Chapter 5: Chapter 5: Limit
'I can see why Jujutsu sorcerers were always a bit unhinged mentally!'
Snapping back to reality, I realized everyone was staring at me. Artemis looked shocked, along with Sir Cow Douche (my nickname for Cow Mask). I didn't care much, instead focusing on the fact that I could channel my cursed energy through my hair as well.
'This could be useful for counterattacks!'
A fox-masked woman came charging at me, and I decided to test my discovery. Controlling the energy as best as I could, I hardened about a sixth of my hair—that was all I could manage—and sent it toward her. She swung her longsword in a wide arc, but the rigid blade lacked flexibility. My hair disregarded her attempt at an attack entirely.
"BLERGH!"
My hardened hair felt like iron as it pierced straight through her stomach. I pulled my cursed hair—
'Cursed Hair. I like that name.'
[Skill Created: Cursed Hair level 1; +1 skill point]
I decided to keep it even the system liked it. Anyway, with a swing of my hair, I launched her body back into the forest.
[Notice: Low on Energy]
"Seriously?" I muttered.
In my peripherals, I caught some people flinching, though I had no idea why. Not that I cared—I had bigger problems to deal with.
[Cursed Energy: 150/400]
'Is it because of my lack of control?'
In the stories I had read back on Earth, most hinted that control was a crucial factor in power or at the very least, in survival.
I cut the energy flow to my hair, halting its circulation. As the strands fell back into place, I watched them calmly—the sickly dark green of my cursed energy blending with the natural light green of my hair. It was a striking contrast, a deadly elegance. Lethal, yet beautiful.
When I refocused my attention, everyone was staring at me in fear. Cocking my head to the side, I silently questioned them.
"Y-You monster!" Sir Cow Douche screamed, his voice quivering and his body visibly shaking. Through the mask, his eyes—though barely noticeable—stared at me in disbelief.
Again, I didn't understand what was so shocking about my display. Wasn't it normal to kill your enemies? Even if this was my first time, I knew that if I didn't take them down, they'd come for me. Though, I had to admit, the quest to protect Artemis was definitely fueling my desire to help.
Hearing Sir Cow Douche's scream, I glanced at Artemis—the only one here with any real guts. She just stared at me, more in disbelief than fear, though I could tell she looked a little relieved.
'See? This is how one should react!' I thought as I started moving.
Tap~
I started walking toward two other masked enemies. I didn't have enough energy left to deal with Sir Cow Douche—I could feel it—so I decided to take out two more of his allies instead.
I tightened my hands into a sword-like form, channeling Cursed Energy to harden them and give them the necessary boost.
"N-N-N-NO!"
Bird Mask and Cat Mask—one male, one female—were my next targets. Bird Mask screamed in fear and bolted, leaving Cat Mask frozen beside him. She didn't even retaliate when I drove my hand straight through her chest.
Bird Mask didn't even try to hide as he ran, branches snapping and leaves crunching beneath his frantic steps. His screams never stopped, echoing through the forest, accompanied by the violent rustling of bushes. It was surreal especially compared to Cat Mask, who hadn't even made a sound
'Hehe, I wonder if he decided to scream for her? More importantly, is a paralysis effect caused by Cursed Energy?'
The more I used it, the more I learned—beyond what I already knew from the manga and anime. Sure, it was probably mentioned or even shown somewhere, but it wasn't something I specifically remembered. Most people in Jujutsu Kaisen didn't get scared off by Cursed Energy itself, but rather by specific types or overwhelming presences.
I'm sure I brought it before, but in Shibuya, for example, people only felt true terror when Sukuna's presence flooded the area.
Anyway.
I glanced at the system screen.
[Cursed Energy: 75/400]
"Tch." I clicked my tongue, aggravation oozing from my body. Without another word, I walked back toward Artemis, reclaiming my spot beside her.
Turning to Rethusa, I caught her attention. "Rethusa, you got the rest?"
She gave me a weird look, the fear in her eyes swapping out for something else; annoyance, maybe? If this were an anime, I could've sworn there'd be a red tick mark on her forehead.
"Shut up, bastard!"
"Wow~!" Whistling playfully, I glanced over at Artemis. "She sure has your temper. Is she your long-lost child or something?"
"Pfft~, in a way, I guess you could say that." She covered her mouth with a hand but that couldn't hide the little shakes her body gave. Especially for a woman who was as objectively beautiful as her.
I blanked. I couldn't even form my own thoughts. She had actually laughed. She didn't fucking curse me out.
"What?" It didn't last long before my silence killed it.
Shrugging my shoulders, I replied, "Nothing~ Nothing~."
"I doubt that, Enkidu, you cursed idiot."
"Seems someone is opening up slowly!"
"Shut it. I just trust you a bit more."
"I doubt that, Artemis, you heavenly dumbass!"
"God, you're so vulgar!"
"Why are you using your name in vain?" I cocked my head to the side. Though I knew what she meant, I had to say it.
"You are so insufferable!" She stopped messing around with me and instead turned her attention back to the ongoing standstill. Our playful atmosphere definitely didn't match the tension hanging over everything else.
