Became the Imperial-Certified Mad Dog

Chapter 7 - The Culprit Erases the Evidence

The Culprit Erases the Evidence

‘Ah, that was a good meal~’

Despite being late to my own welcome party, the servants were all such nice people that no one got angry with me.

Even though slightly cold, the food from the kitchen was still delicious with its faint remaining warmth, and everyone showed me warm hospitality and interest.

Not only did I make a good first impression on the butler, but I was also the youngest here after Peri, and it seems Karma’s subtle mention of me coming due to my parents’ debt earned me some sympathy.

‘Well, it’s not entirely wrong, so I guess there’s no need to correct it.’

As the butler said, this mansion seems to be a good place that treats its servants as proper members. If I had gotten a normal job, I might have considered spending my whole life here.

‘…So I start working properly tomorrow, hah…’

I ended up taking this on suddenly, or rather, I had no choice but to take it, but I’ve barely even watched over anyone in my life, let alone acted as a guard.

Everything grandfather taught me was how to break things, how to chase, and how to run away, never how to protect.

‘Given that old man’s personality, I doubt he ever watched over anyone either.’

He probably knocked people out and carried them away while claiming to protect them.

Knock, knock.

While I was removing and rewrapping my bandages, which had become loose and bloody from my intense movement while escaping from the guards, someone knocked on my door.

‘Who is it?’

Living alone for a month had made me instinctively tense up at such sudden visits.

But thinking about it, I wasn’t living alone in this house anymore, and since I hadn’t received anything except clothes yet, it wasn’t strange at all for someone to visit.

‘…’

Knock knock.

‘Excuse me, who is it?’

Knock knock.

But when there’s no answer to my question and only parrot-like knocking sounds return, isn’t it reasonable to be cautious even in someone else’s house?

‘…’

There were servants around my age at the dinner table earlier – could this be some kind of prank?

‘Hah…’

I’m young too and I didn’t dislike such pranks, but maybe because I’d seen too much blood recently, I only felt tired at the thought of having to play along.

‘Yes, I’m coming~’

Creak.

‘What could it be at this hour…?’

‘Um, it really is…!’

The unexpected visitor’s head was lower than mine, the youngest in the house, and when I opened the door, what I saw first was a crown of snow-white hair.

As I lowered my gaze slowly, I could see her face – a girl who was shrinking like a rabbit while still maintaining an expectant gaze that was almost burdensome – it was Peri, whom I was supposed to protect starting today.

‘Um, do you… remember me? You saved me this morning…’
