Chapter 24 - Monster of the Frontier (4)
“It’s too late to run away now! Fight to the end, rather than dying shamefully.”
Bekins didn’t lose his fighting spirit even in this situation.
Although it’s hard to say he handled things well, he still had some spirit.
But in the end, what matters isn’t the mindset but the result. No matter how well they fight, no matter how splendidly they meet their end, they’ll all be digested as our nutrients anyway, so what does it matter?
“Cast defensive spells! Reinforcements will surely come from nearby!”
Still, Bekins’ spirit seemed to give some strength to those around him.
They, who had essentially become the city’s last resistance force, were still trying to hold out somehow with the mages’ spells at the forefront, even now when surrounded by my soldiers who outnumbered them by dozens of times.
The spell was like a huge barrier surrounding them. Blazing flames rose nearly 2M high, but it didn’t seem like simple fire.
I sacrificed a few soldiers to charge, but as soon as they touched the fire, it spread to my soldiers’ bodies, not smothering the flames but rather creating an even higher barrier.
‘Fire mixed with magic power.’
To withstand that fire burning with magic power as fuel, magic power was needed in return.
In other words, Seira and I, the only individuals in the hive with magic power, had to step forward.
But even if Seira alone broke through there, it’s impossible for her to face hundreds of enemies remaining inside by herself.
“Can’t be helped.”
Seeing the enemies blocking even the acidic poison shot by our soldiers by summoning strong winds, I smiled bitterly.
It seemed I had to take action directly this time.
“What do you plan to do?”
“I’ll break through that defensive spell and open a path, so Seira, you charge in with the soldiers.”
It’s not that I didn’t have a plan. Smirking at Seira’s words, I spread both arms and slowly awakened the omnipotent cells that composed my entire body.
[If you push too hard, the cells will collapse]
“I know my body best.”
The system message started warning at the same time, but I ignored it. From my perspective, with the power I have now, this much was certainly possible.
“Hm…”
As all the cells in my body rapidly divided, my size grew.
Starting from the skin tissue, the cells melted and writhed, dividing and simultaneously beginning to change into a new form.
It felt as if my entire body had slipped into the body of another organism.
Using all the genetic information we had absorbed and analyzed so far, I composed the body with the strongest fire resistance.

“Wh-what on earth is that.”
The sight of one of the monsters surrounding them on all sides undergoing mutation became visible even to the city survivors and Bekins.
Bekins, whose throat was starting to get hoarse, muttered blankly as he saw it.
Under the dark night sky, among countless monsters, the one that suddenly started growing looked like a huge plant with countless writhing tentacles covering its entire body.
But what gradually began to reveal itself was a huge chimera with a size comparable to a dump truck.
Its entire body was covered in thick exoskeleton, and its long, thick two arms had huge pincers attached.
But the pincers weren’t all. Four legs protruding from the shoulders and back moved freely like spider legs, long and pointed, and the sturdy hind legs resembled those of a toad or frog.
Those who witnessed such a grotesque monster growing in real-time before their eyes couldn’t help but be shocked.
“It-it’s coming! It’s coming!”
Soon, the queen, having completed her mutation, began running across the ground, making the earth rumble with her huge body.
As if the defensive spell that had already burned and killed many troops meant nothing, she charged straight in, trusting her massive body and thick exoskeleton.
“It’s broken through!”
Befitting that momentum, the defensive spell made of blazing flames was breached too easily.
The queen, who broke through the flames, crushed the defensive spell with her body and swung her huge pincers, instantly crushing a hobgoblin knight who tried to block her.
“Bl-block them! They’re pushing in!”
With their trusted defensive spell breached, the survivors no longer had the option to hold out.
They had to engage in a desperate, possibly final battle against the monsters pouring in through the path the queen had personally opened in the defensive spell.
“You…! You must be the leader!”
Bekins, gritting his teeth, joined the battle directly.
