Chapter 7
#7 The Black Plague (2)
Upon learning about the condition of my eyes, Mars was initially skeptical. However, after my repeated insistence, he eventually picked me up and headed toward his house.
“Are you uncomfortable? There’s no need to worry.”
It seemed like I had been misunderstood, though I had no intention of correcting it.
‘Well, it’s obvious that my eyes aren’t normal.’
It wasn’t noticeable from afar, but up close, the abnormality was immediately apparent.
“Here we are.”
As the man had said, his house was quite close to the inn. After walking for about 30 minutes, he entered a small village near the harbor.
The place he headed toward was a modest wooden building, one of the more run-down houses in the village.
“Mars, is your body feeling better? Is it okay if I go in?”
After bringing me inside, he knocked on a door. Then, I could hear the sound of a young girl coughing inside.
“Amy!”
Mars startled, quickly opening the door and entering. Then, the layout of the room came into my view.
A small desk, a bed stained with exhaustion, and on it was a girl about my age, coughing painfully.
“Cough, cough! Ha…”
I quickly checked the girl’s condition with my eyes.
‘It’s worse than I thought.’
The skin on her knees and elbows had turned necrotic. She was young, so the disease was progressing quickly.
“Drink, slowly now. Good, you’re doing great.”
Mars was fussing over his daughter, helping her drink water. However, the girl would choke and start coughing again as if the water was going back up her throat.
“Amy!”
This time, her cough was mixed with blood.
It was a severe case of plague fever.
I hurriedly opened my status window.
[Complete Healing: 100,000p]
[Completely heals all physical damage, diseases, and status abnormalities of others. When healing, you temporarily experience the pain of the person being healed, and you cannot heal yourself.]
[Tip: A special profession can be acquired depending on proficiency.]
A 100,000-point skill.
It was an incredibly useful skill, one that I had long coveted.
‘The penalty is a bit of a bother, but…’
Still, with this skill, acting as a doctor would be a piece of cake.
I immediately purchased the “Complete Healing” skill.
[Purchase completed.]
[You have acquired “Complete Healing.”]
[Tip: Physical contact is recommended for effective healing.]
Alright, everything’s ready.
I walked past Mars and slowly approached the girl.
“You…?”
The girl, Amy, didn’t seem to be overly cautious even though I was a stranger. She probably thought I was around her age.
I smiled softly and held Amy’s hand.
“Wait a moment. I’ll make sure you’re not in pain soon.”
“…?”
Amy tilted her head.
In the meantime, I shouted silently inside my mind.
‘Complete healing!’
Then something incredible happened.
A white light began pouring out from my heart and soon flowed through the hand I was holding, into Amy.
“Uh?”
Mars let out a flustered sound. Amy was also looking at me with round eyes like a rabbit.
“What…!”
The light began healing the girl.
Her hands and feet, which had turned completely black from death, regained their original color. Her haggard face, full of life, transformed into the freshness of someone her age.
On the other hand, I—
‘Ugh!’
I held back a cough. My head was spinning, and a chill came over me.
I tasted a fishy smell in my mouth as if blood had backwashed. I bit the inside of my cheek to prevent a scream of pain.
‘I didn’t say it would hurt this much!’
I figured it would hurt less if I had been hit by a truck.
“This, how is this possible?”
“Dad, I’m not in any pain anymore!”
Amy exclaimed with wide eyes.
“Until just now, my head and chest hurt so much, but now I don’t even have a cough!”
“A, ah… Amy…!”
Mars shed tears as he hugged his now-healthy daughter. The sight of a fierce-looking man tearing up and holding his daughter was surprisingly heartwarming.
If only I wasn’t in pain.
‘Ugh, this hurts so much.’
I pressed my chest with my trembling hand. If I relaxed for a moment, I felt like I would pass out embarrassingly, so I kept my back straight.
But that didn’t last long.
“Ugh.”
I couldn’t hold back a groan and collapsed to the ground. Cold sweat poured down.
“A-are you okay?”
Only then did Mars look over and, his eyes wide, he supported my body. I forced a smile.
“I’m fine. Using this ability makes me a little dizzy…”
I didn’t know what kind of expression I was making right now. I just hoped it did not look too full of pain.
Mars’ complexion was strange.
He looked at me with an unreadable gaze, then suddenly knelt and bowed his head as if he had made up his mind.
“I am deeply grateful, Saintess.”
“…What?”
Saintess?
[Mars feels deep gratitude towards you.]
[Good Deed Points +100]
[Amy feels deep gratitude towards you.]
[Good Deed Points +100]
I was flustered and clenched my fists upon seeing the notification window.
It was like an instant reward for my pain.
‘I do good deeds for this!’
Points are like gods!
“I am sorry for not recognizing a benefactor and treating you carelessly! I have nothing, but I will give anything for the Saintess!”
“No, it’s fine. You’ve already given me more than enough in return.”
“…Huh? What have I given you in return…?”
200 points, dear customer.
But I couldn’t say that, so I quickly coated my words with sweetness and said gently.
“I’m very happy to hear that you both are pleased. That alone is enough for me.”
“How can you be so…?”
He muttered with a dazed expression.
At that moment, the status window appeared again.
[You have been given the title of ‘Saintess’.]
[Tip: If more than 100,000 people recognize you as a Saintess, you may acquire the corresponding occupation.]
‘…Huh?’
Occupation?
I paused as I carefully read the tip.
‘Saintess occupation…?’
I wasn’t sure what significance the occupation had, but this was a world straight out of a comic.
A world where the hero party was the main focus.
‘This is a perfect opportunity!’
Of course, to join the main hero party and gain some benefits, you need some special abilities.
‘A Saintess would be the perfect match for the hero’s partner!’
I had planned to start as an apprentice priest at the temple and get close to the main party, but if I became a Saintess, I could skip all those troublesome steps.
My mind was racing for the first time in a while.
I slowly opened my mouth.
“If you want to repay me, there’s one thing I would like to ask.”
“Ah, yes! Please, anything! I’ll do it!”
“Are there any patients around here with symptoms similar to Amy’s?”
“Patients… symptoms?”
He seemed a little surprised at first, but then he started talking.
“There’s a similar patient in every house in the village right now. It seems like an epidemic, but even the doctors are shaking their heads, not knowing the cause.”
As expected.
‘The Black Death is highly contagious.’
The cause of pneumonic plague is droplet transmission, and it is a fast-spreading and contagious disease.
Normally, I would have been cautious to avoid getting infected myself, but—
[Maintains cleanliness] [No need to wash, always fresh, fragrant, and free from odor. Immune to all infectious diseases.]
After checking the status window, I grabbed Mars’ hand with a serious expression.
‘It feels like someone is pushing me to solve the disease.’
Now that it’s come to this, there’s no turning back.
“Mr. Mars, please take me to the places where the patients are.”
I’ll have to become a chain healer.
