"Waaahhh!!!"
Nekko's heartbroken sobs echoed in Link Star's ears as he tilted his head, his usually sharp mind momentarily freezing up.
Nekko... had her heart broken?
Heartbroken?
HEARTBROKEN!!!
Did someone just steal the little cabbage I've been carefully nurturing in my own backyard?
Taking a deep breath, Link's face twisted into a terrifyingly kind smile.
This was absolutely unacceptable!
I'm going to sink that brat to the bottom of the ocean and feed him to the fish!
Not even the Octonauts could save him!
But—
Link suddenly remembered something. According to the lore, Nekko was actually a lesbian—the first LGBTQ+ champion officially acknowledged by Riot's designers.
If he hadn't adopted Nekko at the docks, she would have boarded a ship to Ixtal, where she would have met Nidalee in the jungle and lived a happy life with her.
It was only after receiving a vision from her deceased elder in a dream that Nekko would set out again to rebuild the Oovi-Kat tribe—a tribe where Vastaya, yordles, humans, and any being willing to share the same dream could become one family.
Realizing this, Link wiped the cold sweat from his forehead. The little cabbage in his backyard hadn't been stolen after all. So, what was the real reason for Nekko's tears?
Kneeling down, Link gently patted Nekko's head and asked patiently, "Nekko, what's wrong? Tell me everything."
"Nekko's favorite cheesecake got stolen! Nekko lost her favorite thing! Nekko's heart is broken!"
Hearing Nekko's explanation, Link's mouth twitched. Maybe he should send her to school once they got back to Piltover.
Not only did she have a natural lisp, but her choice of words was also problematic. She almost got a lot of innocent people in trouble.
After all, the Link who adopted you, Nekko, would sink an entire city for your sake!
So, yeah, it's time for this kid to go to school.
"The cake was stolen?"
Link looked at the empty bowl that had once held Nekko's freshly baked cake. Now, only a few crumbs stuck to the bottom. On the table, there were also two wet pieces of seaweed and a fish lying on its side, eyes wide open as if it had died in despair.
"This is... interesting."
Seeing the seaweed and fish left behind, Link began to form a hypothesis.
He immediately started investigating the scene.
Thanks to his serum-enhanced abilities, he could see details that ordinary people would miss. In his vision, the floor was covered in puddles of water that hadn't dried yet. These puddles looked like frog footprints with webbed toes, leading from the water jar in the corner of the kitchen all the way to the table.
Noticing this, Link walked over to the water jar and lifted the lid, staring thoughtfully at the slightly murky water inside.
The airship was staffed entirely by Ferros family members. No outsider could have snuck in.
Yet, someone had managed to infiltrate the airship and steal Nekko's freshly baked, ultra-sweet cake.
This was fascinating!
It meant the intruder had bypassed the airship's security and reached the kitchen undetected.
The only way to do that was through magic.
Combined with the water trails, seaweed, and the dead fish, the truth became clear.
It was Fizz, the Tidal Trickster!
Fizz had the ability to travel through water sources.
As a yordle, it wasn't surprising that Fizz possessed such strange and ancient powers.
Only he could have used the water in the jar to enter the airship and steal Nekko's cake.
Otherwise, how do you think Fizz got his ultimate ability?
Fizz, the little fish, was someone even the people of Bilgewater dared not provoke. In fact, none of the four legendary figures of Bilgewater were willing to mess with him.
This mischievous Tidal Trickster loved playing pranks, but his antics often led to disaster.
For example, if you paid your tithe to Nautilus, the Titan of the Depths, Fizz might sneak in and steal the gold you threw into the sea, leaving you to face Nautilus' wrath.
Or, if you threw the gold into the sea, Fizz might notice and toss it right back at you.
You throw it down, he throws it up.
Down, up.
An endless loop!
This quirky little fish had been disconnected from the modern world for so long that his language was completely different from what people used today.
Unable to communicate and with his playful nature, Fizz had become one of Bilgewater's four terrifying legends!
Being targeted by Fizz meant he would follow you around until he lost interest.
While he was watching you, you couldn't pay your tithe, because no matter how much gold you threw into the sea, he would either steal it or throw it back.
If he threw it back on the spot, that was still manageable. The crew and captain would know they couldn't set sail that day.
But if he simply stole it, Nautilus' anchor would smash through your ship and drag you into the depths!
"Link, do you know who did it?" Nekko watched Link's expression closely. Link smiled and ruffled her hair. "I think I do."
"We have to catch this bad guy!" Nekko raised her arms, shouting loudly to express her frustration.
"He stole Nekko's favorite cheesecake! Nekko is so mad!"
"Alright, alright—" Link glanced at the empty cheesecake plate. "Let's catch the thief, then."
"Yes, yes, yes!"
The sickly sweet aroma of cake filled the kitchen as Link, holding his nose, pulled a fresh batch out of the oven and placed it on the table.
Half an hour had passed since Nekko's cake was stolen.
Although Link wasn't entirely sure how big Fizz's appetite was, considering the little guy had eaten Nekko's cake, his stomach must be quite resilient.
After all, Nekko's cakes were... something else. While most people put sugar in their cakes, Nekko put cake in her sugar.
Just looking at it made Link lose his appetite, but since Nekko loved it, he let her have her way.
Now, to avenge Nekko and catch the little thief who had stolen her cake—and maybe even recruit the little guy to work for him.
As for communication?
That was a joke. Nekko could absorb someone's "essence" to transform into them, gaining their memories, emotions, and traits in the process.
All she needed was to touch Fizz once, and she could transform into him and communicate.
Then, it would just be a matter of convincing him to work for Link!
To that end, Link had Nekko bake another batch of cake—still more sugar than cake.
As Nekko bit her finger, drooling over the cake on the table, Link grabbed her tail and dragged her out of the kitchen.
"Nekko's cake is gone!"
"I'll make you ten more later!"
"Really?"
"Really!"
