Chapter 494: Chapter 495: Dealing with a Super Rogue Requires Vigilance
No explosion?
Amur's plan to perish with the British special forces failed. Nervously, he pressed the detonator several more times, but still, no explosion occurred. Cursing, he was about to check the device when he heard his father Amir Bakawi's frantic voice through his laptop.
"Delete all the data now! I can't afford to be exposed before our revenge is complete!"
Unfortunately, time was running out. The sound of gunfire outside the room was drawing ever closer.
There was no time for Amur to ponder. He quickly picked up his gun and handed a grenade to his subordinate. "Nasser, I'll buy you some time. Once it's done, you know what to do."
Holding the grenade, Nasser, who was in a wheelchair, watched Amur rush out with his gun without even giving him a chance to respond. Nasser then turned to Amir Bakawi on the laptop and said, "Father, you need to leave now. There's not enough time to thoroughly delete all the data. Go."
"I know, I'll go. I'll make sure to avenge you," Amir replied, though his face showed a mix of heartbreak and regret. For once, the merciless Amir Bakawi, who had never hesitated to wipe out entire families, felt a pang of sorrow. He resented his greed for involving him with people he should never have crossed, but his anger toward William was even greater for ruining everything.
"Goodbye, Father," Nasser said, blowing a kiss to Amir before disconnecting the video.
Seething with heartbreak, Amir smashed his laptop repeatedly against the table, screaming, "William Devonshire, Benjamin Arthur, Michael Banning—I want your entire families to join my children in the grave!"
"You won't get the chance."
A low voice echoed from behind Amir. Before he could turn, a pair of hands clamped around his neck and mouth.
"Mr. Devonshire sends his regards. Goodbye, Bakawi," the intruder whispered.
"Wait—no, no, no—" Amir stammered desperately.
Carlos of the Cross tightened his hold, a "crack" sound following shortly.
With his ears keenly tuned, Carlos listened to confirm no one was approaching. Satisfied, he hoisted Amir's lifeless body, collected the shattered laptop, and meticulously erased his traces before disappearing from the room without a trace.
Meanwhile, the battle in London was nearing its end. Despite heavy casualties, the British SAS eliminated Amur Bakawi and the remaining insurgents, who refused to surrender.
When the SAS operatives burst into the room and saw the grenade in Nasser's hands, they immediately opened fire, putting an end to him.
Once the area was secured, one of the operatives skilled in computer forensics noticed that the laptop was in the process of deleting data. He quickly intervened, stopping the deletion and spending nearly an hour digging through the server until he found traces leading to Amir Bakawi. They alerted the Americans immediately, and within seconds, the Americans followed the clues to Colombia, where Bakawi was reportedly hiding.
But the intel that came back was disappointing. Bakawi had vanished. After questioning Bakawi's captured associates, they learned he had abandoned them and fled alone.
This meant the asymmetric war was far from over, and those involved would inevitably face Bakawi's attacks again in the future. The brief sense of victory among American officials quickly dissipated, replaced by a fear that this madman might come after them personally.
Realizing the threat Bakawi still posed, the U.S. leadership began rallying allies, and invitations were extended to every country that had been attacked. Even William, an independent operative, found himself on their list of potential allies.
After consulting with people familiar with William's past work, the Americans didn't hesitate to send him the video of Bakawi's threat. Those who knew him well believed that after viewing the video, William would spare no effort to hunt down Amir Bakawi, who had vowed to kill his entire family.
Indeed, at 3 a.m. London time, just half an hour after receiving the video, rumors spread through the underworld: someone had put a $100 million bounty on Amir Bakawi's head, and substantial rewards of $1 to $5 million were offered for anyone associated with him.
In no time, anyone remotely linked to the Bakawi family became a prime target for assassins worldwide. However, upon investigation, they found that all Bakawi's relatives had been wiped out years ago in an American missile strike during his daughter's wedding.
In London, after being woken up, William instructed Sunday to post the bounty and then returned to bed, trusting Sunday to handle the cleanup. By morning, all remaining insurgents and mercenaries who had managed to escape were systematically hunted down by the Black Ghost using knives and throwing stars.
This efficient operation left certain high-ranking British officials deeply unsettled when they received reports later that morning. However, those at the very top hardly seemed concerned. In their view, with William's immense wealth and tumultuous upbringing, it was only natural for him to have a few skilled operatives at his disposal.
This was also why William had chosen to deploy the Black Ghost instead of his more effective spider robots. The human touch made it more palatable.
The next day, William slept in until ten. After breakfast, he turned on the TV, only to find every channel flooded with news about him. Changing channels didn't help; dozens of paparazzi had gathered outside his estate. Left with no choice, William decided to stay home, not that he minded.
Rather than being angry, William was surprisingly pleased by the media's focus on him. Possibly due to directives from higher-ups to prevent public panic, today's news primarily centered around him, with the attacks glossed over.
While London remained without power, other Britons, tense from the previous night's events, tuned into TV or picked up newspapers for updates on the attack, only to be greeted with what felt like a movie about William.
William's heroic actions at Buckingham Palace took center stage. The media recounted how he singlehandedly defeated eight assassins and saved both the king and the German Chancellor. In a clever diversion, the coverage also highlighted his bulletproof coat, including detailed data that made it clear this information came directly from Philip's office.
For William, this was excellent news and exactly the outcome he had hoped for when he saved the German Chancellor.
Thanks to the broadcast, the coat immediately became a sensation worldwide, with wealthy individuals everywhere asking how to acquire it. Orders surged, and demand for bulletproof apparel reached new heights.
