Chapter 3 - The First Anime (1)
“Nymph and Goblin”.
A 40-minute short animation I created to steal the attention of the little brats.
The plot was simple.
A goblin spots a nymph left alone in an empty house and breaks in to eat her.
But the nymph sets traps by combining various tools in the house, or uses the unique abilities of nymphs to outwit the goblin and chase him out of the house.
If it sounds familiar, well, that’s because it is.
Because this anime was actually a hybrid chimera mixed with the essence of creative works that humanity has accumulated over countless ages.
‘Home Alone, Tom and Jerry, The Simpsons, and what else was there.’
Anyway, I made the anime by mixing the plots and clichés of various works, some of which I couldn’t even remember the names of.
If I had made such an anime in 21st century Korea, I would have been cursed at for creating a terrible cliché-ridden anime.
But this is a fantasy world where Japanese and American animations have not just become ordinary, but have completely disappeared.
So for the people of this world, an anime full of clichés would inevitably be received as something novel and new.
In fact, even the noble brats were writing rave reviews saying they had never seen anything so fun after watching the animation.
Even brats from noble families I had never seen before were flocking to watch the anime, so what more needs to be said?
Thanks to this, the isekai Everland was on the verge of closure due to lack of popularity, but I felt only joy at this fact.
‘Let’s keep it going like this.’
So I thought my perfect plan was progressing smoothly.
Until a precious guest, who didn’t fit at all with a humble family like the Tersian Barony, visited this place to see me.
“…Serika?”
“Long time no see, Ragna. So, it’s been… about 3 years since we last met?”
Serika, the young lady of the Grinewald Ducal family and also my childhood friend, visited the baron’s house and watched the animation with her younger sister.
To be honest, I had felt very uncomfortable with Serika, who was the daughter of a duke, for a very long time.
But very sadly, I didn’t have the option of pretending not to know Serika.
“…Yeah, it’s been a while. Serika.”
I said with a voice that seemed to have a bit of buffering.
This wasn’t a symptom of me being a complete loser who hadn’t even properly held a girl’s hand in my previous life.
‘Damn… Why on earth did she come to a rural place like the Tersian Barony?’
On the surface, we might look like equals who spoke casually to each other, but the reality was far from it.
After all, the Grinewald Ducal family was considered the most noble family in the empire, except for the imperial family.
They were too big a shot for the pathetic noble Tersian Barony, which couldn’t even talk back to a single ferret from a count’s family.
It was inevitable to feel naturally intimidated in this situation.
“I just watched the animation you made. It was very interesting. My younger sister seems satisfied too.”
Well, that’s inevitable.
Although it was basically made for kids to watch, I made it interesting even for adults to watch.
It’s the same principle as how most of the people who actually watch magical girl anime made for kids on Earth are adults.
Anyway, Serika started to talk about various things related to the animation while holding onto me.
At first, I thought it was just superficial small talk typical of popular people.
But as time passed, the atmosphere started to become strange.
Like this, roughly.
“In my view, the nymph seems to symbolize nature, and the goblin seems to symbolize humans destroying nature. How should I put it, it’s a work that directly faces the ugliness of human civilization.”
“The goblin’s actions of bullying the nymph symbolize people who don’t consider others, right?”
“The nymph subduing the goblin without killing it is a direct shot at modern people who have become very insensitive to taking life, right? Isn’t it?”
“…..”
At first, I thought she was just sharing her impressions after watching the anime to the end.
But as time passed, she started to come up with strange interpretations that even I, the creator, couldn’t understand.
‘What the hell is that, you otaku.’
I originally made the anime as a way for kids to kill time, not to criticize the irrationalities of modern society.
After talking to me about various things for quite a while, Serika opened her mouth, clicking her tongue as if very regretful.
“Your anime is really interesting… but there are a few things that are a bit disappointing. For example, the characters don’t have voices, things like that.”
“That’s something I couldn’t help. After all, I made the anime alone, so there were various limitations.”
In fact, I too had a burning desire to give voices to the characters in the anime.
But that was impossible even with magic.
To be precise, the moment I used magic to give voices to the characters in the anime, some kind of stiff mechanical sound like AI-generated came out.
