"Shark!!"
Fizz's energetic voice echoed through the kitchen as Neeko sat in the corner, sulking and drawing circles on the floor.
In an effort to welcome her new friend, Neeko had volunteered to bake a third cheesecake. The first two had been snatched away before she could taste them, leaving her frustrated. This time, she finally got to try her creation—only to find it unbearably sweet.
Watching Neeko pout in the corner, Link couldn't help but chuckle. At her core, Neeko was still a child. She hadn't had the chance to learn many things before embarking on her journey.
Maybe I should enroll her in school once we're back in Piltover, Link thought.
Meanwhile, Fizz, using his coral trident as a utensil, was devouring the cheesecake with gusto. Seeing how much he enjoyed it, Link decided to let him have his fill.
Once Fizz was done, Link pulled Neeko over to act as a translator.
"Hello, my name is Link," he said, extending his hand with a warm smile. After Neeko's rapid-fire translation, Fizz stomped his feet excitedly and grabbed Link's hand, shouting, "Shark!!"
"Alright, shark it is," Link replied with a laugh.
"Neeko, make sure you translate properly," Link reminded her.
"Neeko knows!"
With Neeko acting as the intermediary, Link began his conversation with Fizz.
"Fizz, can I call you that?"
"Yes! Fizz likes new friends!"
The little yordle waved his trident around, and Link couldn't help but eye the weapon with interest. If only he could study it, he might gain some insight into Ornn's legendary forging techniques. The trident was said to hold the power to stir the entire ocean, and it accounted for half of Fizz's strength.
"Fizz, if you like cheesecake, you can come by anytime. Just don't play pranks on the others on the ship, okay? It might scare them."
"Why?" Fizz blinked his large, curious eyes. "Playing together is fun!"
"We'll play with you as much as you want. But as a new friend, I have a gift for you."
Link quickly modified a tracking device he had on hand, turning it into a communication tool powered by a shard of Hextech crystal. He fashioned it into an armband with a trident emblem, perfect for Fizz's small frame.
"Shark!!" Fizz cheered, holding up the armband triumphantly.
Neeko, seeing Fizz's new toy, immediately turned to Link with pleading eyes. Sighing, Link pulled out a spare communicator and modified it for her.
Honestly, the best way to keep kids entertained is with games, Link thought. I wonder if Irelia from the Project program has any gaming consoles. I should get one for these two.
After setting up a game of aerial chess for Neeko and Fizz to play, Link and Camille stepped out of the kitchen.
Closing the door behind them, Camille smiled. "Seeing these carefree children makes me feel young again."
"Given your slowed aging and the enhancements from your Hextech core, you've got at least two to three hundred years left," Link said. "You're essentially in the prime of your life and will stay that way for a long time."
"And if we find a way to recharge or replace your core, combined with my serum, you could easily live five hundred years."
"Do you desire immortality?" Camille asked suddenly.
Link paused, his mind drifting to his past life as a Chinese man. The topic of immortality was one he had pondered deeply.
"I don't desire immortality, Camille," Link said seriously. "I've already achieved it."
"Oh?" Camille raised an eyebrow.
"I've undergone comprehensive biological enhancements," Link explained. "Unlike Vander's forced, unnatural modifications, mine are tailored to my body and work in harmony with it. I've broken the limits of human potential. My lifespan is projected to be around two hundred and sixty years, and that's just the beginning. As my technology advances, I'll continue to enhance myself, pushing the boundaries of longevity."
"Until you achieve true immortality?" Camille tilted her head.
"Until I achieve true immortality," Link confirmed.
"Impressive," Camille said, her tone thoughtful. "Perhaps, in a few centuries, you'll take my place as the pillar of the family."
"Taking you in was the best investment I ever made," she added with a faint smile.
Link didn't respond. Their relationship had started as a transaction, but over time, it had evolved into something deeper. Such was the nature of humanity.
"What are your plans for Fizz?" Camille asked, her tone shifting back to her usual cool, calculating self.
"Fizz's value isn't in fighting the Harrowing. His value lies in helping us solidify our control over Bilgewater," Link explained.
"As one of Bilgewater's four great terrors, his presence alone gives us a significant advantage. If we can gain the allegiance of the other legends, our hold on Bilgewater will be unshakable."
"Fizz, Nautilus, Pyke, Tahm Kench..." Camille listed the names of the four terrors. "Securing even one is a stroke of luck. Don't get greedy."
"Nautilus and Pyke might be difficult, but Tahm Kench..." Link's voice trailed off as he recalled his earlier plans.
"You have a way to deal with a demon?" Camille asked, intrigued.
"Demons feed on human emotions—fear, pain, greed, envy, hatred..." Link counted off on his fingers. "But if humans can suppress their emotions, maintaining a calm and stable state, demons lose their food source."
"I've developed a serum that can inhibit human emotions, potentially rendering them emotionless. It's still in the experimental phase, though."