He swung his staff to cast a spell, shooting magic bullets at the queen who was crushing the defensive spell with her body.
Seeing the queen crushing the magic-reinforced defensive spell with her body, he was certain that the queen, now transformed into a massive monster, was the leader of the legion.
[Part of body destroyed]
Bekins’ magic bullet hit the queen’s shoulder area, exploding and destroying part of her body.
But the queen, who attacked Bekins by extending the spider-like legs protruding from her shoulders, showed no sign of suffering even as one of her arms was torn off.
“You monster…”
Bekins, clutching the thick leg that had pierced his leg and abdomen, panted and then gritted his teeth, squeezing out his last bit of willpower. He still had one final strike prepared.
The magic bullet he fired, even if just for a suicide attack, this time hit the face, which must be a vital point.
‘Just what are you?’
However, even as the part that looked like a face was shattered, spraying flesh and bodily fluids, that huge body didn’t collapse.
Bekins, his vision starting to blur, let out a small sigh as he saw a silver-haired woman with glowing red eyes looking at him from within the giant monster’s shattered and melting flesh.
[City of Luen fallen, no survivors remaining, allied casualties about 5,100]
“From what I can see, it seems over half died just from the turrets.”
After the intense battle ended, all that remained in the city now were corpses piled high on the ground and silence.
The only survivors were those who escaped. Those who couldn’t escape, those who resisted to the end. All were brutally killed.
“My Queen. It seems none of the wounded have survived. The neurotoxin sprayed everywhere and its poisonous vapors are too fatal for the injured.”
“Can’t be helped. We’ll have to catch others separately to extract information.”
Seira, having removed her mask, approached the queen who was shedding the huge body hastily put together for one night of battle.
Covered in sticky bodily fluids, the queen, who had returned to her original form by slicing open the abdomen of the huge body as if taking off clothes, smirked at the discarded flesh.
Although it was just a molted skin, if digested as nutrients, it could recover some of the resources consumed.
“Now is the time to harvest the spoils. We’ll make a new nest in this city.”
She raised the corners of her mouth, looking at the air. Even if it’s a small frontier city, Luen was clearly territory ruled by demon realm forces.
If we waged war against such a place and won, the rewards must be tremendous.
And the corpses and nutrients scattered everywhere weren’t the only rewards.
‘It’s certain. With this war, we evolve another step.’
Because right now, in the screen only she could see, rewards were pouring down.
“How do you feel? The taste of personally tearing apart those who sold you to the goblins.”
“…It’s absolutely ecstatic.”
Although she killed Bekins, far more demon race individuals died to Seira’s spear as she rushed in with the soldiers.
Seira’s body twitched as she recalled that moment. She’s a bit calmer now, but at that time, Seira was literally a berserk warrior gone mad.
She had never experienced it even once as a noble, but she thought this might be how vampires felt when they finally fell to corruption after craving blood.
‘I want to fight more, even now.’
Seira, faintly raising the corners of her mouth, no longer denied it.
The fact that she had been completely reborn as a new being after joining the legion as if by fate. Just as vampires crave blood, craving war and slaughter was only natural as a member of the legion and the queen’s knight.
“But my Queen, if I may be so bold, I think we should carefully consider making a new nest in this city.”
“Afraid of retaliation?”
“Yes. The power of those who form proper forces in the demon realm far surpasses the level of a mere city.”
Having decided to fully dedicate even her heart to the legion now, Seira spoke her thoughts directly to the queen without any fear.
In Seira’s view, the queen was no ordinary living being. She meant that the queen couldn’t be evaluated or determined by the common sense she had when she was an ordinary demon race.
Also, she thought the queen might not fully understand the principles of the demon realm and the ecology of demon races.
After all, she was a being who had grown up only in the northern forest since birth.
“I know that too.”
However, contrary to Seira’s thoughts, the queen smiled, saying she knew what Seira was worried about. Although things change every time, there are still quite a few fixed elements when enjoying the game.
