Born to Be a Secretary

chapter 6

“Is work hard?”
“Yes?”

“You seem to have lost some weight.”
Hee-won was taken aback by the affectionate question and the unkind gaze.
He ran his hand down his jawline. He looked up at Kwon Young-je blankly. Why is this happening all of a sudden? Did he eat lunch badly?

“No, not really….”
Kwon Young-je tilted his head. The man who had been staring at the desk calendar densely filled with schedules spoke again.
“Secretary Kim, it’s almost contract renewal season, right?”

“Yes.”
“Are there any special conditions you want?”
Ah, I found the reason for Executive Director Kwon’s strange behavior. Although he’s a regular employee, an executive secretary is a special employee, so his contract must be renewed every two years.

He thought he was asking about her well-being out of the ordinary, but it was the contract renewal period that had come, and he was pretending to care about her. Only then did Hee-won feel relieved and let out a weak smile.
Through three rounds of negotiations, he had bought a house and a car. Kim Hee-won was already receiving the highest salary in his field and had also been given the title of director. The compensation for his hard work was sufficient. There was nothing more he needed.
“I’ll think about it.”

“I believe you will definitely renew your contract.”
It sounded like he was saying that he wouldn’t let him run away. Kwon Young-jae kept his eyes fixed on Hee-won’s face and continued talking.
“I know you’ve worked hard. The only thing I can give you is material things, so I hope Secretary Kim will take care of her own share.”

It was his habit to speak politely only when he felt like it.
Kwon Young-jae then fiddled with his wristwatch and lifted his butt off the edge of the desk.
“I’m going to leave work for today.”

Hee-won’s eyes lit up at the word “leave work.” It hasn’t even been six o’clock yet? This was more valuable and thrilling than any other compensation.
“Yes, Director. I’ll get ready right away.”
He quickly got up from his seat, as if his mind would change. He pressed the contact number of the driver saved on his phone. Of course, he never showed any signs of being in a hurry. It’s also a virtue of a secretary to hide his excitement.
“I’ll pick you up tomorrow at 8 AM.”

“Yes, thank you for your hard work.”
“Please go in.”
Hee-won greeted him more politely than usual.

As he straightened his deeply bowed back, he saw Kwon Young-je’s back as he went inside the front door without looking back. Hee-won stayed in his seat until he entered the house.
The sound of the iron gate closing filled him with a sense of liberation. The corners of his lips, out of control, curved. The driver who was seeing him off laughed along with Hee-won.
“Secretary Kim, should I take you home?”

“No. It’s okay. The driver worked hard today too. Please go in.”
It took about the same amount of time whether I drove or walked. It only took 5 minutes to walk from Executive Director Kwon’s house to Hee-won’s house.
As expected from an expensive neighborhood, the streets were quiet and the surrounding area was full of high walls.

My steps on the smoothly paved asphalt road felt like they were flying. The early departure from work after a long time made people excited like children.
If I leave the housing complex and go up a little further, I can see a luxurious villa complex with a stylish exterior. The villa, which is considered one of the most expensive in Seoul, is where Kim Hee-won lives.
As soon as I entered the house, I took off my uncomfortable suit and took a quick shower. Meanwhile, the delivery food I had ordered in advance arrived just in time. Hee-won set the dinner table on the living room table and sat down comfortably on the floor.

Even though I was sitting cross-legged, my knees were shaking with excitement. I couldn’t believe how happy I was to have this rare moment of leisure. I opened a fat can of cider in front of a properly prepared dinner. Tsk-tsk! The cheerful sound is already refreshing.
It’s a bit unfortunate that I can’t drink alcohol, but still, this is something.
Hee-won took a big sip of cider and immediately picked up his chopsticks. He stuffed a lot of the steamed chicken and noodles with the salty soy sauce seasoning into his mouth. Hee-won’s cheeks were full and his eyes were wide. Is happiness something special? This is it.

The house was desolate. He lived alone and the floor space was large. He pressed the remote control to relieve the silence. He chose a variety show among the many channels and made it his dinner companion.
“Today’s guest, we’ll have Han Jin-seo!”
“Oh, my neighbor.”

