Chapter 559: 202, Atlantic City can't be without Donnie, just like the West can't be without Jerusalem_4

Just as Nucky had said, the illegal liquor business had become an interest group tangled with countless people's benefits, some of whom had never met each other, yet they were still in the same interest group.

The IRS wanted to investigate him, which actually meant investigating the entire interest group.

On the surface, the struggle was about Coshek Kevin trying to use the investigation as a stepping stone to become the head of the IRS.

But if one thought about it more deeply... the people at the IRS must know how powerful the interest group behind his illegal liquor business was, and Kevin wasn't foolish; he would know that challenging this group would bring enormous pressure on him.

Yet he had done it anyway...

There had to be a deeper issue behind it.

Perhaps it was the most common type of struggle in the politics of the United States, the power struggle between the White House and Congress!

Donnie didn't know what kind of battle they were waging against each other, but if his guess was correct, these two sides saw him as their battleground!

If his affairs were exposed, it would become the biggest scandal of the Harding Administration, with countless government officials embroiled in it, and at that time, the entire American political scene would have to go through a new reshuffle!

"No, that's not right!"

After having such a hypothesis, Donnie shook his head and continued to analyze the matter.

Congress didn't want to bring the Harding Administration into disrepute; they wanted the Harding Administration to compromise and relinquish their interests in a certain matter.

If that were the case, the investigation would only reach as far as him and would not bring out more people.

So what would his outcome be?

At that time, neither the White House nor Congress would wish for him to keep talking!

Donnie knew what his outcome would be!

Therefore, after analyzing the matter clearly, Donnie had people publicize the investigation into him by Rene Mel and others, aiming for the White House to make a stance on this issue and no longer act as if nothing had happened.

At that point, they would have to stand with him.

Then, the White House would also have to support Michael Ribeiro as the new head of the IRS, just like him!

"Donnie!"

Seeing that Donnie had been silent, Lucy continued, "I want to leave Atlantic City!"

Everyone had their own thoughts and their own interests to consider, and Lucy was no exception. With all that had been happening in Atlantic City lately, she began to worry about her future there.

Since she had a fallback in Los Angeles and cash in hand, she might as well leave this place of trouble!

That was Lucy's thought!

Donnie wasn't surprised by Lucy's choice to leave Atlantic City at this time and said with a smile, "Of course, you can leave Atlantic City anytime if you want!"

Although Lucy was his ace undercover agent placed at Nucky's side, at this point, it seemed there was no longer a need to keep Lucy there.

Having guessed Nucky's thoughts, Donnie also knew what he would do next!

Lucy looked at Donnie in surprise, "Can I really leave?"

Lucy wasn't a fool, initially, she was drawn to Donnie because of his physique, but as time went on, she realized that she had become involved in an incident that could potentially ruin her.

Lucy was not a fool, but she wasn't particularly smart either, she could not predict whether Donnie or Nucky would win in the end, but she knew that either outcome wouldn't be good for her!

However, Donnie's current attitude took her by surprise; he really seemed willing to let her go!

"Relax, I'm not deceiving you, I never intended to sacrifice anything, but there's one thing I need to remind you of," Donnie said with a smile, guessing Lucy's concerns.

"What thing?" Lucy hastened to ask.

"It's fine if you leave. With the money I've given you, and the stocks I bought for you, your future should be secure. So when you leave, don't even think about sneaking away with some of Nucky's things, including his money..."

Donnie believed that Lucy, having been with Nucky for so long, would certainly know where part of his cash was stored. Nucky wouldn't react to a woman suddenly leaving him – he was never short of women. However, if the woman who left suddenly also took his money, that would be a different matter entirely!

This was a matter of pride; Nucky wouldn't tolerate it!

Grateful, Lucy looked at Donnie and said, "I understand, don't worry. I'll only take what Nucky has already given me. I won't touch anything else of Nucky's!"

With that, Lucy stood up, approached Donnie, lifted her skirt, and sat on Donnie's thigh, looking at him with a flirtatious smile, "Let me thank you one last time!"

One last time signified unbridled madness, the kind most men couldn't handle. But fortunately, Donnie wasn't an ordinary soldier; his fighting power was off the charts!

.

The next day, Donnie arrived at the Surf Hotel, and before he even sat down, the phone on the table rang! Experience more on My Virtual Library Empire

Looking at the phone emitting urgent rings, Donnie's mouth curved slightly – maybe this was the call he was waiting for.

He picked up the phone, and the person on the other end didn't disappoint; it was Harry D'Agostino.

"Donnie, have the IRS people come after you?"

On the phone, Harry D'Agostino's tone sounded as if he was completely unaware of the situation.

Donnie played along, "Yeah, the IRS found me, and I'm currently really worried about it!"

Harry D'Agostino said seriously, "Donnie, you rest assured, we will definitely stand by your side on this, and won't let the IRS find anything on you!"

Donnie replied with a laugh, "If that's the case, then I'm truly relieved!"

"However, the IRS really can be troublesome," Harry D'Agostino continued, "I think it would be better for you to come to Washington so we can discuss this in person. I could also take you to negotiate with the IRS!"

The smile on Donnie's face disappeared, then he said, "I would love to go to Washington at this time, but the reality won't allow it. The IRS people are here in Atlantic City, and I must monitor their movements constantly. I think it's better, Harry, if you come to Atlantic City. We can discuss it thoroughly, how does that sound?"

On the other end of the phone, Harry D'Agostino fell silent for a moment, then laughed, "No problem, I'll head to Atlantic City in a couple of days!"
