Ascendancy of the Jade Clan

Chapter 7: The Herbalist Request

The gates of Feng City loomed ahead, their weathered stone arches standing as a testament to the city's age and resilience. The bustling sounds of merchants hawking their wares, children laughing, and the clatter of carts filled the air as Li Chen and Kai approached. The city was a stark contrast to the quiet forest they had traveled through, its energy vibrant and chaotic. Yet, as they stepped through the gates, Li Chen couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. The Golden Cloud Sect's influence was everywhere, their golden insignias emblazoned on banners around the city.

Kai glanced at Li Chen, his expression grim. "We need money. Fast. If we're going to lay low and gather resources, we can't afford to draw attention."

Li Chen nodded, his amber eyes scanning the crowded streets. "Agreed. Let's find a tavern. Mercenary work should be easy enough for us."

The two made their way through the winding streets, eventually finding a modest tavern tucked into a corner of the city. The sign above the door read The Drunken Crane, its paint faded but still legible. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of ale and roasted meat. Mercenaries and travelers filled the tables, their voices rising in a cacophony of laughter and argument.

Li Chen and Kai approached the notice board near the bar, where scraps of parchment were pinned with various job postings. Most were mundane—escort missions, pest control, and the occasional bounty. But one caught their eye:

"Escort Needed: Herbalist seeks protection for a journey to the abandoned fort north of Feng City. Payment negotiable. Inquire at Mei's Herbalist Shop in the eastern district."

Kai raised an eyebrow. "An abandoned fort? Sounds like trouble."

Li Chen studied the notice, his expression thoughtful. "It's a good opportunity. If we're quick, we can earn some coin and stay under the radar."

Kai shrugged. "Your call. But if there's something nasty waiting for us, don't say I didn't warn you."

Mei's Herbalist Shop

The herbalist shop was a small, unassuming building nestled in the eastern district. The scent of dried herbs and flowers wafted through the air as Li Chen and Kai stepped inside. Shelves lined the walls, filled with jars of powders, roots, and dried plants. A young woman stood behind the counter, her hands busy grinding something in a mortar. She looked up as they entered, her eyes bright and curious.

"Welcome! How can I help you?" she asked, her voice cheerful.

Li Chen stepped forward, holding up the notice. "We're here about the escort job. My name's Li Chen, and this is Kai."

The woman's face lit up with relief. "Oh, thank the heavens! I was starting to think no one would take the job. I'm Mei Ling, but you can call me Mei." She set down the mortar and wiped her hands on her apron, which was stained with various shades of green and brown. Her dark hair was tied back in a loose braid, and her eyes sparkled with a kind of eccentric energy that made her seem both approachable and slightly unpredictable.

Kai crossed his arms, his tone skeptical. "Why's everyone avoiding this job? What's so dangerous about an abandoned fort?"

Mei's expression turned serious. "It's not the fort itself. It's the bears. A pack of them has taken over the area. Most of them are normal, but there's one… a red-eyed bear. It's massive, aggressive, and unlike anything I've ever seen. People say it's cursed."

Li Chen exchanged a glance with Kai. "Cursed or not, we can handle it. What's so important about this herb you're after?"

Mei's eyes sparkled with excitement. "It's called the Moonlit Blossom. It only grows in places with strong spiritual energy, and the fort is one of the few places nearby where it can be found. It's essential for a remedy I'm developing—one that could save lives."

Kai raised an eyebrow. "You're risking your neck for a flower?"

Mei smiled, undeterred. "It's not just a flower. It's a chance to make a difference. Besides, I've been preparing for this. I have some tricks up my sleeve."

Li Chen nodded, his respect for her growing. "Alright. We'll take the job. When do we leave?"

"First thing tomorrow," Mei said, her enthusiasm returning. "Meet me here at dawn. And don't worry—I'll make sure you're well compensated."

The Journey to the Fort

The next morning, the trio set out from Feng City, the rising sun casting long shadows across the road. Mei led the way, her steps light and confident despite the danger ahead. She carried a satchel filled with herbs and tools, her knowledge of the land evident as she pointed out various plants along the way.

