Apocalypse Survival Why Do I Have A Lust System

Chapter 3: The Shattering Silence

Selene tossed and turned in bed, her mind restless. The eerie stillness outside her window amplified her unease. Every creak of the apartment, every gust of wind felt amplified in the quiet. Luna, curled up at the foot of the bed, let out a soft purr, oblivious to the tension in the air.

Her thoughts lingered on the news broadcast. The glowing cracks in the sky, the strange disappearances in distant towns—it all felt like the start of something bigger. But she wasn't ready to confront that. Not yet.

"Maybe it's nothing," she whispered to herself.

But deep down, she knew that wasn't true.

The blaring of her alarm broke the silence, pulling her from a restless sleep. Morning had come too soon, and the weight of unease still clung to her chest. Selene groaned, dragging herself out of bed and into the shower. The warm water helped ease her nerves, but only slightly.

The streets were even quieter than the day before as she walked to the diner. The familiar sights—the bakery on the corner, the florist arranging displays in the window—felt strangely alien, as if they belonged to another life.

When she arrived at the diner, Meg was already pacing behind the counter, her phone clutched tightly in her hand.

"Selene, did you hear?" Meg asked, her voice strained.

"Hear what?"

"Another town... gone," Meg said, lowering her phone to reveal a live feed of the news.

Selene's stomach dropped as she glanced at the screen. The image was haunting: a drone captured aerial footage of a once-bustling town now reduced to rubble. The camera zoomed in on a massive glowing fissure at the town's center, pulsating with an unnatural light.

"How does a whole town just disappear?" Selene whispered, her voice trembling.

"I don't know, but it's happening more often," Meg replied, lowering her voice. "People are saying it's not natural—something about the cracks spreading."

Selene shook her head, trying to push down the fear bubbling inside her. "It's probably just a geological thing. Earthquakes or... something."

"Yeah, sure," Meg muttered, unconvinced.

The day dragged on uneventfully, but the tension in the air was palpable. Customers came and went, their conversations dominated by the news. Everyone was on edge, waiting for something to happen.

Selene tried to focus on her work, but her mind kept drifting. She thought about the eerie stillness outside, the glowing fissures, the empty streets. It felt like the world was holding its breath.

As her shift ended, Selene lingered at the counter, staring out the window. The sky was darker than usual, heavy clouds swirling ominously.

"Selene," Meg called, pulling her from her thoughts. "You okay?"

"Yeah," Selene replied quickly, forcing a smile. "Just tired."

Meg frowned but didn't press further. "Be careful out there, okay?"

"I will," Selene promised, grabbing her bag and heading out the door.

The streets were eerily empty as she walked home. The usual hum of the city was replaced by an unsettling silence. Selene quickened her pace, her eyes darting to every shadow.

As she turned a corner, a sudden gust of wind whipped past her, carrying with it a faint, otherworldly hum. She froze, her heart pounding in her chest.

"What the hell was that?" she whispered, looking around.

The hum faded as quickly as it had come, leaving only silence in its wake. Selene shook her head, forcing herself to keep moving.

When she reached her apartment, she locked the door behind her and leaned against it, trying to calm her racing heart. Luna meowed softly, rubbing against her legs.

"It's just in your head," she told herself, scooping Luna into her arms. "You're overthinking it."

But as she glanced out the window, her breath caught in her throat.

Far in the distance, just above the city skyline, a faint glow pulsed against the clouds. It was barely visible, but it was there—a crack, identical to the ones she'd seen on the news.

Selene stared at it, a cold dread washing over her.

This wasn't just happening in other towns. It was here.

And something told her it wasn't going away.

The faint glow in the sky haunted Selene throughout the night. She tried to shake it off, but every time she closed her eyes, the image of that pulsating crack etched itself deeper into her mind.

She woke to the sound of her phone vibrating on the nightstand. Groggy, she reached for it, squinting at the screen. It was Meg.

"Hello?" Selene croaked, sitting up in bed.

"Selene! Did you feel that?" Meg's voice was frantic.

"Feel what?" Selene asked, her heart already racing.

"There was a tremor. Like, the whole diner shook! I swear the ground felt... alive."

Selene frowned, swinging her legs off the bed. "A tremor? Are you sure?"

"Of course, I'm sure! It wasn't huge, but it wasn't normal either. And people are saying they saw more of those cracks in the sky."

Selene stood, moving to her window. The city looked the same as ever—quiet, still, almost too peaceful. "I didn't feel anything here. Maybe it was just localized?"

"Maybe," Meg said, though her voice betrayed her doubt. "But something's happening, Selene. It's like the world's unraveling or something."

Selene didn't respond. She hung up after a few more reassurances, but Meg's words clung to her.
