Beneath the Canopy of Eternity

Chapter 5: Jade

The next morning, the jade forest awoke under a soft, golden light. Sunbeams pierced through the leaves, illuminating the mana particles dancing in the air. Bunta and the bird woke up with renewed energy, ready to continue their quest.

Bunta stretched his legs and yawned loudly. "Come on, little nameless one, we've got work to do today. No time to waste!"

The bird, still a bit groggy, shook its feathers. "Do you have a plan, Bunta?"

"Of course I have a plan! Well, kind of. We'll follow the mana particles. They'll lead us to something important. And if we stumble upon treasure along the way, even better."

They dismantled their makeshift tent and prepared to leave. Bunta took the lead, hopping from rock to rock with surprising agility, while the bird followed, a bit slower but determined.

The deeper they went, the denser and more mysterious the forest became. The trees seemed taller, their trunks smooth and gleaming like polished jade. The leaves, broad and lush, formed a canopy so thick that barely any sunlight filtered through.

"It feels like the forest is changing," murmured the bird, observing its surroundings with a mix of fascination and apprehension.

"Yeah, that's normal," replied Bunta, not slowing down. "The deeper we go, the stronger the magic. Gotta be careful, you know. The jade forest has its secrets. And its dangers."

The bird nodded, sensing a tension in the air. The mana particles danced more intensely, as if warning them of something.

Suddenly, Bunta stopped dead in his tracks. "Wait. Do you hear that?"

The bird perked up its ears. A strange rustling sound could be heard, as if something was moving through the bushes.

"Maybe it's nothing," muttered Bunta, though his tone was less confident than usual.

They moved forward cautiously, their senses on high alert. The rustling grew closer, and suddenly, a creature emerged from the ferns.

It was a fox, but not an ordinary one. Its fur was a deep black, streaked with bluish reflections that seemed to absorb the light. Its eyes, a piercing violet, fixed them with an unsettling intelligence.

"A shadow fox," whispered Bunta, taking a step back. "Be careful, little one. These critters aren't very friendly."

The fox observed them for a moment, then, without a sound, vanished into the bushes.

The bird took a deep breath. "That was… scary."

"Yeah, but we made it out. Come on, let's keep moving. We can't stay here too long."

After a few more hours of walking, they arrived in a clearing that seemed out of time. At its center stood a gigantic tree, its trunk so wide it would have taken a dozen people to encircle it. Its branches stretched toward the sky, and its leaves glowed with a golden light.

"That's the World Tree," murmured Bunta, awestruck. "They say it's the heart of the jade forest."

The bird gazed at the tree in admiration. "It's beautiful. But… why is it called the Forbidden Clearing?"

"Because no one knows what happens here. Legends say those who get too close disappear. Or worse."

The bird shivered. "So, what do we do?"

Bunta thought for a moment. "We'll be careful. But we'll explore. Because if there's treasure anywhere, it's here."

They approached the tree cautiously. The mana particles swirled around them, as if encouraging them to move forward.

Suddenly, a voice echoed through the clearing, soft but powerful.

"Who dares enter the Forbidden Clearing?"

Bunta and the bird froze, searching for the source of the voice.

"Is… is the tree talking?" asked the bird, incredulous.

"No," replied Bunta, his eyes wide. "It's worse."

A figure emerged from the shadow of the tree. It was a woman of breathtaking beauty, her golden hair seemingly woven from light and her eyes a radiant gold. Her skin was pale, almost translucent, and she wore a flowing robe that seemed made of mist and leaves.

"I am the Guardian of the World Tree," she said, her voice resonating like an echo. "Why have you come here?"

Bunta, for once, seemed at a loss for words. "Uh… we're looking for treasure. Well, not just treasure. We're looking for… something important."

The Guardian studied them for a long moment, then smiled faintly. "You are brave, I grant you that. But the jade forest reveals its secrets only to those who prove themselves worthy. Are you ready to face the trial?"

The bird and Bunta exchanged a glance, then nodded.

"Yes," said the bird, with a determination it didn't know it possessed. "We're ready."

The Guardian extended a hand, and a golden light enveloped the clearing.

"Then let your trial begin."

Suddenly, a luminous seal formed beneath Bunta and the bird's feet. Complex runes etched in light swirled around them, emitting a palpable energy.

The Guardian spoke ancient words, her voice resonating like a sacred chant.

"Bunta, heir of eternal flames, bearer of the dragon's ember."

Bunta looked surprised, but a proud smile spread across his face. "Heir of flames, huh? I like that."

Then the Guardian turned to the bird, her golden eyes scrutinizing it with an intense gaze.

"And you… the Jade Star."

The bird felt a shiver run through its feathers. "The Jade Star?"

Before it could say more, the light of the seal intensified, and in an instant, Bunta and the bird vanished from the clearing.

When the light faded, the bird found itself alone. Around it stretched a strange, dreamlike landscape, where the sky was a deep violet and the ground was covered in glowing crystals.

"Bunta?" it called, but its voice was lost in the vastness of the place.

It looked around, searching for any trace of its friend, but there was nothing. Just silence and the light of the crystals.

"Where are you, Bunta?" it murmured, feeling a pang of worry.

Meanwhile, Bunta awoke in a completely different place. He was surrounded by dancing flames, as if the fire itself had welcomed him.

"Hey, little nameless one!" he shouted, but there was no response.

He stood up, looking around. "Well, looks like we've been separated. No problem, I'll find you."

The bird took a deep breath, feeling a growing determination within. "I'll find you, Bunta. And we'll finish this quest together."

It began to walk, following the glowing crystals that seemed to guide it. Somewhere deep inside, it knew this trial was only the beginning.

And their adventure was just getting started.
