Chapter 1361: The last battle (24)
Her attacks continued unabated, despite the change in location and the multiple targets around.
Her feral mind listed only Erik as a target, ignoring the battle raging beneath them. It must have been because before turning feral, Vania regarded Erik as the "must kill target," the supreme threat, and maybe this thought was still there in her beastly mind. Regardless, this single-minded focus played into Erik's strategy perfectly, since that meant she wasn't bothering the Dark Shapes.
Of course, Erik took advantage of that, and with each attack she made, he made it so it would end up on the thaids and blackguards below.
Things were dying, but not the clones. The system's notifications began appearing with increasing frequency as Erik took advantage of Vania.

The mana absorption process worked as it should have. Each death below—whether thaid or blackguard—released energy that Erik's biological supercomputer caught. Though Erik had to stay close enough to them to absorb the mana they released, which in itself wasn't simple since the thaids and the blackguards attacked him when he got close enough.
The undead gave no mana upon destruction, but they caused plenty of deaths among the living.
Vania slashed at Erik, forcing him to make another barrier. The spectral chains followed, weaving patterns meant to trap him.
Erik dodged between them, allowing several to pass close enough that he felt their energy disturb the surrounding air.

Erik felt the surge of mana with each level gained. New attribute points became available, waiting to be used. He placed them into dexterity, feeling his perception and reaction time sharpen with each new point.
<How many do I have now?>
[777,] the system said.
Below, the battlefield continued its descent into chaos. Undead thaid fought living thaid, while Blackguards tried to keep formation against threats from all sides.
Bodies piled higher as the death toll mounted, each dead fighter adding to Erik's army, at least up to the limit of undead the clones could take. Though, with more than 5000 Chimaeric Demons, that meant more than 15000 undead on the battlefield.
Each time they got destroyed, new ones would arise. Erik's army, at that point, was truly invincible, and even if the newcomer thaids destroyed them with the strength of numbers, they were still able to kill them.
One particularly massive thaid tore through five blackguards before being killed by three undead puppets. Its death released a substantial mana burst that Erik's system eagerly absorbed.

Erik sensed his friends nearing the extraction point. Amber's corrosive fog had thinned as she prepared for the teleportation that would bring her out of that mess with Mira and Emily.
The Dark Shapes had mostly pulled out, leaving only the undead and a small contingent of Chimaeric Demons to cover the last phase of the retreat.
Vania roared in frustration; her attacks grew frenzied. Erik took advantage of this growing recklessness, using minimal movements to avoid her strikes while staying within the mana absorption radius of the battlefield.
Though the tactic of increasing his dexterity was working because Erik started getting used to the woman's speed and got able to keep track of her more and more easily. Although she was still too fast for him to be able to follow her as he should.

Each level narrowed the gap between them. His increased dexterity let him track and dodge her attacks with growing precision, making what was once impossible just difficult.
The Blackguards got killed, but so did the thaids and the clones who remained behind.
Their discipline, which was impressive at the beginning of the battle, deteriorated as their numbers decreased.
Some of the blackguards broke their formation, some tried to flee, while others formed defensive clusters with those that didn't succumb to panic or death.
The blackguards were significantly stronger than before, with most of them having at least four powers. But the beasts on Mur were ancient and much stronger than them.
Erik checked his status. His dexterity had climbed again, approaching a threshold where he might effectively keep up with Vania's speed.
<It's working,> Erik said to the biological supercomputer.
[It is, but the battlefield dynamics are changing,] the system said. [The blackguards have realized they've been abandoned. The Vindicators are dead, and Vania is now crazy. They're trying to disengage from the fighting zone.]
<We can't allow them to leave.>
Through the Hive Mind and Instability, Erik gave his clones new orders.
<Keep the blackguards from leaving.>
The undead replied to their masters' will, changing course to cut off retreat paths. They formed a perimeter, driving the blackguards back toward the center of the battlefield where the largest concentration of thaids waited.
Caught between the undead and monsters, the blackguards found themselves in an impossible situation.
Vania, still focused entirely on Erik, failed to see the annihilation of her forces. Her attacks continued with undiminished ferocity, but Erik found them increasingly easier to track.
At that point, Erik also started attacking on his own, killing thaids and blackguards alike.

The last clusters of Blackguards fell, their last moments marked by desperate uses of brain crystal powers that proved lacking against the staggering amount of enemies.
With their death, only two major forces remained on the battlefield: Vania and the thaids. They were going to be a tough nut to crack, but Erik could do it.
The surviving Chimaeric Demons abandoned their positions, using the undead to kill the thaids.
[Your dexterity has increased a lot,] the system said. [You have 1032 dexterity points. How do you feel? This amount should be enough to keep up with Vania.]
<I can see it…>
