I was waiting near the Occult Research Club building for the student council. Though I was technically part of the council, my main goal today was to get myself a familiar. After a few minutes, the doors opened, and the student council walked in together, led by Sona.
"Shall we?" Sona asked, her usual composed demeanor intact.
….
The dodgeball match had just started. Koneko, uninterested in participating, opted to sit on the sidelines. Meanwhile, I was in the thick of the action. I dodged a ball with a one-handed backflip and immediately grabbed another ball lying nearby. I hurled it at Tsubaki, yelling, "THIS BITCH EMPTY—YEET!"
Tsubaki's shocked expression was priceless as she got hit and was taken out. Saji was on the verge of losing it, trying to stifle his laughter, while Issei was biting his lips to hold back a chuckle. Sona, however, glared daggers at me, her disapproval clear. Koneko, sitting nearby, mirrored her expression, clearly displeased at my choice of words.
I shrugged it off and caught another ball mid-air, eliminating one of Sona's pawns. Deciding to mess with Saji, I feigned a throw in his direction. He panicked and jumped, only to realize it was a fakeout. Smirking, I turned and threw the ball at Sona instead. Before it could hit her, one of her pawns jumped in and took the hit for her.
….
"I knew we could win," I said confidently, grinning as I leaned back.
Sona, her arms crossed, nodded reluctantly. "Yes, you all won. So, as promised, you may now go to the Familiar Forest."
"Thanks," I replied, satisfied with the outcome.
….
The Occult Research Club gathered in their room, preparing to leave for the Familiar Forest. We used a magic circle to transport ourselves, arriving in what could only be described as a foreboding area. The eerie atmosphere didn't faze me, though.
Standing nearby was a man who looked like a budget Ash Ketchum. I rolled my eyes and immediately started walking off. Before I could go far, I felt a gentle tug on my sleeve. I turned to see Koneko standing beside me.
"I'm going with you," she said firmly.
"Okay," I replied, smiling slightly.
….
As Koneko and I walked through the forest, we passed various creatures—bats, birds, cats, and even a few snakes. Eventually, we came across a cave covered in snow, its icy entrance standing out against the dark surroundings.
"The Familiar Master mentioned that a really powerful familiar resides in this cave," Koneko said, eyeing the entrance warily.
"Good," I said, already stepping toward it.
"I'll wait here," Koneko decided, crossing her arms.
"Suit yourself," I replied before heading inside.
….
The cave was cold and eerily silent, the walls shimmering with frost as I trudged through the icy terrain. After what felt like forever, I emerged into a clearing blanketed in snow. The air was crisp and still—until a loud cry echoed through the area.
"CAW!!!"
I looked up to see a magnificent creature perched on a ledge. My eyes widened in awe.
"Woah," I muttered.
"Who dares trespass in my domain?" boomed the voice of the creature, regal and commanding.
"Uh, me," I replied awkwardly.
The creature's piercing gaze studied me. "A young boy… And what brings you here?"
"I'm looking for a familiar," I said, standing my ground.
The creature tilted its head. "You are not a devil, are you?"
"No, I'm not," I admitted.
"Hmm… You're more dragon than human," the creature said, its tone growing more curious.
"Ehh?! How did you know?" I asked, startled.
"I can sense it," the creature replied. "Your Sacred Gear… it's Voltaris, isn't it?"
Voltaris's voice resonated in my mind. Ah, so you noticed.
The gauntlets of my Sacred Gear appeared on my hands. The creature nodded in recognition.
"It's been a while," Voltaris said, his tone familiar.
"Yes, it has," the creature replied, its voice softer now.
I blinked in confusion. "Wait, you two know each other?"
Voltaris chuckled. Of course. She is a unique being—one of a kind. But, sadly, she has no name.
The creature shifted, its tone more direct. "I could become your familiar."
Voltaris's tone turned serious. Shiro, she is on par with a Dragon King. If you form a contract with her, she'll be invaluable. I strongly recommend it.
I looked at the creature. "That's only if she wants to," I said, my tone sincere.
The creature's gaze softened. "I do. I can sense something deep within your soul. You're destined for great things."
I nodded. "Alright, so how do we do this?"
"Make a contract," Voltaris instructed.
The creature descended gracefully, landing before me. As she transformed into a humanoid form, I couldn't help but stare.
"Woah…" I muttered, taken aback by her beauty.
"Oh, you think I'm pretty?" she teased, a playful smile on her lips.
I felt my face heat up. "N-never mind! Let's just do the stupid contract."
….
With the contract complete, she smiled at me. "I am now your familiar. But you need to give me a name."
I thought for a moment before answering, "How about Frost?"
Her eyes sparkled. "Oh, I like that."
"Alright, Frost," I said, grinning. "Let's get out of here."
With that, we began the journey back to the group.
As we exited the cave, Koneko stood waiting, arms crossed and watching me closely. Her gaze shifted to Frost, who perched comfortably on my shoulders, her bird form exuding an air of elegance and power. Koneko's eyes narrowed.
"Shiro, who's that?" she asked, her tone calm but laced with suspicion.
"M-my familiar," I stammered, feeling the weight of her scrutiny.
Koneko's gaze turned sharp. "Oh? And what exactly is she?"
Frost, noticing my hesitation, transformed smoothly into her majestic bird form, her icy feathers glinting like crystal under the dim light. I quickly activated Observe to gather more information.
