Chapter 1363: The last battle (26)

Erik watched Vania's blurred shape dart toward him. Her speed remained terrifying, even with his enhanced dexterity.

She moved like a demon—all teeth, claws, and rage—her body twisted by mutations that sacrificed humanity for raw power. No… She turned into a demon. It wasn't just because of the demonic appearance she got, but even her way of fighting, the way in which, despite the feral mind, she was still able to create chilling tactics to take Erik by surprise.

She had to die. Something like this could not roam the world unopposed.

"Now or never." Erik steeled himself. One wrong move and he would die.

[Don't miss it!]

Erik didn't answer. His muscles tensed, his mind sharpened, and his heart drummed as Vania closed the last meters separating them. Instead of erecting a barrier or dodging, Erik left himself open—a willing target.

Vania was too feral now to understand it was a trap and must have thought something very primal about her plan, having worked, unable to see that she was doing what Erik wanted.

However, what Erik did was to create a tunnel, using his barriers, to keep the other thaids away. There were still many, and judging by how many there were, Amber and the others left. The number of thaids was simply overwhelming now, even for him, if he fought on the ground, of course.

Vania seemed to have decided to go all out and not save her mana reserves. She was currently wielding a gigantic mana hammer. There was so much mana in it that Erik felt the surrounding area distort.

He and Vania were as powerful as the Leviathan Serpent. It was weird to see how much destruction could be brought outside the sea. Though the sea waves that the Leviathan Serpent and its gigantic foe generated were world-destroying and scared even him.

Vania struck. Erik barely powered Absolute Castle and a barrier up in time to prevent fatal damage.

<I need to make her think I'm done for.>

Vania didn't realize Erik had created a barrier all around them, nor could she understand his armor protected him from the devastating blow, and that was also because, as soon as he got hit, he jumped backward to mitigate the force behind the punch. However, he still got injured. Vania's strength was too much even for him, with all his mana and Essence Flow. There were limits to his current powers and to what he could do.

<Got... you...>

Vania was already chasing the flying human, but Erik activated Verdant Architect, pouring mana into the many seeds he scattered during the battle.

Plants erupted all around. The damage to the forest Erik and Vania made was mended in an instant, but all those plants were now under Erik's control, and Vania was exactly where he wanted her, unaware of what Erik did.

The plants became tendrils. The material making up the plants turned into metal, and thanks to the mana Erik could pump into them, they turned into Aclaitrium.

Erik didn't know if he could do that, but somehow he managed after taking the risk. Making Aclaitrium was not different from making a random metal; he just needed to pump mana into it. Certain amounts would give different results, so Erik was sure he could also make Drastone if he poured enough mana into it and got enough time.

However, the good thing about him being able to make a mana-conductive ore was that mana flowed much better into the material, making it faster for him to use it and amplifying the effects of his powers.

The vines turned stronger thanks to that, their vise on the beastly human increasing. Telekinesis added on to that, constraining her in a crushing grip.

While stuck, the vines quickly seeped inside her body. They went through the blood armor, then the bone one, and last, through her flesh.

Vania's eyes bulged as tendrils burst through veins and arteries, splitting skin and erupting from her flesh.

She screamed—a haunting, inhuman sound that scared the Thaids below, who still refused to back away from the fight, anticipating the fate that was befalling the human monstrosity—as the vines ravaged her body.

She tried to use her brain crystal power to manipulate her blood and fight the foreign substance, but she didn't have as much mana as Erik did, and even if she had it, Erik could regenerate it as much as he wanted.

Seeing it wasn't working, she tried to tear Erik to shreds. However, at that point, he was using all his mana for three things.

The first was to use the tendrils to trap and kill Vania, the second was to make her immobile thanks to telekinesis, and the third was to keep his barriers up.

That meant there was no way for Vania to get out of the trap, and even if she did, the thaids were circling them.

There was not a single spot around them where a thaid wasn't present. Soon the sun got swallowed by the shadows made by the frenzied monsters flying toward the area.

But they could not go through the barriers; they could not shatter them because Erik had more than two thousand energy points, and Essence Flow made him regenerate the mana those points provided in a matter of seconds. Even if they cracked a barrier, Erik would simply fill it up again, mending the cracks and keeping them safe for the time being.

However, the situation was becoming increasingly dangerous as more thaids joined the circling horde. Erik knew that eventually he would have to get out of the barriers and kill those beasts.

Barbs sprouted from the plants, tearing through muscle tissue and nerve endings. Vania convulsed as the vines reached her brain.

[Her condition is deteriorating rapidly,] the system said. [Her heart damage is at 64%. Blood loss is critical.]

<Take this, you bitch!>

Erik used Elemental Lord to give the finishing touch. Electricity built around them, the air becoming heavy with ozone. The energy danced between his fingers and then poured through the Aclaitrium tendrils. A massive multiplying effect came.

The lightning followed the path of the vines, supercharging them because of the Aclaitrium they were made of. Her body jerked as electricity coursed through every cell.

The vines carried the current to her vital organs, bypassing any kind of defense that might have protected her. Her heart received the full brunt of the attack; muscle fibers contracted before failing altogether.

Vania's body went rigid, her mouth open in a silent scream. Smoke rose from her skin.

With a final, intense spasm, Vania collapsed.

[3...2...1...0]

[Mana successfully absorbed into experience. 2,180,586,665.31 experience points awarded to the host.]

Vania gave him a fuckton of experience, much more than he got from a single monster. But it was nothing compared to the thousands of Thaids he killed during the battle.

What was better was that there were many more around, and more were coming, attracted by the scent of death and the massive amounts of mana around.

Erik was going to get a lot of experience points, but he had to rest a little. He fell on his butt on the ground, not because he was physically tired, but mentally. Even with the ten hydra's heads he had, he could not avoid the mental backlash.

Around him, thousands of thaids tried to reach him behind the barrier, sensing weakness but hesitant to approach. They recognized the power that had felled Vania, understanding on some instinctual level that Erik was dangerous.

Yet the urge to kill was there. All the mana the two possessed made it so they didn't see each other. They just wanted to kill them and acted as if the other thaids weren't even there.

[The plan worked despite its danger,] the system said.

Through the Hive Mind, the Dark Shapes contacted him.

<Are you all right, master?>

<I'm alive,> Erik said. <Vania is dead. The Blackguards have been destroyed. We did it. Have the others reached safety?>

<Yes, Master.>

Erik stood, blood covered his torso, soaking what remained of his clothing. The injury was catastrophic—a hole torn directly through his chest—yet he survived. Few others would have walked away from such an injury.

<Tell them I'm coming,> Erik said, and then turned to look around. There was a lot he still had to do, and now he had all the time he needed.

Erik took to the air and channeled mana, healing his wound and soaring through the sky. Then a massive amount of mana spread outward from his body. Erik controlled the Aclaitrium plants, making electricity course through them.

The plants then impaled the thaids around the barrier.

The Aclaitrium tendrils burst from the ground in waves, each surge triggering a chorus of inhuman cries.

Like metallic serpents, they wove through the mass of thaids, piercing scales and armor with cutting accuracy.

The creatures' bodies jerked and convulsed as electricity coursed through the conductive metal, their death throes illuminating the darkened sky with flashes of blue-white light.

Blood poured from above as hundreds, then thousands of thaids hung impaled on the forest of metallic spikes.
