Chapter 7: The Hidden Genius
Mrs. Alison was taken aback by his words. She froze in place, not knowing how to respond to this. After a while, Mr. Maxwell resumed.
"I believe you know about Derek, the new student in your class." He paused, looking straight into Alison's eyes.
Miss Alison was already picking up on the message he was trying to pass across.
"Do you actually want Derek to be our participant? Remember, each school is only allowed one participant," Miss Alison said, the redness in her cheeks becoming even more obvious.
Mr. Maxwell couldn't help but reveal a smile on his face as he stood up from his seat, walking to the mini shelf on the right side of the office.
Although the room wasn't that big, it still had just enough space to accommodate a mini shelf filled with stacks of paper.
While going through a section of the shelf, Maxwell spoke.
"Why do you think Derek is here in the first place? Doesn't it bother you that he didn't write an entrance exam, which you're very much aware of?" he said, still struggling through his pile of papers as if looking for something.
There was silence again except for the ruffling of papers that filled the room.
Mrs. Alison kept pondering what he had just said. It was starting to make more sense to her now.
At first, she thought Derek was just a favored child. She thought he wasn't good enough for the school, and that the principal had decided to give him a helping hand.
After all, the school had high standards. But after the first few weeks, she discovered that Derek was doing extremely well in all his subjects.
First, it was his English, but she shrugged it off as him just being good with English in particular. But as his homeroom teacher, she decided to go through his other records and was shocked to see he was still doing extremely well.
Till this day, Miss Alison hadn't really thought much about it, but after hearing Mr. Maxwell's last words in class, she was confused. She just knew something else was going on.
---
Back in class, Derek had become the center of attention since the principal incident. All eyes had been on him.
Although Miss Alison's period was skipped, the day later rounded off with biology.
Instead of hurrying out of class with the rest of the students, Derek sat still, going through the day's activities. He also knew he needed to be at John's house today.
Derek's heart was still really broken by the words of the principal, but he was quite good at hiding his feelings.
He just glanced across the door as his classmates quietly walked away, some looking at him with pity, some with disappointment, and others with mockery.
Even John couldn't dare look Derek in the face. He just dropped a piece of paper on his desk and walked away.
Derek quietly picked up the paper, the gravity of the principal's words still weighing on him.
He could still hear the exact sentence replaying in his head.
Derek picked up the paper and began to read what it said.
---
Mr. Maxwell finally set his eyes on the documents he had been looking for, and with a soothing grin, he walked back to his chair.
Miss Alison watched him closely as he walked back to his seat, curiosity all over her eyes.
Mr. Maxwell sat down, cleared his throat, and began to talk again.
"Well, here is a signed document with regard to Derek."
Mr. Maxwell, still holding the documents, gave her a piercing look.
Miss Alison couldn't help but look away slightly, as Mr. Maxwell's gaze was beginning to make her feel uncomfortable.
"Well, I don't know if what we signed here is legally approved or if it's lawful, so I would like this information to stay between us. Am I clear?"
Miss Alison nodded slightly in agreement.
With that, Mr. Maxwell flung the files across the table so Miss Alison could take a look.
"He was schooling at Kings Ground Private School before his transfer. He was nothing short of a genius, but he still got last in the class." Maxwell stopped as Alison raised her head to focus on what he was saying.
"But why?" Alison asked as she dropped the paper down fully on the desk to concentrate on the discussion.
"His dad is actually a multimillionaire, the owner of Sky High Technology." Maxwell paused, expecting to see shock on her face, but instead, he saw confusion.
"What? That's not enough reason to make the boy go through hell," Alison said, clenching her fists below the table.
Maxwell couldn't help but smirk.
"Well, women will always be women. Look, I can see through his mind. He made the school treat the boy like he was a dummy, but he wasn't." Maxwell pursed his lips and looked at Alison with a smirk as if about to say something important.
"Steve is not just an entrepreneur—he's one with something upstairs. He's trying to make Sky Technology better than before. But how does he do that? By making his son a brute genius," Maxwell said, winking.
Still, Alison wasn't buying the whole thing. A very disgusted look could be seen on her face as she started thinking about businessmen in general.
Maxwell noticed the change in her demeanor and frowned slightly.
"Well, to cut the long story short, during my outreach, I discovered this boy's potential. I called his dad to discuss his transfer. I promised to keep his goal only if, at my end, he participates in competitions for the school.
But that's the problem: the father believes that if he's allowed to go for competitions, he will discover he's a genius."
Mr. Maxwell looked at Miss Alison, who was still in disbelief.
"But trust me, I've got that under control. All I need you to do now is prepare him rigorously for the competition.
You have the details with you," Maxwell said, handing her back the flyer as she stood up to leave.
"Wait, most importantly,"
