Chapter 596: A Fleet Of Cars (2)
At the entrance of the city, Bai Zhan had been building a wall that was impenetrable; there were four long watch towers with people guarding the base. When one of the guards noticed the fleet of black cars arriving, he immediately called for Bai Zhan, who arrived in a hurry. This wall that was being built around the main centre of the city was built after many of the big skyscrapers were brought down by the ability users.
Because of this, their base stuck out like a sore thumb. Bai Zhan was not surprised that they were found so soon, but he was still surprised when he saw that someone from the old base came to look for them so soon. Shouldn't they be busy handling the problem of the mutated bugs? What were they doing looking for them?
However, just as he was about to ask the guards to attack the fleet of cars, someone stepped out of the car and looked up at him.
Seeing the familiar stranger, Bai Zhan couldn't help but frown. He brought his hand down and said to the guards, "Open the gates and let them in."
Bai Meiyue was sipping on a warm cup of chicken soup when she received news that Bai Feng had come looking for her. She frowned, and a hint of annoyance flashed in her eyes, but she still pushed it back for all the help that Bai Feng had given to her. Even though the man was a fool, she knew that it was not his fault. He had never learnt anything other than how to be a good chess piece for the Bai family.
In fact, compared to her of the past, he was still a bit better. Okay, maybe loads better.
She got to her feet and then headed down the porch before coming to a stop near the small lounge, which was once used as a tea room by the family who lived here. She sat down on the delicate couch and waited for her brother to bring Bai Feng to the mansion after getting her permission. It took two hours for Bai Feng and his team to arrive. There was no other way around, as Bai Zhan was not going to barge into their base with weapons and everything intact. Even Bai Feng was not allowed to enter.
It was only when the man swore that he would do nothing to bring harm to Bai Meiyue that he was allowed to enter the base, and along with him came his weakest ability user. Even Luo Jingguo was not allowed to follow him.
At first, Bai Meiyue didn't understand why this man was coming to see her, but when she saw the many children, elderly and weak, along with twenty or so pregnant women, she couldn't curl her lips mockingly. What was this? Don't tell her that Bai Feng was treating her base as some kind of welfare home for the helpless and needy.
She got to her feet and supported her five-month-old pregnant belly, and walked toward Bai Feng, who was heading her way. She glanced at the many people who were following him; they all looked helpless, confused and panicked. She had no idea what they had seen in the safe base, but it seemed like it was nothing good.
However, she would get to them later on. Instead, she turned her attention to Bai Feng, who was wearing a tight and fitting black shirt with cargo pants that belonged to the army soldiers. She blinked her eyes at her big brother and questioned, "How did you know that I was here? It's quite far from the safe base. Have you been keeping an eye on me?"
As soon as she finished speaking, a hint of hostility rose in the air, and everyone shuffled close to one another.
"It's nothing like you are expecting. No one betrayed you," Bai Feng replied, while studying the woman in front of him. Bai Meiyue had gotten even prettier; her pregnancy seemed to be growing well, as her face was glowing. She was dressed in a peach maternity dress that had pockets, and they were bulging with snacks; it reminded him of a hamster that he had when he was a child.
With her feet clad in flat sandals and two sunflower clips in her hair, she looked really cute. As she did when she was a toddler. And yet, at the moment, the woman looked so fierce that Bai Feng didn't even dare to breathe loudly.
"No one betrayed you," he added softly but loud enough for Bai Meiyue to hear what he was saying. He looked around the mansion where Bai Meiyue was living and sighed. In a short period of time, which might not even amount to less than two months, Bai Meiyue achieved what Yu Miaomiao had been threatening to achieve for almost a year. "You have created quite a wonderful base; it's really comfortable here."
As soon as he finished speaking, he lowered his eyes to hide the murderous intent that was flooding in them. Of course, others didn't notice it, but Bai Meiyue did. As a human weapon that was used like a mechanical machine gun by the higher officials of her base, Bai Meiyue could naturally sense the rage and hatred that was burning in Bai Feng's eyes, but what did this man face in a few weeks that he developed the same kind of personality that she developed in two years?
She turned on her feet and said, "Come and sit down, you seem dead tired on your feet. Maybe a cup of calming tea will help you."
She then headed inside the tea lounge and sat down on the recliner.
A survivor who was responsible for taking care of Bai Meiyue hurriedly made the tea and pushed it in front of Bai Feng and her. Of course, Bai Meiyue didn't drink it. Instead she looked at Bai Feng and questioned, "Just tell me what are you doing here?"
