Chapter 69: Chapter 69
The meeting was held on a rock half a kilometer from the shore. We'd swum for about an hour by water and then, after running over land, we were there. Except Aang wasn't there. No one knew where he was. I had to come up with a plan where I would be the one to overthrow Ozai. If Aang showed up, good. If Aang didn't show up, fine too. Except I had to prove to Azula that I wasn't going to die. Soka, who'd gotten involved, got a slap from Azula and lay down for half an hour.
That's how long our fight lasted, and at the end of it, I healed him and he woke up. While we were arguing, the comet began to approach and my firepower began to increase. Slowly, but I could feel it clearly. We didn't know exactly where Ozai would appear.
Only the approximate direction. In order to make it in time, everyone who could be trusted had been placed at certain points. I was chosen for two reasons. I'm strong enough and I can make it in time. All that remained was to wait.
Two hours later the signal came. The airships were sighted a hundred kilometers to the north. That's where I took off. Thirty minutes and I'm in position to observe the armada of ships. They're still over the sea, but when they reach land, the power of the mages will be at its peak. Soon, Appa and his boys arrived. Azula was with them, wearing only a mask so she wouldn't be recognized.
While I waited for them, I was able to look around. A few kilometers from the sea, there was a huge array of stone pillars. An interesting landmark, so I sat down and waited. And I waited. As soon as the ships hit land, the mages unleashed huge jets of magic.
The ships began to spread out, trying to take in as much of the area as possible. In the center was an airship, twice the size of the others, with the strongest jet of flame.
When the central airship got close enough, I cut off a huge piece of rock and launched it. The chunk was large, so it damaged it enough to make it fall. But I saw Ozai. Big guy.
Turns out the comet doesn't improve mages. Not at all. Rather, it increases the concentration of fire magic in the air. It helps you replenish your reserves quickly, which makes you seem more powerful. Also, because there is a lot of fire magic in the air, mages subconsciously use it to increase the power of their techniques. That's the secret of fire mage enhancement. Theoretically, this could be done with any kind of magic.
But I digress. Ozai, without waiting for his airship to fall, rushed at me with jet propulsion, and as he flew up, he unleashed a huge stream of magic at me. I, not being a fool, wrapped myself in a rock and fell down. And started running away from Ozai, annoying him all the way. I used the same technique I used to smash the Iron Man. I sent a big rock on one side and a small one on the other. When he hit the big one, he'd hit the small one on the head. It wasn't fatal, but it hurt.
So I ran around and hit him, and I got the timing right for a head-to-head. After I did the rock trick, instead of jumping to the side, I jumped at Ozai. And as I was flying, I landed a blow to his face. He flew down and rolled a few dozen meters, at the end of the jet propulsion again. I tried to control him with blood, but he absorbed too much energy, so it didn't work.
I didn't want to run anymore. I was bored. So I jumped off the cliff and ran towards him. He did the same. When we were about fifty meters away, we both broke into a run.
Focus. Thirty meters. A stream of fire to hit him. A pulse and a wedge of compression at the center. Keep running. The stream intensified, the wedge blown away. Impulse. I jump and dive underground. Impulse and I spiral, closing in on him at breakneck speed. Impulse and I fly out of the ground, right next to him.
The armor gave me a moment, which was all I needed. I grab his face. I pull him towards me. His legs kick and fly up. And with all my strength, I slam his head into the ground. The ground is soft, so his head is intact and he's alive. The momentum lifts him off the ground. A turn and a series of quick blows. Magic blocked. And release the hold.
And taunt, how could I not? I slapped his cheeks to bring him to his senses. He tried to send a stream of fire at me, but there wasn't even a spit.
«It didn't work?» I asked, feigning surprise, «Try again.»
He tried. The result was the same.
«Maybe the rack is wrong?»
He tried one, a second, a third. Nothing worked. And then he created a lightning. And surprisingly, it worked. That's when I got scared. There's no way to stop it. Or interrupt it.
It's too far away and too fast. Block it? I can't do that either. No armor. I can't deflect like Zuko. Fucking bitch.
A bolt of lightning flew off his finger and towards me. The world slowed down. I can't dodge or block. If it even hit me with an edge, I died. To do something, I began to create fire, concentrating it on the flight path.
My body wouldn't move and the fire wouldn't build. But I tried, squeezing everything out of me, but concentrating. Every tongue of flame was important to me. I wanted to survive and live with all my being.
Gradually, a small ball began to appear. It grew as the lightning approached. When the lightning was half a meter away from me, the ball became as thick as lightning. Without wasting any time, I launched it.
The next thing I knew, time returned to its usual course. An explosion. To save my eyes, I closed my eyelids. That's all I had time for. The next thing I knew, I was blown away by the explosion. I flew a long way. About a hundred meters, I realized when I stopped.
The good news was that I was alive. What I wasn't happy about was the broken arms, legs and ribs. And the pain all over my body. Now I couldn't heal myself and all I could do was watch as Ozai created another bolt of lightning.
«Die!» he cry.
And lightning coming right at me, the damn sniper.
