jigu was an extremely devoted husband. So much so that after the Queen’s death, he drowned himself in alcohol and completely abandoned his duties.
As a result, Jigu rapidly collapsed from within. Even now, illicit activities such as slave trading, tax evasion, and bribery are rampant.
To make matters worse, an agent of the Demon King, disguised as the Grand Chancellor, deliberately manipulated the First Prince, throwing the nation into utter chaos by the time the protagonist’s story unfolded.
But that history would soon disappear.
Because I was going to change it.
“Do whatever it takes to cure the Queen. If you succeed, I will grant you any wish, along with a financial reward.”
I smiled slightly at the desperate king.
“I don’t need any financial reward.”
And before he could say anything more, I quickly cut in.
“Then, may I see Her Majesty right away? The Black Death should be treated as quickly as possible.”
***
Honestly, I had wondered what could have possibly convinced them to bring in a blind commoner to treat the Queen.
But as soon as I saw her condition, I understood.
‘This is serious.’
Her entire skin was almost completely blackened and necrotic.
Every time she coughed, blood poured from her lips. The maids must have been changing the sheets constantly, yet the bed was still soaked in blood.
A chill ran down my spine.
‘If I had come even a day later, she really would have died.’
Even with my Complete Healing, I couldn’t bring the dead back to life. The fact that I had been summoned in time was a stroke of luck—not just for me, but for the entire kingdom.
“Do you need any materials?”
The King, seemingly unafraid of the disease, approached his unconscious wife and asked me.
His hand gently caressed the Queen’s cheek. At that touch, her closed eyes slowly opened.
“…Your Majesty.”
“Louise!”
He clasped her hand tightly and spoke with conviction.
“I have brought a girl who can cure the Black Death. Everything will be alright now.”
“A… girl?”
Her gaze shifted toward me.
The moment she saw my face, her pupils trembled.
“You look like just a child… and your eyes…”
“I greet Your Majesty, the Queen. My name is Justinas.”
I greeted her politely, and she asked with a slightly complex expression.
“How old are you?”
“Twelve years old.”
“You’re around the same age as our Liliana. It’s nice to meet you… cough!”
Even those few words seemed too much for her, as she erupted into another fit of bloody coughs.
If this continued, she really would die.
Without any further hesitation, I let go of my cane and took her hand.
“May the blessing of the divine be upon you.”
A now-familiar white light began to flow from my heart.
The sacred breath of the goddess (or so people called it) traveled through my hand and gently enveloped the queen.
“This… this is impossible!”
“How can such a thing…?”
Several physicians, maids, and even some nobles who had been holding their breath behind me gasped in shock.
A glance showed that the king, too, was staring at me with wide eyes, his mouth practically hanging open in disbelief.
Gulp.
At the same time, blood surged up from my lungs. Damn, this hurt.
“Oh my…”
As the white light faded, the queen—who had been on the brink of death just moments ago—had returned to a healthy and beautiful state.
Compared to before, it was as if she had been freed from a curse.
“A mirror… Please, bring me a mirror.”
At her request, the king hastily grabbed a hand mirror from nearby and handed it to her.
She gazed into the mirror in silence for a moment.
The blackened skin that had spread over her face, hands, and entire body was completely gone. The heavy aura of sickness had vanished without a trace.
“Doctor!”
The king quickly signaled to one of the physicians standing by.
“What is the queen’s condition?”
“Well…”
After examining her several times, the physician spoke with an expression of utter disbelief.
“The Black Death is completely gone. No… not only that, Her Majesty is even healthier than before.”
Tears streamed down her face.
“Thank you… truly, thank you.”
King Edwin was no different. His eyes, red with emotion, remained fixed on his wife as he checked on her again and again.
Then, he suddenly did something no one had expected.
“Your Majesty!”
“Why would you lower your head…?!”
He bowed deeply to me.
“I do not know how or why, but you have accomplished what even the best physicians could not. You must truly be blessed by the divine. As I promised, I will grant you any wish.”
“This was simply my duty. Besides, I can’t think of anything I want…”
As I spoke, my gaze shifted back to my status window.
[Edwin Asher Terrario feels deep gratitude toward you.]
[Good Deed Points +500]
[Louise Reina Terrario regards you as her savior.]
[Good Deed Points +1,000]
[Richard Raymond is impressed by you.]
[Good Deed Points +10]
[Lucas Renon is astonished by you.]
[Good Deed Points +15]
……
The status window continued endlessly, so much so that I couldn’t even bring myself to read it all.
So this is what it means to save the queen of a nation.
I believe that every life is equally valuable, but it’s true that the societal impact differs depending on who the person is.
[Good Deed Points: 152,431]
Seeing the massive accumulation of points filled me with warmth once again.
This is exactly why doing good deeds feels so rewarding!
