Apocalyptic Disasters: Carrying a bun and hoarding supplies

Chapter 48: Mutated Rats

"Hey, are you going out of this city? Then can you bring my family with you? I am willing to give a hundred yuan. Its two times the cab fare!"

The man who was standing outside the car shouted loudly and he continued to bang on their window with great momentum. It looked like he wanted to break the glass open and force his way inside. His desperation was clearly visible!

Lei Yan had never seen such a sight before; she was terrified at the sight of the furious man who was acting as if they had taken his car.

Even Mother and Father Lei sensed that there was something wrong with the man. Why was he so anxious to get out of this city? Wasn't it just heavy rain? So why was this man panicking like he was being chased by monsters?

"Master Lei," the guard who sat on the driver's seat turned to look at Lei Qian and asked, "Should I—"

"No," before the guard could finish speaking, Lei Qian brutally rejected him. He glanced at the man who was banging on the window of his car and noticed several injuries on his other arm that he was trying to hide.

He didn't know why this man was trying so hard to hide his wounds; Lei Qian was certain that it was nothing good. What was more, the man was quite aggressive. With his mother and sister in the car, Lei Qian dared not take any risks.

He said to the guard, "Just drive. Do you think we have the time to play the role of saviour?"

When the guard heard the words of Lei Qian, he blushed red in embarrassment. He only said those words because he saw the sickly woman and the two-month-old child that she was carrying in her arms; if not for the child, he wouldn't have bothered with the man.

However, no matter how sympathetic he was, the guard wouldn't dare to go against the direct orders of his boss.

The guard placed his foot on the accelerator and drove away; he saw the reflection of the man who was still chasing after them and yelling at the top of his voice.

His expression was hideous as he crouched down and picked up a stone before hurling it at their car. And he wasn't the only one; three seconds later, the people who were hiding in a dark alley rushed out and started throwing rocks at their car as if determined to break the glass of their car's windows.

"Where are you going? Take us with you."

"Let me get in the car. I am willing to pay."

"You bastard. I said stop for laozi!"

The crowd chased after their car fiercely as if they wanted to topple the car and take it under their control.

Fortunately, Lei Qian never travelled in cars that didn't have bulletproof glass used in windows. Thus, these rocks couldn't do any harm to their car.

"Ah Qian, I think there is something wrong with this city." Mother Lei was stupefied when she saw that there were actually a group of people waiting for them to open the doors of their car.

She looked at the crowd that was staring at their car with resentful gazes and shuddered.

Thankfully, her son had his wits intact and he did not open the door by taking pity on that man.

Lei Qian didn't say anything. He already sensed there was something amiss when the officers at the checkpoint tried to convince him to go back. But he kept this small detail to himself because he didn't wish to scare his parents and younger sister when they were already terrified enough.

Rain continued to lash against the car, and with the streets being as quiet as those of the deserted and abandoned cities, the sound of the raindrops sounded even more eerie than usual.

"This is really weird," Lei Yan stared at the deserted streets and boarded shops through the window. She remarked, "Why is this place so quiet? Its as if no one lives here."

Mother Lei also had the same worries. These past few days their family never stepped out of the small mansion where they were staying and thus she had no idea what was going on outside.

She turned to look at her husband and questioned, "What do you think is going on here?" Wasn't this security a bit too much for just heavy rain?

"I—ahhhh!" Before Father Lei could reply, the guard swivelled the car to one side, causing everyone inside the car to almost tumble. But fortunately they were all wearing seatbelts; thus, no one got hurt.

Lei Yan straightened up in her seat and snapped, "How are you driving the car? We could have gotten hurt just now."

But the guard was no longer listening to her and instead staring at something with a look of terror on his face. His ability to speak seemed to be robbed as his mouth was open in a silent scream.

"Wh—what is that?" the other guard stammered as he pointed at a large chunk of fur.

The Lei family members also turned to look at the dark thing that was standing in front of them and collectively sucked in a breath.

"What the hell is that? Is that a rat? But why is it so big? Damn, it looks like one of those monsters in the end of the world movies." Lei Yan screamed as she looked at the gigantic rat that was bigger than a dog but smaller than a pig.

As if the monster heard Lei Yan's scream, it turned around and pounced on their car.

Seeing this, Lei Qian reacted quickly. He reached out and turned the steering wheel to the other side, dodging the monster rat that was attacking their car. At the same time he also activated the defensive mechanism of the car. Thus, when the rat attacked him again, Lei Qian unlocked the mounted turret and started to control it through the control panel.

"Get back," he shouted at the guard who was sitting in the driver's seat like a statue.

However, it seemed like the guard had lost his soul. He remained seated with his eyes popping out of their sockets and his eyes wide with terror. Annoyed, Lei Qian caught hold of the guard's shirt and wrenched him out of the chair before jumping in the seat. However, as soon as he took over, the mutated rat let out a chattering roar.

BOOM!