Hee-won pretended to know the actor who filled the screen.
He was one of the top stars living in the same villa. He had passed by him a few times as he came and went, but he definitely looked taller and more radiant on camera than in real life.
The caption “Dominant Alpha” was written large next to the actor’s face. The man standing next to him was also an Alpha, and he was busy envying Dominant Alphas, saying that they were different.

It’s funny. There is a hierarchy even among Alphas. To Beta, they all seem like a species living in a different world.
The guest introductions continued. It seemed like a special feature on Hyung-in, but all the people who appeared were Alphas and Omegas. It was the omega actor’s turn. He was incredibly pretty. Even though he was a male omega, his appearance itself was different from that of ordinary men.
Hee-won stared at the screen absentmindedly, filling his stomach. Everyone was busy admiring Hyung-in’s appearance, and the captions were almost like a joke.

The number of Hyung-in actors has been increasing in the entertainment industry these days. Omegas have been around for a long time, but recently, we have been seeing a lot of Dominant Alphas. Since they are often exposed to the media, it’s natural that everyone wants to be Hyung-in. The times when they were looked down on as being closer to animals than humans have become a thing of the past. These days, only their external charm is emphasized.
That is why hormone stimulants that increase the possibility of expression are gaining popularity. The recent boom in sales of a drug developed by Apex is also evidence of this desire.
“Ah, stimulants!”

While watching TV, Hee-won suddenly remembered something he had put off. Hee-won put down his chopsticks and picked up his cell phone that he had thrown on the sofa.
Just because he works at a pharmaceutical company doesn’t mean he can easily obtain medicine that is in short supply. It would be easy if he asked Executive Director Kwon, but that was really a last resort, and he had to go out and do it himself.
“Um…who is there?”

Hee-won looked through his phone contacts. There were a lot of names saved on his phone. His various connections were one of the byproducts of working as a personal secretary for six years.
He was looking through the sales contacts when his phone screen changed and a loud bell rang.
“Ouch!”

The moment Director Kwon’s name appeared on the LCD, I was so shocked that I dropped my phone. I quickly grabbed the phone that almost fell into the steamed chicken container. Even then, the phone was still whining. I couldn’t even calm down before I answered the phone.
“Yes, Director.”
- Secretary Kim, come home.

“Oh, yes. I understand.”
The call ended in less than 30 seconds. As soon as I put the phone down, I could hear the sound of laughter and a mocking voice saying, “I knew it!” from the TV screen that was on.
“…Why again? What’s going on?”

Hee-won hung her head on the sofa. How long has it been since she got off work? She grumbled and eventually lifted her heavy buttocks off the floor.
What can a servant do? The master is calling her, so she has to go.
She was humming along the path she had come from earlier, but now she was walking ❖ Nоvеl𝚒ght ❖ (Exclusive on Nоvеl𝚒ght) with a languid gait. I even felt like I was going to work after getting dressed up again.

Arriving in front of Director Kwon’s house, I pressed the password. I stepped through the creaking front door and headed through the small garden to the front door.
Instead of ringing the doorbell, Hee-won put his thumb on the door lock. Since he came and went so often, Hee-won’s fingerprint was registered in this house.
I couldn’t feel any human presence inside the house. Director Kwon had called people over but couldn’t see where they were.

I walked around the large house. As expected of his neat personality, Director Kwon’s house was so clean that there wasn’t a single speck of dust. Every time I came here, I felt like there was no humanity. It felt more like an exhibition hall or a gallery than a house where people lived.
“Director, I’m here.”
Only my voice resonated in the living room with its high ceilings. Hee-won looked around and walked toward the study. After knocking politely and opening the door, I was finally able to find the person I was looking for.

I could see Executive Director Kwon behind the desk. He was lying on the chair with his forehead held, perhaps because he was not feeling well.
I hurriedly walked. I quickly approached Executive Director Kwon and checked his condition.
“Are you okay?”

I touched Executive Director Kwon’s forehead without permission. His skin was warm. His breathing seemed faster than usual.
“Executive Director, please look at me.”
Only then did the other person open his eyes.

Executive Director Kwon’s pupils were wide open.
It was a symptom of a rut.