"That's Silverleaf," she said, gesturing to a plant with shimmering leaves. "It's great for treating burns. And over there—that's Nightshade. Deadly if ingested, but in small doses, it can numb pain."

Li Chen watched her with interest, his curiosity piqued. Elder Ming's voice echoed in his mind, low and thoughtful. "This girl… she has a special physique. Her connection to plants is unnatural. Watch her closely."

As they walked, Li Chen struck up a conversation with Mei. "How did you become an herbalist?"

Mei's smile softened, her eyes distant. "My mother taught me. She was an herbalist too, and she believed that every plant had a purpose, even the ones others called weeds. She always said I'd be the perfect herbalist—it was almost like I could speak to the plants." She paused, her expression turning wistful. "When she passed away, I decided to carry on her work. It's my way of honoring her."

Kai, walking a few steps behind, grunted. "Sounds noble. But it doesn't explain why you're so eager to risk your life for a flower."

Mei laughed, the sound light and melodic. "I suppose it doesn't. But sometimes, you have to take risks to achieve something meaningful. Don't you think?"

As they continued, Mei suddenly stopped, her eyes widening as she spotted a peculiar plant growing by the side of the path. Its leaves were a deep, iridescent green, and its flowers glowed faintly in the shade of a large tree. "Wait," she said, her voice filled with awe. "That's a Spiritbloom. They're incredibly rare. I've only read about them in my mother's journals."

She knelt beside the plant, her hands hovering just above its leaves. As she closed her eyes, something extraordinary happened. The plant seemed to respond to her presence, its leaves curling slightly toward her as if reaching out. The faint glow of its flowers intensified, casting a soft light on her face.

Li Chen and Kai exchanged a glance, their expressions a mix of surprise and curiosity. "What's happening?" Kai asked, his voice low.

Mei opened her eyes, her expression one of quiet wonder. "It's… it's like the plant is communicating with me. My mother always said I had a special connection to nature, but I never fully believed it until now."

Elder Ming's voice echoed in Li Chen's mind, filled with intrigue. "She has a Wood Spirit Physique—a rare gift that allows her to commune with plants and draw strength from them. This girl could be a powerful ally."

Li Chen nodded, his respect for Mei deepening. She was more than just an eccentric herbalist; she was someone with a unique and valuable talent. "That's incredible," he said, his tone genuine. "Your mother was right. You're not just an herbalist—you're something much more."

Mei smiled, her cheeks flushing slightly. "Thank you. I've always felt a connection to plants, but I never thought it was anything special. Maybe… maybe this is why I'm meant to find the Moonlit Blossom."

The Abandoned Fort

By midday, they reached the abandoned fort. Its crumbling walls were overgrown with vines, and the air was thick with the scent of damp earth and decay. The silence was unnerving, broken only by the occasional rustle of leaves in the wind.

As they approached the entrance, a low growl echoed from within. Li Chen drew the sword he had taken from the bandits, its blade gleaming in the sunlight. Kai unsheathed his own weapon, his expression grim. Mei stayed close behind them, her hands clutching her satchel.

The first bear emerged from the shadows, its fur matted and its eyes wild. It charged at them with a roar, but Li Chen was ready. He sidestepped the attack, his sword slicing through the air with precision. The bear fell, its body collapsing to the ground.

More bears appeared, their growls filling the air. Kai fought alongside Li Chen, his movements swift and efficient. Together, they dispatched the weaker bears, their teamwork seamless.

But then, the ground shook. A massive bear emerged from the fort, its fur a deep black and its eyes glowing red. The red-eyed bear let out a deafening roar, its presence overwhelming.

Mei's voice trembled. "That's it… the cursed bear."

Li Chen tightened his grip on his sword, his qi flaring as he prepared for the fight. Right before he was about to strike Elder Ming's voice whispered "That's a spiritual beast, the first you've encountered, it seems to be around... mid-qi awakening, you can handle it" he said almost nonchalantly before going silent again.