If I had continued like that, there was a risk of lowering the quality of the animation, so I had to tearfully remove the voices.
“Hmm, is that so? Then Ragna, do you have any plans to make a sequel?”
“A sequel? Hmm… I’ve made some plans, actually.”
This wasn’t just an empty promise, but the truth.
No matter how much I liked to freeload everything, it was impossible to keep the noble brats captivated for life with just one 40-minute animation.
Hearing my words, Serika made an expression as if thinking about something, then opened her mouth.
“Hey, Ragna. There’s one thing I’d like to ask of you.”
“…A request? What is it?”
I felt an inexplicable ominousness while looking at Serika.
Sure enough, the words that came out of Serika’s mouth were beyond my imagination.
“If you’re going to make a sequel… would you consider adding a voice to the protagonist nymph? It’s… everything else is good, but without a voice, it feels somewhat incomplete…”
“What?”
So, is she suggesting that we seriously use voice actors for the animation?
Serika El Grinewald was a woman who loved art very much.
She loved the poems, songs, and paintings that humanity had created, and she herself was born with tremendous talent for it.
To the extent that if she hadn’t been born as the daughter of a duke’s family, it was evaluated that the history of the empire’s art world would have been greatly changed.
Therefore, Serika had considerable interest in the art genre called ‘animation’ that her childhood friend had created.
‘Animation, a moving picture storybook…’
To be honest, moving pictures isn’t such a novel idea.
Because there are plenty of storybooks created by magicians where the illustrations move by themselves.
In fact, there were a few such storybooks in the duke’s family too.
So Serika could roughly guess what the ‘animation’ that Ragna had newly created was, while listening to Isabel’s words.
‘Only young children would find moving picture storybooks interesting. But since it’s an art piece made by Ragna, I should go and cheer him on by saying it’s interesting.’
So Serika visited the Tersian Barony and watched the animation called “Nymph and Goblin”.
‘…This can’t be. To think that such an amazing thing existed in this world.’
That day, she experienced a new world.
‘At first glance, it reminds one of a moving picture storybook, but its essence is completely different. This thing called animation… it’s clearly made to give fun to children!’
That’s right.
There were countless storybooks for children in the empire, but their essence was not to give fun to children, but to give some kind of lesson.
You should live kindly. You shouldn’t lie. You should be loyal to the empire and His Majesty the Emperor…
As a result, storybooks tended to have stories that were too boring for children to read.
But it couldn’t be helped.
No matter how hard the writers tried, it wasn’t easy to capture both fun and lessons.
But this thing called ‘animation’ made by Ragna Tersian was different.
This was made primarily to give fun to children.
In fact, Serika was so engrossed in the story while watching the anime that she didn’t even realize how time was passing.
Moreover, this animation went beyond the level of a mere ‘moving picture storybook’, making Serika wonder if the characters were really alive and moving.
It was surprising. And it was marvelous.
She had thought that novels, plays, and operas were the entirety of art, but that wasn’t the case.
But because of this, Serika felt regret.
‘If only voices could be added to that animation… it would have been an even more perfect work!’
The animation “Nymph and Goblin” made by Ragna was a flawless work of art.
But it felt truly regrettable that while background music and sound effects were properly inserted in the animation, the characters had no voices.
If Serika had been an ordinary person, she would have just felt that sentiment and quietly gone home.
But Serika wasn’t an ordinary person, she was both an excellent artist herself and the daughter of the Grinewald Ducal family, which gave tremendous sponsorship to artists every year.
Also, Ragna was her one and only precious childhood friend.
She knew well that his family’s circumstances weren’t very well off, so she wanted to do something for him.
Money was overflowing for her, so that sort of thing wasn’t important.
That’s why.
“If you’re going to make a sequel… would you consider adding a voice to the protagonist nymph? It’s… everything else is good, but without a voice, it feels somewhat incomplete…”
“What?”
“So I was wondering, if it’s okay with you, could I find someone suitable to voice the nymph? I know a few people with really good voices in theater or opera.”
Just thinking about who would voice the nymph made Serika feel her heart pounding endlessly.
And so, Serika completed her secondary job change from a simple otaku to a voice actor otaku.
