Chapter 480: Chapter 480: The Lone Hero Saving the Three Lions
After a moment of silence, Sunday informed William that the attackers were retreating and asked if he wanted to deploy the fully armed commando unit and the Black Blade drones, which were lying in wait outside the cathedral. William immediately declined—if anyone realized he had backup on standby, his lone hero act would lose its dramatic effect.
This setup was ideal: he had come personally, put himself in danger, and saved hundreds of people. Tomorrow, he would undoubtedly be hailed worldwide.
However, William still instructed Sunday to use the Black Blade drones to eliminate any snipers who might pose a real threat to him.
"Understood, sir."
Seconds later, Sunday reported back, "The last sniper has been neutralized, and both the spiders and the Black Blade drones are now tracking the retreating insurgents."
"Good," William said thoughtfully. "Send the commandos to guard the estate. Activate the missile defense systems at the castle and estate, and notify Antonov in Oxford Castle to stay alert for any suspicious individuals. Also, have the Oxford Town Police patrol around the castle."
"Orders have been issued, sir. The castle and estate defenses have been active since last night. Rest assured, Lady Lina and Miss Abigail are safe as long as they remain within the estate."
William nodded, then asked, "Good. Has Ambrose reached Brazil yet?"
"Miss Ambrose is currently in transit, expected to arrive in approximately three hours." After a brief pause, Sunday continued with additional news, "Mr. Carlos from the Cross organization has reported that he's ready to take down Amir Bakavi. Sir, shall we proceed?"
A voice called out to William from a short distance behind him. William, already aware of their presence, turned and gestured for them to wait. After a moment's thought, he replied to Sunday, "Hold off for now. Tell Carlos to eliminate Amir Bakavi only if he senses any risk of losing control; otherwise, wait for my command."
"Understood, sir," Sunday replied a few seconds later. "Mr. Carlos has acknowledged the instructions."
William finally addressed the bodyguard standing nearby. "What's the matter?"
"Mr. Devonshire, Richard and Minister Catherine would like to meet with you to discuss the next steps."
"What next steps?" William asked, confused. "Shouldn't the London police or other specialized units handle the rest?"
At the mention of the London police, the bodyguard's face twisted with a hint of bitterness. Seeing William's curious expression, he quickly composed himself and explained, "No one trusts the London police at the moment. If they hadn't been infiltrated by the insurgents—or worse, had traitors within their ranks—we wouldn't have lost over twenty colleagues right from the start."
"Alright, lead the way," William replied.
It was evident that this incident would have serious repercussions, with certain individuals facing severe consequences or even disappearing quietly. Although the situation was not directly William's concern, he couldn't help but feel some satisfaction, knowing that future dealings might be easier with the right incentives.
As he followed the bodyguard downstairs with his AWM in hand, he passed men and women with faces full of fear coming up from the underground levels. When they saw William holding a sniper rifle, the men looked on in shock, while some of the women covered their mouths or gasped his name.
Nodding in acknowledgment to familiar and unfamiliar faces alike, William eventually entered a room where a shaken Catherine and several other cabinet ministers were waiting.
"William!" Catherine rushed over to embrace him, offering heartfelt thanks as she released him.
"Relax, you're all safe now," William reassured her with a smile. "If you're still uneasy, I could take you to my estate for some refuge."
"Really? Is that possible?" Catherine asked eagerly.
"Of course. We're friends," William affirmed with a nod.
"If it's possible, would you mind taking us as well, Mr. Devonshire?" asked an older man with gray hair standing a few feet away.
Recognizing the man from television, William recalled he was Defense Minister Richard. William hadn't initially identified him by voice, as they'd never interacted before.
"No problem. I'd be happy to host you all at my home," William replied with a smile.
"Thank you," Richard said, but he soon shook his head. "Unfortunately, hiding out until this is over isn't an option for us. Once things settle here, we'll need to head to the underground command center on Downing Street, or we won't be able to contain the chaos outside."
"So I hope you'll escort us there. As the only minister left to fulfill the late James's responsibilities, I need to order troops from outside London to enter the city, restore order, and clear out all the insurgents."
Richard and the other ministers looked at William expectantly.
"No problem," William agreed.
He had already saved them, so escorting them to Downing Street to help restore order would ultimately benefit him as well.
"However, while we're on the move, you must follow my directions. Until we reach Downing Street, I'll determine the route, when to stop, and when to move. Otherwise, I'm afraid I'll have to decline."
"Understood. You're the expert on operations; we'll follow your lead," Catherine quickly agreed, and after a moment, the others did as well.
With the plan settled, Richard instructed his team to prepare vehicles. Once the security detail confirmed the cars were ready, Richard and the ministers stepped out to reassure the still-nervous nobility and officials within the cathedral before quietly escorting the cabinet members and their bodyguards into three vehicles.
William climbed into his dented Aston Martin DB9, accompanied by Catherine and the insistent Richard.
The convoy left the cathedral, and rather than taking the shortest route, William, following Sunday's guidance, led them in the opposite direction.
With Black Blade drones providing aerial surveillance, and a trailing vehicle prepared to shoot out any persistent pursuers' tires, the convoy's stop-and-go journey stretched a typically ten-minute drive to over an hour before they finally reached Downing Street.
Here, William's job was finished. Not wanting to enter Downing Street and risk entanglements, he stopped the car at the checkpoint just outside and turned to Catherine and Richard.
"All right, my task is complete. The rest is up to you."
"Thank you." Richard, relieved now that they'd reached their destination, expressed his gratitude sincerely. "William, we will remember what you've done for England. You can call on me for anything in the future."
"Take care of the present situation first," William replied.
While Richard's words sounded earnest now, William knew all too well that promises like these could fade with time. Besides, many of the current cabinet members might soon be removed from their positions. William wasn't planning to keep this favor pending for long and already had specific ideas for how he would use it.
Watching Richard and his team enter Downing Street, William turned his car around and headed back to his estate.
