Chapter 23: Claiming the Keep
Chapter 23: Claiming the Keep
The tension in Raventhorn Keep slowly eased as the bandits processed their leader's surrender. The fortress, once a place of disorder and lawless rule, now belonged to Kael and his growing rebellion. The victory was hard-won, but there was no time to celebrate—not yet.
Kael turned to the assembled warriors, his voice carrying across the courtyard. "This is no longer a den for outlaws. From this day forward, it is a stronghold for those who refuse to kneel before the gods."
The bandits exchanged uncertain glances, but their leader—wounded yet standing—nodded. "You heard him. If you want to live like scavengers, you can leave. But if you want a real chance, a real fight, then you stay and follow Kael."
A few muttered among themselves, some considering walking away, but most remained. Kael had proven himself stronger, and in their world, strength commanded loyalty.
Darius clapped a hand on Kael's shoulder, grinning. "That was one hell of a fight. If you keep this up, people might actually start calling you king."
Kael shook his head. "I'm no king, Darius. Just a man who refuses to bow."
Selene stepped forward, arms crossed. "Then it's time to act like one. We won a fortress, but that means nothing if we can't hold it. The gods won't ignore this. The moment they learn we've taken Raventhorn Keep, they'll send something worse than divine wardens."
Varian nodded from the shadows. "She's right. We need defenses, supplies, and a plan before they come knocking."
Kael glanced at the keep's worn stone walls. It had been abandoned for a reason—crumbling battlements, broken gates, and scavenged armory. But the structure was still formidable. It could be rebuilt. Strengthened.
"Then we start now," Kael said. "Darius, take the strongest fighters and begin reinforcing the walls. Selene, see what supplies we have left and what we'll need. Varian, send scouts. I want to know if anyone—god or mortal—is heading our way."
They nodded and moved to their tasks. The keep was theirs, but war was coming. Kael had won the battle for Raventhorn Keep. Now, he had to ensure it would stand against the wrath of the heavens.
