Chapter 21: Falling and a New Purpose
The silence in Kara's apartment was heavier than usual, a suffocating blanket woven from grief and exhaustion. Myriad was over, the city saved, but the cost had been immense. Astra was gone, and the weight of that loss, coupled with the terrible choices made, pressed down on Kara like a lead blanket. Adam sat on the edge of her couch, a silent, comforting presence. He didn't try to fill the void with empty words or forced cheer. He just was.
Kara was curled up, a blanket pulled tight around her, staring blankly at the flickering news reports that praised Supergirl's heroism. The irony was a bitter taste in Adam's mouth. They celebrated the hero, oblivious to the shattered heart beneath the cape.
"They don't know," Kara whispered, her voice raw. "They don't know what it cost. What I cost."
Adam reached out, gently rubbing her arm. "No, they don't. And maybe that's okay. Sometimes, the burden of being a hero is carrying the weight of the world, even when they don't see it. But you know. Alex knows. J'onn knows. And I know." He paused, then offered a quiet, comforting joke. "Besides, if they knew everything, they'd probably try to give you a medal made of kale. And nobody wants that. Especially not you."
Kara managed a weak, watery chuckle, a fragile sound in the quiet room. "Kale? Seriously, Adam?"
"Hey, it's got nutrients," he defended, a faint smile touching his lips. "And it's green. Like hope. Or, you know, a really aggressive lawn." He then produced a suspiciously healthy-looking smoothie from a bag he'd brought. "Here. It's got kale. Don't tell anyone, it'll ruin my street cred. But you need to eat. Even world-saving heroes need to remember to eat. Otherwise, you'll just be a hangry hero, and nobody wants that."
Kara took the smoothie, her fingers brushing his. The simple gesture, the quiet care, was more comforting than any grand speech. She took a sip, grimacing slightly at the taste. "It tastes like… victory. Mixed with regret. And kale."
Adam chuckled. "See? I told you. Very healthy." He knew her grief was deep, and it wouldn't magically disappear with a smoothie or a sarcastic comment. But he could be there. He could be her anchor. He could help her find a new purpose beyond just fighting villains, beyond the immediate crisis.
"What now?" Kara asked, her voice small. "Myriad is over. Astra is… gone. What do I do?"
Adam looked out the window, at the bustling city below. "Now? Now you breathe. You grieve. And then, you figure out what kind of hero you want to be. You saved the world, Kara. You literally pulled it back from the brink. That's not just about fighting. It's about inspiring. It's about hope. It's about showing people that even when things are at their darkest, there's still light."
He turned back to her, his gaze steady. "Maybe it's not just about stopping the next big bad. Maybe it's about building something. Something better. Something that prevents the next Myriad from ever happening. You have a chance to shape this world, Kara. To make it truly better. Not just safer. That's a purpose worth fighting for. And I'll be right here, cheering you on. Or, you know, making sure you don't accidentally flatten a building during a particularly intense emotional moment. My Adapt System is pretty good, but it's not that good."
Kara managed a genuine smile, a flicker of light in her eyes. His words, his unwavering belief in her, were a balm to her wounded soul. Their relationship had deepened into a profound emotional intimacy, a bond forged in shared trauma and unwavering support. He was her primary anchor in her grief, pulling her back from the abyss of despair.
"He sees it," Kara thought, her hand reaching out to squeeze his. "He sees the potential. He sees the future. And he's willing to walk into it with me."
