Chapter 491: Chapter 492: Escaping in Plain Sight
Everyone understood what Banning meant—he simply didn't want Benjamin exposed to danger. All eyes in the command center turned to William, including Bromley, who was standing beside him. Ignoring Banning's silent plea, William smiled calmly and stated, "This is England, gentlemen. Here, we make the decisions."
This single sentence hardened the resolve of everyone present. Banning quickly countered, "You have no authority to command anyone here."
"No, he does have the authority," a female voice suddenly announced, and everyone turned to see Catherine and several ministers appearing on the large screen.
"From this moment on, we officially authorize Earl William Devonshire to handle this London attack," said Richard, the Minister of Defense, with a stern expression directed at William. "You have eleven hours—until 6 a.m. tomorrow. By then, we want all of London to be under control. Otherwise, the outer military forces will enter the city, and that's a situation none of us want to face."
"No problem," William replied, nodding. If the large military force entered London, it would mean disaster for Richard and his colleagues, likely resulting in their political downfall and endless scrutiny in the future.
Seeing that William was willing to take the risk of using Benjamin as bait to wipe out all the attackers in one blow, Richard and the others had no choice but to take a chance. If they could truly eliminate all the threats tonight, they'd have the confidence to face any criticisms the next day.
As the call ended, Catherine gave William a meaningful nod, which didn't go unnoticed by Bromley. Seeing this, William leaned over and whispered, "The credit for this goes to you. Any issues with that?"
"None at all," Bromley replied with a sly smile. "Don't worry. I'll make sure this place is secured and no one gets in or out."
William nodded and handed Bromley an earpiece. "Sunday will handle all the tactical commands. Your focus should be on finding any more moles with Jacqueline."
"Understood," Bromley nodded.
William knew he wasn't an expert in command strategy, and he wasn't interested in micromanaging. Besides, for a limited area battlefield like this, Sunday's AI capabilities made the job almost trivial. With 500 spider bots on the ground, 12 Black Blade drones in the sky, and Sunday's processing power, William was confident they could annihilate every attacker with minimal or even zero losses on their side, though expecting zero injuries was likely too optimistic.
With command delegated, William said to Sunday, "After I leave, keep full surveillance here. Log every move."
"Understood, sir."
William approached Benjamin, only for Banning to grab him by the collar before he could speak.
William spread his hands and said, "Gentlemen, I'm taking you to the safe room. Your job is to stay there quietly while we handle the rest."
Benjamin, serious, held back Banning and nodded to William. "Thank you, Mr. Devonshire. I'll remember this once it's over."
"It's no big deal, Mr. Prime Minister," William replied, shrugging nonchalantly. He led the two men into the elevator, pressing every button several times and then holding the "1" button for ten seconds. After passing the first floor, the elevator continued downward, finally stopping after several seconds as the doors opened automatically.
William stepped out first, scanning the surroundings before signaling Benjamin and Banning to follow. He led them through a maze of hallways, taking several turns before stopping at a door. He knocked in a sequence that played the melody of "God Save the Queen." In response, they heard three short and two long knocks from inside.
Entering the code, William opened the door to find Barney and Christmas in their full combat gear, both outfitted in Devonshire Mark II armor. "Boss, Prime Minister," they greeted.
William nodded. "Are we all set?"
"Yes, boss. Per your instructions, we've made contact with Harry Hart from Kingsman. It's a two-minute walk from here, just around the corner, to his tailor shop. Mr. Hart is waiting there for you."
"Excellent," William said with a smile, turning to Benjamin. "Prime Minister, just two more minutes, and you'll be completely safe."
Walking back out onto the street made Benjamin a bit tense. "Understood."
Barney led the way as the group emerged on street level. By 7 p.m. in October, it was already completely dark in London, and with the power cut to residents and streetlights alike, the street was shrouded in darkness, adding a foreboding atmosphere.
Seeing William's group coming up, the other members of the Expendables on guard duty scanned the surroundings before nodding. "It's clear, boss."
"Alright," William replied, knowing that spider bots and drones had thoroughly scanned the streets and nearby buildings. If anything had been wrong, Sunday would have alerted him.
As they moved down the street, gunfire erupted from the direction of the Anti-Air Command Center a few hundred meters away. Banning instinctively raised his rifle, pointing it down the darkened street.
"Don't worry. We're hundreds of meters away, and this isn't a main street," William reassured him.
"Save it, Devonshire. Who knows what might be lurking in the dark," Banning replied with irritation.
"Alright, let's get going," William said. With Sunday providing navigation and William's own mental scanning abilities, he led the way toward the Kingsman tailor shop. The distant gunfire spurred everyone into a faster pace, and they covered the two-minute route in less than a minute.
Harry Hart spotted the group from a distance, and when he saw William in the lead, he immediately opened the door to the tailor shop, ushering everyone inside.
"Good evening, Prime Minister. I'm Harry Hart from Kingsman. It's an honor to meet you," Harry greeted Benjamin, extending his hand.
"Likewise, Mr. Hart," Benjamin replied, shaking his hand.
"Alright, let's get the Prime Minister to a safe place before anything else," William interjected, cutting off the conversation as he sensed a group of armed men passing down the street on their way to the Anti-Air Command Center.
"Follow me, gentlemen," Harry said, leading Benjamin and Banning into the fitting room.
William instructed them to wait momentarily, then closed the fitting room door. Turning to the Expendables, he said, "You don't need to accompany us for the rest of the way. Your mission now is to monitor Barkawi's remaining two sons at the abandoned building. If the British forces fail, you're to eliminate them both. Understood?"
"Understood, boss."
