Chapter 37: Chapter 37
"The tenth. . . Espada. " Tōshirō, the leader of the 10th division, had recently learned this name from intel provided by the 12th division.
A Menos Grande had shed its mask, evolving into a new state. With its hollow mask shattered to unveil a human visage, it wielded a sword akin to a Zanpakutō, which contained its Arrancar abilities, accompanied by an unbreakable exterior known as "steel skin. "
The top ten Arrancars would be chosen from among the finest, with the strongest ten designated as "Espada. "
For instance, Fiander Moros, asserting his position as No.10, meant that he was considered on par with or possibly superior to Tōshirō, with nine others even stronger than him.
Abarai, who witnessed Fiander severely wound Komamura Sajin in a single blow at Sōkyoku Hill, was deeply intimidated by Fiander's prowess. As the world-through gate vanished behind him, he addressed the nearby vice-captains without delay:
"Stay alert, this opponent is incredibly strong! " Madaramei Ikaku, Ayasegawa Yumichika, Abarai Renji, Rukia Kuchiki, and Matsumoto Rangiku, a select few vice-captains dispatched by the Soul Society, were led by Hitsugaya Tōshirō, the captain of the 10th division.
"Ah, his Zanpakutō can alter the weather. It seems to have an ice connection, which resembles Captain Hitsugaya's ability. Proceed with caution. " Though briefly captured by Aizen, Rukia had observed his powers.
"Are all Arrancars like you? " Tōshirō inquired, scrutinizing Fiander, who appeared distinctly human. He refrained from an immediate attack, opting instead to gather information first.
"Arrancar? Hmm, rather than label me as such, I consider myself more akin to a Shinigami! " Fiander responded, grinning.
"What. . . ? " Tōshirō found himself taken aback by Fiander's declaration. After a moment, he drew his Zanpakutō, asserting, "I may not know your intentions, but aligning with Aizen suggests I must treat you as an adversary, correct? "
"Indeed, you can feel free to attack. As a friendly reminder, I advise you to exert your full strength from the outset, or you may find yourself dead. " Fiander suddenly flashed a wide smile, his lips curling as he laughed heartily. "Let's go, Shinigami! "
"Sit on the frosty sky! Hyōrinmaru! " Tōshirō initiated the confrontation, unleashing a blue Reiatsu that manifested into an ice dragon aimed at Fiander.
"What, is this the extent of your Reiatsu? I recall there being some sort of limiter on you, right? Just hurry up and remove it."
"When I defeat you, I want no complaints about not having given your all."
Tōshirō disregarded Fiander's taunts, directing the ice dragon forward and utilizing flash step to close the distance, exclaiming, "Do not underestimate the Soul Society; we don't require it! "
The ice dragon struck Fiander's body directly, completely freezing him, while Tōshirō, who was limited in his abilities, was already breathing heavily from fatigue after merely activating Shikai.
Immediately, Rangiku and the others approached Tōshirō, inquiring, "Did you succeed, Captain? "
"I'm uncertain; he gave off a strange aura, and I did not sense any Reiatsu from him. Everyone, be cautious," replied Tōshirō, as he and his comrades readied their Zanpakuto towards the frozen Fiander. They found it hard to believe that an Arrancar, designated as an enemy by the Soul Society, could be so weak, particularly a member of the Espada notorious for their strength among Arrancars.
Crack!
Moments later, the ice encasing Fiander shattered into powder, scattering into the air. He regarded Tōshirō and the others with contempt.
"Seems I've been underestimated," Fiander remarked as he extended his arms, expressing mock helplessness. "But that's typical; I tend to appear harmless to both humans and animals. I offered you a chance, and now. . . "
As he concluded his statement, Tōshirō felt a sudden awareness and swiftly swung his Zanpakuto, activating Bankai:
"BANKAI! DAIGUREN HYŌRINMARU! Matsumoto, immediately request the release of the limiter seal from Soul Society! "
"Understood, Captain! " Just as Rangiku finished her response, the entire world seemed to halt, enveloped in silence. Suddenly, the whole of Karakura Town trembled violently as Fiander unleashed his Reiatsu instantaneously.
Tōshirō and the others witnessed the space distorting, trembling uncontrollably as though plunged into a frigid lake.
"This is. . . such terrifying Reiatsu! "
"Is this an. . . Espada? " On the opposite side, Kisuke Urahara, who had just dealt with Yammy, sensed the Reiatsu reverberating through Karakura Town and was taken aback. He instructed Yoruichi to treat the injuries of Kurosaki Ichigo and the others before hastily moving toward Fiander and his group.
"Have you decided who will perish first? " Before Tōshirō and the others could react to his inquiry, a blue beam of light suddenly pierced through Ayasegawa Yumichika's chest. Fiander's fingers emitted blue smoke as he intoned, "Hadō number four. "
"Are you serious? Hadō? ! "
"Yumichika! " Ikkaku dashed forward to assist Yumichika, who had been gravely injured by Fiander's attack.
"Can Arrancar even use Kidō? Isn't he a hollow? " Abarai Renji grimaced.
Fiander's recent action had delivered a significant shock to the Shinigami.
"The dragon disassembles! " Tōshirō, wielding his Zanpakutō, attacked Fiander, who caught the blade and, with his other hand, formed a red ball of light, declaring, "Hadō's Thirty-one Red Cannon! "
Boom! !
The close-proximity explosion engulfed Tōshirō. As the smoke cleared, he emerged from the blast, shielded by the wings of the ice dragon in his Bankai state.
"Captain, are you alright! " Witnessing Fiander seize Hyōrinmaru to initiate a counteroffensive, Rangiku ceased holding back. She ran her fingers along her blade and declared,
"Release Haineko! "
Once the release was complete, Rangiku's Zanpakutō transformed into a shapeless, mist-like entity, somewhat akin to Senbonzakura.
"Roar! Zabimaru! "
"Extend it! Hozukimaru! "
"Dance, Sode no Shirayuki! "
Everyone except Yumichika, who lay unconscious and gravely injured from Fiander's attack, unleashed their Zanpakutō.
They recognized that the Arrancar claiming to be an Espada before them was arguably the most formidable opponent they had ever encountered.
